What are your top choices for Iconic space vehicles in Science Fiction, and why?

My top ten:

1. U.S.S. Enterprise
From Star Trek.
Constitution class refit, from the movies. No bloody A, B, C, or D! All other Trek ships pale in comparison. Best known fictional space ship in the world!

2. The Millenium Falcon
From Star Wars.
Almost as well known world wide as the Enterprise. A well worn, "used" ship, that led the way for more "lived in" ships like Serenity.

3. The Tardis
From Doctor Who.
Not just a time machine, but a spaceship too. Almost as well known as anything from Star Trek or Star Wars!

4. Battlestar Galactica
From Battlestar Galactica.
My pick, "The Bucket" from the new series. Tough, battle worn, and kinda homely looking, but you can't help loving the tough old gal!

5. Serenity
From Firefly and Serenity.
Less well known world wide, but the ship I'd most want to live in, if given the choice. Enterprise comes in at a very close second!

6. Eagle Transport
From Space 1999.
One of the most realistic ship designs ever. Looks like something NASA should have built by now.

7. Heart of Gold
From Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Like the Tardis, British idea's of space ships tend to be bizarre, but how can you not like a ship with a "Infinite Improbability Drive"?

8. U.S.S.C. Discovery One
From 2001: A Space Odyssey.
A less than graceful, but totally practical deep space design. Like Joss' Firefly, realistic 'no sounds in space"!

9. Nostromo
From Alien.
The Ultimate function over form, lived in, lowest bidder, deep space vessel!

10. Executor Star Destroyer
From Star Wars.
The opening shot in the first film is one of the most iconic movie moments ever!

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

I've got only eight right now that I positively believe are icons, but more might come....

1. U.S.S. Enterprise(Star Trek)
It's a classic.....a true icon. Once you see it, you just don't forget what it looks like.
Even non-Trekkies recognize the Enterprise. It is what it is, and it is iconic.

2. X-Wing Fighter(Star Wars)
Frankly, Star Wars bores me to tears, so much so that I can't remember many of the main ship designs, but I must admit that the X-Wing Fighter is a classic that even non-SW fans recognize and appreciate.

3. Death Star(Star Wars)
Again, I'm no fan of Star Wars, but the Death Star is the Death Star. Everyone knows the name, everyone knows that it's a huge, black, spherical ship(kind of like the Heart of Gold!), and that it is Darth Vader's ship.
It's an icon.

4. Klingon Bird-of-Prey(Star Trek)
Alien spaceships other than flying saucers tend to play second fiddle to "human" ships, but I'd have to say that the second-most recognized ship in the Trek 'Verse, next to the Enterprise, would be a Klingon Bird-of-Prey. Maybe even a Romulan Bird-of-Prey, but defintely a Klingon Bird-of-Prey.

5. Shiny Football-Shaped Spaceship(Flight of the Navigator)
I'm pretty sure many of us here have fond memories of the Flight of the Navigator......and vivid memories of that odd-looking football-shaped spacecraft that the Navigator used.

6. Serenity(Firefly)
It's not as well known, but it's a design that, upon viewing, is quite memorable.
Actually, even in the general world of fandom, if you are not yet a Browncoat, you'll run into someone who is....thus exposing you to Serenity.
I'd seen the ship way before I'd even watched the BDM or the show, and immediately recognized it when I saw the movie. (I saw the BDM before the series.)

7. NSEA Protector/Protector II(Galaxy Quest)
It's also not as well known, but it's also quite an interesting, memorable design. Once you've seen it, it's hard to forget.

8. ID-4 Mothership(Independence Day)
Yes, it's yet another flying saucer, boys and girls. But it is a flying saucer that not only has the unique feature of a textured, symbol-inscribed outside(most your UFOs, as you know, are depicted as shiny and smooth), but also one of the most memorable movie scenes ever....the scene in which it destroys the White House.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Heck, I can come up with FIVE iconic ships just from 2001: A Space Odyssey

1) The Pan-Am Space Clipper
2) The "Wheel" Space Station (Space Station V)
3) The "moon bus"
4) Discovery
5) The "pods" from Discovery. Evil little buggers, those pods. :)

And that doesn't even include the Moon Lander from the movie.

As for the most iconic, Discovery and its pods have to rank right up there, but the Millenium Falcon or the original Enterprise from Star Trek are probably the most iconic of all.

But don't forget the giant alien ships from Independence Day, either.

It's a good movie, but it does get a bit confusing. It's not a bad idea to read the book so you have a clue what's going on.

My favorite ships:

Enterprise NCC-1701D. I grew up with that ship. I've always loved it. I own the blueprints.

Millenium Falcon. Also have blueprints.

Serenity. Hey, blueprints there too. I think I have a collection going here...

Does the DeLorean count? I mean, by some theories, time and space are the same thing...

And for that matter, what about the Wardrobe to Narnia? Okay, okay. That's too much of a stretch. Sorry.

I'm not really sure about a top ten, but I know that my number 1 pick is definitely the Tardis, I mean it's by far the most unique ship I've ever seen.

Nothing wrong with the previous lists, however the Gunstar from the Last Starfighter is as cool as they come.

How about the Mothership from 'V' Instant classic - modified for Independence Day.

The Martian 'Cobra-esque' styled ships in War Of The Worlds.

and Klatu's ship in Day the Earth Stood still.

What, none of the ships from Babylon 5?! Not the Minbari cruisers, the living Vorlon ships, the Earth destroyers, or even the classic Starfury?!!

No love for the car ship in Mom and Dad Save the World? Might have been a VW, or maybe a wagon.
