I am a recent convert to firefly and I must say I am extremely disappointed in myself for waiting so long to watch this show. For the first 2/3rds of my life I one true scifi love, Star Wars. When I get into something, I really get into it and to say I was REALLY into Star Wars would be the biggest understatement ever. I am one semester away from graduating college with a major in history and despite this there is no doubt I know more about the history of the Star Wars Universe than our own. Despite this my faith in that Verse is irreversibly damaged, the clone wars movie being the nail in the coffin. I can still appreciate the movie of old, but I needed something fresh and Firefly was my savior. So I watched the series and the movie recently and loved them both. The only thing I could do when it was over was run out and get the comics. My only disappointment was that its over. Compared with the vast amounts of media the Lucasempire has been spewing there is virtually nothing. I mean no disrespect, hell its amazing a cancelled show got its own movie and comic series, but like many of you, I am sure, I cannot help but want more. Getting caught up with the Firefly media was a breeze, now I would like to get caught up with the community. This bring me to my first question, not why the show was canceled, but rather why after seven years of displaying an obvious strong and dedicated fan base no network wants to pick up the show? It seems as though everyone accepts Fox's blunders as the main reason for the downfall and there are many fans so why won't a network even chance it? I feel like I am missing something in the story or am just completely naive in the workings of TV networks, please let me know. Finally I was also wondering what could be done to help the chances of there being more movies/shows/comics besides the obvious of purchasing what there is. So yea.

This question has been asked many times here, with various answers,
In summary, Fox owns the rights to Firefly, which is why no continued works use that name. They won't allow another network to use the name or the property.
Universal owns the rights to Serenity, which is why most of the new products use the Serenity name. The movie did break even eventually, but that;'s not what studios want - they want bug bucks.

Welcome aboard.

There are two things to do now:

One is spread the word of Firefly, meet other Browncoats, go to a con.

Two is support Joss and the BDHs by watching their shows, buying Firefly/Serenity merchandise and buy dvds.

Have you watched Done The Impossible? Its the fan documentary about the fans from Firefly to Serenity.

Welcome to the party.

My attitude is that you've gotta be in this for the long haul. I'm old enough to have been an original Trekkie- it was 10 years after the show was cancelled that the first movie was made, and TNG was even after that.

So we've had our movie, and now we're gettin' by on comics and fanfics. We'll keep up the pressure, and keep showing a presence, and brag about what we've done, and Someday, we'll get more.

Welcome to the 'Verse.

NewoldBrowncoat is right. Star Trek was cancelled after 2 seasons and some 10 years later movies were made and spinoffs were spawned. That thought alone gives me hope that someday we will get our BDH back.

Joss and all the cast members love the 'Verse and would drop whatever to continue telling the story of these characters hurtling out in the black of space. So pass on the word and keep posting.

We hold, we hold until the Captain gets back!

the long haul, yea thats what i figured :/. So fox still owns the rights to the series, but has there been attempts by other companies to purchase the rights?

So... how recently has Joss confirmed he's still interested in a rebirth? That's the one question I haven't been able to turn up in my short time researching. All the stuff I read is dated 2007 or something.

I know he's kinda busy with Dollhouse now, but since he's still not willing to write a Mal/Inara resolution graphic novel, does that mean there's still legitimate hope or is he just too busy to think about Firefly or say that he is/isn't still flyin'?

Hi, DashRendar! I think you beat me here. :) Nice to meetcha!

2009. So Joss is ready. Joss and the actors are all becoming more popular every day.

Matt: When can we expect a Serenity 2 movie; and if never, can you tell us what Inara's secret was?

Joss: I'm not giving up Inara's secret - although I believe Morena has at conventions. Thanks, darling. But nobody has ever approached me about doing a movie, except fans. When somebody in a suit does, then I'll know that the landscape has changed. Basically, I'm at the ready. The moment they say "Go!" I'll start gathering the troops again; but nobody has.

Dollhouse is wrapped. Nathan's new TV show starts Monday, 3/9/2009. Probably wrapped by now. ABC has been advertising Castle like crazy. In movie theaters, new promos on ABC each week.

The more people see of our Big Darn Heroes, the more they want to see of our Big Darn Heroes...which leads them back to Firely/Serenity.

Hey newbie,

Welcome and have you seen Serenity: The Other Half comic Online!

Joss can write stuff that doesn't involve the inside of the ship. He also can fund stuff himself like Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Nathan's character is Captain Hammer. He also has said he is acceptable to funding things by donationa or setting a budget based on pre-sales.

So Whoo-hoo! There is hope.

Seriously?! He'd consider funding stuff by donations and pre-sales? Who does that these days, truly trusts their fanbase that much? Wow, I'm seeing more and more why Browncoats put so much faith in Joss.

Yep. Also because Joss loves Firefly/Serenity even more than we do. Same with Nathan Fillion etc. Joss funded Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog (See http://drhorrible.com ) himself with actors working without pay for a percentage of the profit and the joy of working on a Joss Whedon project. Itunes etc has since paid all the bills even before the DVD came out.

Joss posts about donation or subscription or budgeting through pre-sale.
Quote:

I think donation or subscription -- or just budgeting through pre-sale -- models are kind of interesting. The guild was fan-financed its first season -- one of the internet structures I'm investigating could be similar. The more direct connection between the fan and the artist, the better. It would be fun to announce a project with and actor and THEN find out what the budget was based on the fans.
