What if the show lasted all of 22 episodes? what do you imagine the season finale would've been like? What sort of cliffhanger do you see happening? What would be the last thing you'd see before seeing "to be continued"?

I picture a few scenarios:

1) Serenity is being chased down by Reavers and some of the crew manage to escape while the rest make a futile attempt to keep the Reavers from entering the ship.

2) A previous guest villian (Niska, maybe Atherton Wing) would be chasing down Serenity and they would hit Serenity as the ship was entering atmo.

3) Blue Hands (in their badass ship) find Serenity and capture River. As they leave, they disable Serenity.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Knowing Joss and his plot twists, it could be anything.

I think it would have been something pretty bad, and likely promising mayhem for our big damn heroes. Perhaps Niska returning and capturing the crew and Serenity to get some payback on Mal & crew for foiling his revenge in "War Stories".

It could involve Reavers, and perhaps even a scenario like the one you outlined.

It is always fun to set back and think up little scenarios like these and try to imagine scripts on your own.

Well, being a fan of both Buffy and Angel - over the years I've read a number of interviews that have said that Joss Whedon is not a fan of the cliffhanger. I think there is only one season ender (angel, season three) that can truly be considered needing resolution in the next's season's opener. All the other season's were complete units of storytelling.

I think he prefers for each season of his shows to be a complete story unit - just in case of cancellation or whatever.

Of course there is nothing to say that he wouldn't change his mind and opt for cliffhangers on Firefly. But even if firefly hadn't been cancelled, it would have been near cancellation instead - so I'd bet a nervous Joss would opt for a two-part finale, eps. 21 & 22.

I am guessing the ending would have something to do with River, mostly. I agree that the Blue Hands would be involved - and at some point she would master some of that psychic strength and kick their asses.

-separate in itself, but setting up exciting new crime (uh, i mean stories) for the next season

Oh oh oh oh!!! I know I know!!!!

Serenity is being smacked around in space by someone. . .Alliance, Reavers, BSC. . .

It looks like it's the end for our intrepid crew, and at the last minute, Mal turns to Wash and says, "Activate the Omega 13!!!!!"

Cut to black. . .To Be Continued.

Or has that been done?

"Wash. . .we got some local color happening. A grand entrance would not go amiss."

It could have been one of those terrible we've lost our spaceship moments. Not destroyed but stolen. Ouch!!

From what I've seen on Buffy, Angel and then Firefly, I realise how different a show Firefly is, and not just for obvious reasons. I suspect the finale would have been nothing we could have easily forseen. It may have involved some of the elements mentioned, as they are integral and not resolved, but its the blend I think we would miss.

One of the best things I've enjoyed about Joss Whedon's writing is that he comes up with the unexpected. Partway through an episode you settle in and have a clue of where its going, which is comforting, and then he throws a massive spanner in the works and you're back on the edge of the couch, watching intently.

For a finale, I think it would have been more than one danger, as something like River being kidnapped would not have bothered Jayne, whereas Reavers affects everyone, but its not something you can take very far without exposing all their secrets. So far they work better as a creepy monster when you don't know what they look like etc. There again, it would be a blend, one element feeding off another to mix into something bad, and right in the middle of the story, end the episode, or have a partial resolution if the next season had been unsure, which seems the pattern of late. I kinda dont want to speculate too much, just in case we get too close to the idea lurking in the back of his grey matter.

I don't think it would've been a cliffhanger, and the final scene of the episode would've looked like the final scene on the series finale on TNG, but instead of poker, they show the crew eating their meal, and the camera slowly pulling back, out the window, and Serenity slowly flying into the black.

As for the rest of the episode: blue hands allied with Niska and Early. Atherton Wing was too much of a putz to be a recurring villain.

Not the cliff-hanger, but during the final episode the blue hands have caught up with River. Jayne tries to protect her, but one of the blue hands pulls a brain melting stick out on him and he can't bring a gun to bear. As blood is pouring from his nostrils, River steps in between, mentally fighting him off... until the 2nd blue hand joins in and then she isn't strong enough. Just as the blue hands look like they are going to win, Jayne has recovered, shoots one in the head, and they both instantly drop down dead.

Either that, or maybe Zoe gets naked

Possibly Book is found to be former Aliance comander from Serenity Valey (see "Was Book at Serenity Valey" thread for the logic here)

Mal loves his crew, but what would happen if an upright kind of guy were in his and Zoe's sights and the rest of the crew thought they should get over it, I mean he's a Shepheard for cryin' out loud.

Just as the crew hits the outside snag which requires unity.

As within, also without.

Ooooh, I like that better. Maybe the whole crew gets naked? Though I'd prefer Kaylee, River and Inara naked in addition to Zoe, but I guess the menfolk would have to get naked too, just to draw in ratings the womenfolk in the audience...
