So I have this Science Fiction and Fantasy class for English. We're just getting out of the science fiction portion of the class, most of which, is older stories from the forties and fifties. My professor is...kooky. Not necessarily in a bad way, just a little off the beaten path. It's been an interesting class, but nothing we've covered has been out of the ordinary, sci-fi wise.

Today was movie day, since we have an exam due this week. I was figuring it to be some obscure flick, that maybe might hold my interest. And what do we watch instead? Firefly.

I totally geeked out.

To make things even better, people actually enjoyed it. Most of the students in our class aren't exactly thrilled by the material generally (if they read it at all), but this really seemed to hold their interest. I know when you're part of a fandom, you have a tendency to think you're one of the only people in the world that enjoys that interest, but there were even people that had heard of the series. It was a hell of a surprise for me.

And not only do we get to watch it, we also get to discuss it afterward, and it will probably be on the next exam. I sincerely cannot believe I get to watch my favorite show, and on top of all this, it's for credit. Needless to say, this has truly made my day.

My teacher also asked if there was anything we wanted to add before we started watching, so (after my squealing quieted down) I was able to inform the class that if they needed any more information on the show, they could come here.

A very shiny beginning to my day. Just had to share.

My film class was the best back in 19????? (I've said too much).

But yeah, it was great and the prof looked very much like Dustin Hoffman...very strange. Anywho, sign me up for that class - discuss sci-fi and Firefly to boot - SHINY!

You go DeepGirl187

We're watching Serenity. We started on Tuesday, and we'll finish up tomorrow. I do wish we could watch Shindig or Out Of Gas though (or for that matter any of the other episodes ).

Good to hear that Firefly is making it into the curriculum. I know there are some colleges where Buffy is a part of the ethics classes - situational ethics are covered, from what I gather.

Shindig.. good episode...

Out of Gas... GREAT episode...

But I have to say that Serenity is probably one of my favorite, if not THE FAVORITE episode.

How can you NOT LOVE this scene? (Easily one of my favorite moments of any episode)

Mal: Comes time, someone's gonna have to deal with him. That sould be you. But I don't think you've got the guts... And I know you don't have the time.
Simon: What do you mean?
Mal: Kaylee's dead.
[Simon runs to the infirmary; sees Kaylee, quite alive; she waves at him]
Simon: [to himself] That man's psychotic.
[on bridge, Mal, Jayne, Zoë, and Wash are laughing histarically]
Wash: You are psychotic!
Mal: No! You shoulda seen his face. Oh, I'm a bad man.

Hi Wyterabit - you are like the 20th new person I've seen post in the last few days - welcome! Anyone else notice a rise in the new folk? And I loved that scene too - I think it was the first spark for me that this show was something special.

I find myself wondering how a class would deal with seeing for the first time "You live on a spaceship, Dear"

Thanks for the warm welcome Pizmo...

I'm a noob to the world of Firefly. I picked up the first release of the "Serenity" DVD a few months back and really enjoyed it. Just recently I picked up the 2 disc collector's edition and while watching the special features, decided to get the entire series. BEST DECISION I've made in a LONG TIME!

I fell in love with it immediately... The characters, story and even effects were wonderful! Can't understand why I didn't do it sooner, but I'm glad I finally did..

I've noticed the a rise in the popularity myself recently and really hope that Joss gets wind of it and reconsiders his decision to end it with Serenity.

(Sorry for straying from the original thread)

End it? Banish the thought! The 'verse continues, in comix form...

I don't hold out a LOT of hope for another feature or a revival of Firefly on TV, but a lot of hope isn't really what we need; we've always gotten by on less than a little.

It's how you've gotta be, out here on the raggedy edge.

Something to consider... (yes.. deep down, I am and always will be a Trekkie)

Star Trek aired in 1966. Ran 3 seasons. It took 10 years for the first movie to be released (TOS cancelled in 1969, the motion picture released in 1979). Considering all that Star Trek had to offer, it took the "mainstream" a DECADE to figure it out.

I fell in love with Firefly and Serenity the first time I saw it. I see the affection the fans have for the characters & 'verse. Time will prove (and there is NO DOUBT IN MY MIND WHATSOEVER) that this series was special. It may take awhile but I have no doubt that there will be more to come.

I've been encouraging everyone I know to take a ride on Serenity and received nothing but praise for recommending the series and BDM to my friends.

I look forward to the day that Joss is vindicated and Firefly becomes the next RIGHTFULLY recognized masterpiece that we already know it is!

Shiny!
