Does any know what these patches mean? What are the differences between them?

#1 is the 'Leonov' patch...It's patterned after a similar patch from 2010:Odyssey Two , which had a spacecraft named 'Leonov' , which was named for a real Russian cosmonaut , Alexei Leonov...

Leonov accomplished the first human 'spacewalk' ; and was later in command aboard the 2-seat Soyuz component of the Russian-American Apollo-Soyuz Test Project , which was touted as "Detente In Space" when it was linked-up in an Orbital Rendezvous mission in 1975...

#3 is similar to the real Russian 'RosAviaKosmos' Russian Aerospace bureau , and was also chosen for its unfamiliar ,
though still 'authentic' appearance...

The others are more obscure , and don't seem quite as familiar , so I don't have any particular information about them...

Perhaps they are unit insignia of the Independent Spaceborne...

okay

So why are these patches under the section Serenity on CreationNet? Why didn't Whedon just create his own patches with mandarin on them?

Everything's gotta be Somewhere...It's like a *rule* or something...These patches were on Wash's flight suit...

Smallish budget for a Big Damn Movie...

Why create something in Mandarin when the 'film' camera is never going to 'read' that , anyway ?

Giving that he didn't have a blockbuster budget , he stuck to the most important production design elements and
visually-important details that would be picked-up on big screen...

Close-ups are not required or integral in every scene...

In other words , he put the Coin where it did the most good...

He may have a better answer...This one's mine !

They did change them a little.
The one with the rocket looking take-off thingey.
The Russian wording was changed to "LYNDONO".
There were other changes as well.
The Propstore of London has close-up pics of Wash's patches.
