Which normally means cancelled in gaming circles. Maybe if the recently announced Buffy MMO takes off, it'll be resurrected but for now, we'll just have to make our own entertainment.

Interesting quote from that article:

"The Firefly franchise story was wrapped up in the Serenity feature length film but fans still clamor for more."

That's a shame about the mmo - I'm not a huge gamer but I would have bought a copy or 3.

Also, if they can take a game (Resident Evil) and make it into a movie series, then taking a movie... that gets made into a game... and then making that game into a second coming of the tv series that the movie was based on... ... could happen too.

Well, I guess the fact that something is being said as to the status of the game is pretty good. I was hoping for a Beta sometime soon, but I guess us 'Coats will just do what we do best; wait and hope.

It's actually called an MMORPG (Mega Multi-player Online Role Playing Game). It's very much like Final Fantasy XI or World of Warcraft where you create your own character with your own home and possessions and money and you interact with other people in the online world. You go on missions, help each other out or just chat with people. This one is just set in the Firefly 'Verse. I like that it makes it possible to interact with other Browncoats in a whole new way.

This definitely means cancelled. If it comes back at a later point, it'll be more like Serenity being a continuation of Firefly. A Firefly MMO might still happen, but it won't be *this* MMO, if that makes sense. And don't expect to hear anything until 2011 at the earliest.

I suppose cancelled is better than those clowns making a shitty Firefly MMO. OTOH, now they're going to shit all over Buffy, so enjoy that, Scoobies. The potential is there for a high quality, professionally made Buffy MMO, but instead this is what Fox gives you. Really says something don't it?

Also, I would give it a less than 5% chance that these guys have even met with Joss, on either Firefly or Buffy, much less have him involved with the creative process.

I've had a feeling for a long time that Fox and these amatuers they hired were jerking us all around. Sigh. I hate being right about these things.

Yep, less than 5%. I hate being right.

I'm not a programmer, but I am involved in the game industry, and I follow most of these things pretty closely. If it weren't for the stubborn Browncoat in me, I'd tell you it meant canceled. The only hope we have is that someone still has the license, and maybe they'll pick it up again.

I'm posting over at Multiverse's forum (someone actually replied!!!). I'm trying to get permission to make a fan made MMO with the understanding that we'll take it down if they finish the official one. Apparently, MV isn't the ones to ask, but I'm trying to out of them who to talk to at FOX. Support would be super.

NOTE: I'm not trying to get the IP. I'm just trying to be tolerated i.e. not sued. Kind of like fan vids or fan made subtitles (Anime).

Now it's not an MMO, people - but if you've ever heard of the PC game Freelancer, there's a largish mod community with an open-world structured server available.

http://www.discoveryfl.com/

I play Discovery Freelancer 4.84 myself, and why ?

Because I fly the Inside Straight - a Firefly class transport that unlike Mal's boat, carries EIGHT level 3 transport cannons, backed up by heavy shields, and a right useful knowledge of off-lane routes.

Check it out, you might find it of interest.

The chances of not being sued by Fox are pretty damn slim. Browncoats have been sued for things as innocuous as t-shirts. If you’re using their IP without their permission (and their permission requires you paying them a whole lot of money upfront), Fox will sue you eventually, I think that much is pretty clear.

Also, there’s a rumor going around that the reason this was delayed/cancelled is because of a rights dispute between Fox and Universal. If that’s the case, I would imagine that their lawyers will be vehemently defending every inch of the IP they still own.

I agree with CaliforniaKaylee. There's no way Fox/Universal won't sue, they've been very active in that regard where this fandom is concerned.
However, Sigmanunki, if you can get some cooperation, more power to you!

This is a real shame, we heard about this at the Backup Bash and I remember my daughter signed up to beta it and was so excited.

*sigh*

Well, I guess I'll just have to wait for WotLK.

Yeah, They actually ripped fanvids off of youtube. I wouldn't push it. I imagine they should be all over protecting the rights being they are about to release the FF Blu Ray version.

Yah, the MV folks aren't budging. Didn't even get any contact info for anyone at FOX. Bloody poor decision. I really wonder how people ascend to such levels of power being so incompetent.

EDIT: FOX seems to really want to protect there contact information. Can't seem to find anything besides a general email address.

Heh, Sigma, the MV folks probably didn't give you a contact for the same reason that Fox doesn't post a contact publically. That's the way it is in most of the entertainment industry.

Yah, I think it's probably standard in more than just the entertainment industry. God forbid that people would actually be able to get hold of people.

At any rate, Agamemnon has an interesting notion on the MV forums:

se

"""
So you make a game called Tranquility Online Sigma. With a captain called Mac...a mercenary named June...A Monk named Darryl..a co pilot named Zog and a pilot name Hog...and a nice looking Lady named Sara who makes tea..an engineer named Daylee...a doctor named Stevon and his sister named Brook.

You put them in a ship called Tranquility and you build a world around a small number of strange planets that seem like outposts on backwater worlds. You trade pigs and you rob mag-lev trains between cities, but watch out for the Empire Agents who patrol the area and you set it in a somewhat western/Japanese futuristic era.

Now what will the game mechanics be like? Skill based system? Perma Death? Wow clones are everywhere so maybe levels?
"""

I'm trying to continue the discussion over there, because, well...
