You just gotta wonder what goes on in a PhD Engineer's mind when they read this posting. Cracks me up thinking about it.

"Browncoats name the Space Station." Headlines in the New York Times.

I just went to the NASA site through the link above and the screen camer up empty as fas as choosing a selection, so I went to the NASA home page and then to the Name the module three contest and it gave the top 10 selections without Serenity there. WTF

Maybe their site is having problems. I logged into mynasa and then went to the contest where there was the traditional list of five names with Serenity among them. I was not allowed to vote for some reason, but it was there.

That HACK!! (Yeah, that's what I saw on his show just moments ago too, just after I was thinking, "Wow, what if Stephen Colbert gave Serenity the Colbert Bump?! We might have an ally!") My dreams were immediately dashed. I love Stephen Colbert, but it's time to declare war on him.

Vote, vote!! (notes that the site isn't loading the poll very well, darn those Colbert fanatics!)

At least someone posted this module-naming news for at least the second time just moments ago (I think) over at Whedonesque... Wonder how long before someone comments on Colbert's call to arms? I would, but I'm not a registered member over there.

*sigh* time to hit up the other Firefly forums I've come across in an effort to deter Colbert's manic fans. They didn't get a presidential candidate nomination, so you can bet they'll seize on this opportunity.

Colbert mentioned how his DNA got taken up to the space station... well, Firefly DVDs were on the space station (or at least the shuttle Atlantis) before Colbert's DNA! He needs to know when he's been beaten.

Edit: they just updated Whedonesque again. I'd say they're well aware that this means war. tee hee!

Edit again: The votes tallied have jumped 175 or so in the last 15 minutes... :( Not good.

So if I were to post the following topic at Colbert Nation... would it help with publicity for our cause or just make matters in the voting polls worse? Whatcha think?

"Of course, you realize this means war."

"Stephen Colbert, many of us love you. We even believe you are America and so can we, or so our dollars that we traded for your book would indicate. We would have voted for you, had become a presidential candidate. But you have done the unforgivable. You have mobilized the Colbert Nation against the Whedonverse.

That's right; it is no mere coincidence that the name Serenity is the highest result in the polls. The Browncoats, dedicated to the interests of reviving our beloved Firefly and Serenity, have taken it upon ourselves to win the highest number of votes. Remember, we have done the impossible before, and that makes us mighty. And here we were hoping for a Colbert bump on behalf of Joss Whedon and Firefly/Serenity! Well, we just may get it after all, haHA.

And by the way, Firefly DVDs were on the space station before your DNA was, thanks to Steven Swanson!"

I'll take any and all feedback, of course! Gotta wait on fellow Browncoat approval before posting a message like this one. :)

That's happened to me and a couple of other folk. I think the site "knows you" now, and won't let you vote again. (Unless you get reset after 24 hours.)

If you go back to the poll on a different machine you should be able to get there.

I tried a variety of cache-clearing and similar trickery, but to no avail. Then it occurred to me I was trying to outsmart NASA...

Not sure what's up; I can see the percentages just fine. We're holding at 86% if that thing can be believed, but I don't think it factors the suggestions in because I'm *certain* they would have made a dent by now. Colbert has definitely moved to the top of the write-in votes, though we can't see percentages on those. Last night the vote total had about 100055 votes (right after I heard Colbert's announcement). Now it has 117893. If I crunched the numbers right, before the titans clashed, Serenity had about 86000 votes.

Okay... I won't post my challenge over there unless I get a vote of approval here, though I doubt anything I write could stir them up as much as his call to arms did anyway. :P My "speech" was slightly incendiary.

Mostly keep voting and spread the word to other Firefly sites, right? I see that Whedonesque took down the post from last night (maybe someone thought it was off-topic...?).

Edit: in the span of writing my post, the poll is now up to 119575. We may be in trouble.

There's a post from the Colbert Nation forums that smacks of a challenge to see just which fanbase has more time on their hands. Basically they're cheating the system.

Thankfully the poll IS bot-proof, but not crazed-with-time-on-their-hands-fan-proof. Someone help me think up an appropriate Firefly quote for this situation? If it's any consolation, Xenu fans seem as up in arms about losing their top suggestion space as we are about Colbert being there. They've declared war too. ;)

Edited.

From contest rulles on the website:

I don't think that NASA will choose 'Colbert', so I say we keep voting for 'Serenity' and see what happens.

They can try to cheat but I don't think it will work.

I checked the number of votes right after I heard Stephen mention the voting. Just under 101,000 at around 2:50 AM Eastern. Now it's just under 128,000? That 27,000 votes in under 12 hours. We might be on top for another day or two, but even if voting for Colbert dies down considerably, we will be done for soon. I say we send a letter (or letters) to Colbert's people, asking that Colbert tell his fans to change their vote to Serenity (or something like that. Tell him about our fight for more Firefly or... SOMETHING. Maybe he would mention us Browncoats on the show, while he crushed us, at the least (no, probably not, I know). Anyway, still doing my voting. It's pointless, but I'm not giving up without a fight... well, it's going to be more like a whimper, but whatever.

Hey, yeah. If he beats us, we can at least go for a mention on his show. That'd be good publicity for the cause... Maybe. If it's not delivered in the sense of "look at these silly fools we have beaten," but instead "today we have defeated a worthy adversary."

Can I start making references to Serenity Valley?
