I was watching my BR copy of FF series Jaynestown and I could not believe my ears - Zoe utter Mal's name instead of her usual "sir".

Did anyone else ever catch this before? It happened right after Zoe tells Book to put away his hair (having scared River). Mal and Wash return to the boat and she tells Mal about their contact.

I had never noticed that before, and I've seen this episode countless times.

It is funny how that happens. The show is so rich with details.

Maybe the post-it note telling the writers to make sure Zoe calls him sir fell off the keyboard while they were typing out the scene. Of course she really does not have to do that anymore. I think she just does it out of habit from her military days. She has never been shy about letting Mal know when he is wrong. Something you would not do in the military. My favotrite scene is when Mal foolishly shames Kaylee about her owning a party dress. Zoe gave him a look that needed no words. Her face said "You are an idiot."
Sometimes I think she is just being sarcastic. Like in "out of Gas" when she says "Won't happen again sir."

There has been some discussion about calling Mal sir on another thread. He was a sargent and in some branches of the service they are given the respect of being called sir while in others they are called sargent. Sir is only given to commissioned officers. Of course we are talking five hundred years later. All things change.

I beg to differ. People most certainly let the people above them know when they are wrong, or making poor decisions in the Military. It's just that it's done at appropriate times in appropriate ways, much of the time subtly. As in, you're not going to call your CO a f**k face in front of "the men" nor argue with him/her in the middle of a fire fight, etc. But, you certainly aren't going to fall into harms way for nothing.

Yes, it's true that Zoe certainly has a very definitive way of expressing her displeasure with Mal, or anyone, who does something dumb.

I brought up on another thread that she shoots him a "look" in the pilot in Badger's office when she finds out that the Alliance goods were marked.
But I too like the scene you mention when Mal insults Kaylee.

But here's something that just came to my mind - in Jaynestown Mal takes Wash along instead of Zoe who stays with the ship. So my theory is she was relaxing and being like Wash minding the ship, so she lets down her hair (so to speak) and talks like Wash by calling him Mal while giving him the latest news regarding their rendevous.

Zoe calls Mal "Sir" because he is now the Captain.

Need to re-watch the battle scenes to see if she called him "Sir" when he was a combat sergeant.
