My apologies- I've been a viewer, not a poster, since Firefly was first on TV, went to every Serenity pre-screening- in Boston and then Providence, RI, and have really followed everything Joss has done ("Steve's Song"?) since, and can't understand why they would ignore an existing fan base that has sold millions of copies of a story that remains untold in Firefly to begin a new one in Dollhouse. Not that I'm complaining about Dollhouse- but my question is, when FOX sold the rights to Universal to produce Serenity, does that mean it's now up to Universal to capitalize on the fanbase that exists supporting Firefly? Or could FOX continue the story, if they chose to? And if they could, what kind of logic are they using to start a whole new universe, when one already exists with plenty of people in it?

That is a question we've been pondering for quite some time.

Technically, Fox still owns the rights to Firefly, they aren't really eager to let that go, even though they aren't making more. It might be up to Universal to collect on the fanbase now, but apparently Serenity didn't do as well as the suits at Universal had hoped, so, Fox is cashing in on the half-series they produced, because they don't want to let the rights to that go. Universal is on the fence about Serenity, because it didn't make the money they hoped for.
In short, Fox could continue the story of Firefly, if they chose to, but they now have other things going, so that's doubtful. Only Joss would know what kind of logic to use to bring back Firefly, as it once was, so I don't think anyone really knows what's going to happen in The 'verse.

As I understand it, they only sold Universal the MOVIE RIGHTS.

Kind of like how when an author or their publisher negotiates movie rights with a studio, they still own the original book and franchise.

Who really expects Fox to admit they were WRONG? Restarting a series that they cancelled to begin with would be tantamount to saying WE ARE STUPID.

Fishman you have asked the $64 Billion question (I had to adjust from million due to inflation).

Here's my theory (with this and a quarter you can buy a bag o' chips):

Fox sells the movie rights to Universal and crosses their fingers that it makes money. Yes, bear with me, you heard right. Fox had to be hoping that it would make truckloads of cashey-money because then it would justify re-lighting the Firefly series whereby - wait for it - they can then make truckloads of money continuing the series with DVD sales (that made them a ton of cash up until today).

They also are holding onto their TV rights because if, for example, Universal decides to buy those rights they can back up several Brinks trucks. I believe I read somewhere that Fox has the rights until either 2010 or 2012. Also it is my guess that they don't want to eat and won't let anyone else grab a bite of the pie. But mainly I think it's like JewelStaiteFan said - they don't want to look foolish (actually JSF used STUPID).

Fox stupid, naaahhh. They are as cunning as a FOX. No wait, if they made more FF they would make a ton of cash - regardless. They would make STOOPID stacks of cashey-money. No...well...uh, I choose my first thought, like they say in my neighborhood - Yo, that's WACK!

It's sad really.

I think we can forget about Firefly ever coming back as a series in the form it was before, because Joss said so in an interview at an Australian convention. Joss said the elements which made the television series work so well are now gone and it would be next to impossible, so he is more focused on the movies.

First of all you can throw “logic” out the window!

If this were a card game you can trump “logic” with greed, power and having no balls. F*>< is all about money ( forget anything about art and just plain good entertainment) Yet it is funny if that no one at that network would just come forth and admit that there’s a ton of profit to being made and with a strait to dvd FF or continuation of the BDS there‘s a load of $$$ just on the horizon. Course no one at the network has the guts to admit that.

Universal helped the sale Firefly with it’s investment in making the movie Serenity. At first F*>< laughed at Uni because Serenity did so poorly at the BO ( I am a shameful browncoat for not seeing both at the start) but now eyebrows are lifting and we’ve reach the “ Holy smokes, this could make some bread” phase. That doesn’t mean that either company are willing to admit to mistakes. It only means that FF and Serenity are not dead and still making money. F*>< with their greed also brought Uni to the courts with the “Watchman” movie coming out. Do the research and you’ll see the truth.

The fans (and browncoats) are what keep the FF franchise alive. We refuse to admit defeat. A lesser show would have fell into the ditches long ago but not FF. There is hope still. Does F*>< HATE the browncoats? I think so. We are that ever reminder that they F***ED up ( sorry bout that I usually don’t post like that) Anyway………..

Keep the faith, stay alive and keep holding the line, Z

Ok, so FOX (I think it's hilarious, by the way, that no one can say it) still has the rights, and technically COULD resurrect the series, but they won't because of pride? How much money was involved with Family Guy for them to swallow their pride and bring that back? Anyway, I guess these conversations are all inconsequential, as a very wise man once said, "You can't always get what you want."
I'm hoping for another strike so we can get Dr. Horribles' Sing along blog Part 2!

Or at least the Broadway musical. I'm sure there's a part in DHSAB for Hugh Jackman.

I'm also wondering now what will happen when Fox's rights are up in 2012 (Guys, that's only 3 years away. Does it mean that Joss can shop it around again (really thinking another movie is more likely though)?

So far Fox has squashed the Firefly RPG due to wanting more money (according to my game playing daughter, she keeps up with all that sort of stuff)but they gave us the really shiny Blu-Ray version of the series.

I would actually pay to see Wolverine sing in that musical, and I'd bring my daughter, who knows all the words by heart- and I'd cover her ears during the "The hammer is my !@#%" part, just like in the DVD!
Some people get Joss, some don't.
Glad my daughter is one of them- can't wait till she can see all of Firefly- although I am jealous of anyone who is seeing it for the first time...

Does anyone notice a pattern here with Fox (owned by the man behind the curtain Rupert Murdoch, a devout ultra-neocon-robot-cackling-star-wars-emperor-type supervillain set on ruling the world) PHEW!

Anything that seems to question authority or showcase the plight of the common man at the hands of the establishment, he wants to subject to ridicule and ruin. First FF (which does both of the above-mentioned) and then Watchmen, which is set in an alternate universe and may tell a similar story.

Why else would they want to stop these stories from being told. Finally I see it, Fox is not interested in cashey-money. They want to stop the Watchmen film from ever being shown, as they want to keep the story of our BDH from ever being told - it's not about money for them (or rather for Murdoch) it's about an ideology - FREEDOM.

Think about it - I read an article in Variety that stated that the Fox lawyers and top execs don't care about being paid for the copyright infringement in the Watchmen case. They just want to stop the movie from being shown - WHY? and I repeat WHY? It is extremely curious to me that they would make such a statement. They sat on the Watchmen project for over 17 years. All they want to do is sabotage the movie's opening and possible success. Without a doubt this is WIERD!

Fox, despite their apparent support for Joss to shop FF around, had no intention of ever releasing their rights. Just look at their strange behaviour. Stands to reason.

I know this a bit off topic, but my take on this whole situation is a bit different. FOX has no interest in working directly with Joss. They have made that clear by NOT taking advantage of the opportunity to get FIREFLY back on the air (and reap the benefits of pandering to us browncoats). The only reason Dollhouse exists, is because FOX loves Dushku. She is the one with the deal with FOX. FOX wanted a Dushku show and Eliza went to Joss and asked him to write the show for her. Don't confuse the matter. By putting Dollhouse on FOX, they are not saying "we love Joss", they are saying "we love Dushku".

I'm just hoping for a dollhouse episode that centers around a rich FIREFLY fan who comes to the Dollhouse wanting to be MAL for a weekend.....
