In a word, Yes. But you do need a HDTV in order to connect a Blu-Ray player with a HDMI cable.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

It is the main reason I recently purchased a PlayStation 3 and a new 1080p HD television. I've only watched the pilot and The Train Job so far, but I don't regret the expense at all. Also, last night I watched Blade Runner: The Final Cut, and was dazzled by the detail. In nine days I will be buying Serenity again.

Yeah,I got an HDTV and have been using an upscaling dvd player, andI'm pretty happy with it.The other day I was watching Spiderman 3 on blue ray at Best Buy and was impressed.I wasn't thinking of buying one though. Then I saw Firefly Blu-Ray,and I really started wanting one.I had no idea that Serenity was around the corner...that film would look fantastic wouldn't it?

Yep, got it last Sunday, and I did have to drive to the next town to get it. It was on sale, but my local BB still didn't have it.

I want to say another thing about Blu-Ray in general and Firefly specifically. This is something that should be a personal decision since the players and tvs are not cheap (although coming down in price all the time). I've never been one who has had to have all the latest tech gadgets, but I'm a big tv and movie buff so for me it was an easy decision to make.

I don't think it really matters what format of video you have or how good the resolution of your tv is, Firefly is still the greatest thing out there, but mainly for the story and the characters. I've watched Serenity (the pilot) twice in the past couple of weeks, the Blu-Ray version, on both my older 720p set and now my new 1080. This also happens to be at least the 25th time I've seen it, and it is still as compelling as ever, but I think I would feel the same way if I was watching my old VHS tapes recorded off the Sci-Fi Channel.

Ditto. I was in awe of the BDM at the screening in Raleigh on Dec 4 and I've lost count as to how many times I've seen it. But I'm salivating at seeing it in Blu-Ray.

BTW Stand alone players cost less (and are rapidly getting cheaper) than the glorious PS3, but make sure they have an internet connection for firmware updates and interactive content. Some really cheap ones don't.

i thought i replied to an earlier post concerning firefly on blu-ray but it's worth repeating for sure!
i bought firefly on blu-ray last month and i can tell you it's worth every penny ! yes, i had to buy a blu-ray player (panasonic) for $250 and i do have a hdtv (panasonic 42in. 1080i) only but i like the extra commentaries not available on the regular dvd box set.it's clearer and looks,i don't know, more real than the regular dvds...i think the extra features is what sold me...i can't imagine what the shows would look like on, let's say, a sony 1080p 120hz or even a vizio 1080p 120hz ...
now it's time to shop for serenity on blu-ray (available december 30th ?) keep flyin' my friends...

A question: Why is it that Mummy 3 doesn't look as good on standard DVD as Its predecessors? Same with Indy 4?
It's a CONSPIRACY!!!! They don't bother transferring movies well onto DVD any more to try to get us to buy Blu-Ray!!!!
Isn't that it??

You may be onto something. I noticed that a while back. I love my CRT television, but only watch classic tv dvd's on it.
By the way Chrisisall, you can now purchase a 42" 1080P LCD tv in the $700 dollar range. Name brands too like Toshiba, Philips, and JVC.

Like, I watched Crystal Skull, and the next day I watched Last Crusade, and the difference was stunning. If I checked the bit rate, I bet it would be like when they first started making DVD's back in '97.
DVD's are now the alien trash of the entertainment galaxy

I know. No Country for Old Men looked horrible on s-dvd. But not every standard dvd looks so bad.

And you have to realize that Blu-Ray will always be a niche market. It will never be adopted into the mainstream like s-dvd. Standard dvd, I'm thinking we have another 10 good years left in it.

The studios have to rethink how to master a film on dvd, because this new way looks pretty poor.

Remember Superbit? Now there was an idea. My Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon still ranks as one of the best looking discs I own. Even better than most of my Blu-Ray discs.

My Superbit Spider-man kicks arachnid butt.
Plus, my T2 Extreme Edition looks virtually as good as Blu-Ray if the write-ups are correct, certainly, it's the best looking DVD I own! They can trick out standard, it just makes 'em more money to upgrade the hardware.

I got the Planet of the Apes Blu-Ray set. It has all five films(not the Tim Burton crap version) and comes with an amazing book on the films. Add to that new special features, and a very noticeable improvement in video, and audio. And you have a definitive set that simply can't be improved upon. It's things like this that make me love Blu-Ray. I'm gonna spend Christmas w/ the Apes

i would like to thank those being honest. Perhaps with this level of honesty we might find out which players or monitors produce a visual worthy of our BDS and BDM. Be nice to know what does not work, so that when trying to make new converts we don't inadvertently expose them to known problems, diluting their experience.
i do hope to get a BR version, as long as it is superior in all ways - otherwise why waste the money for inferiority? I am not one gullible enough to fall for the shinyness of all "new" formats - I know many are flawed.
Also thanks for specifying which monitor mfgrs and models and players are being used, and their results.
