CELLARDOOR

Yes, we do seem to be still flyin' in! My wonderful cousins recommended Firefly to me last October and showed me the episodes "Serenity" and "Train Job" which I loved but put off due to financial constraints. What's a gal to do? Finally managed to pick up the DVD set a few weeks ago and given enough time to buy up the merchandise and post on enough boards, I hope I can call myself an aspiring Browncoat! (I... um, literally bought a brownish colored coat last weekend... but um... even though I'm sharing Firefly with my family now with positive results, I'm not quite ready to own up to the reasoning behind that purchase). hehe

Sad story: I did hear about Serenity (BDM) when it was in theaters, and I'm a lifelong Trek/Wars/Sci-fi fan. I asked someone about it who had seen the movie and they said, "Ah, I didn't think it was very good. It's kinda just a generic sci-fi movie. Not very interesting if you ask me, and I don't really think it's a must-see by any means." ... ...So I didn't go see it. I'm so sad it took me this long to discover it, but that's not stopping me from rewatching an episode every other day or so.

Right now I feel a bit like Simon or Book stepping into an unknown 'verse, but from what I've read in countless forums over the past few weeks, becoming part of the crew eventually is not unheard of. :)

I'm encouraged to see that the discussion of revival is still going on. Can't stop the signal, I hope! I'm curious to know what I can do (if there's anything beyond what's stated in the last newbie thread), even if it's just to discuss for now. I'm watching Dollhouse, for better or worse, and planning on watching Castle (though if that succeeds it means another cast member is tied up. Still, I'm not going to miss watching Nathan Fillion on a weekly basis). The nearest Browncoat group to where I live is not very active, unfortunately. Maybe they'll get a CSTS event going this year.

Funny how much you can start to learn about a thing in a few weeks if the motivation is strong enough. *sigh of relief* Whew, I found some fans. :)

NEWOLDBROWNCOAT

Welcome to the party.

One tiny nit I'll pick with you-- You're not an "aspiring Browncoat." You got all of the qualification required already. You've seen it, you're here, you're one of the family. Wade on in and enjoy-- ask questions or contribute opinions. If you're creative, write some fanfic or do some artwork and share it. If ya visit the RWED section, come armed-- it gets kinda fierce in there.

The official welcoming committee will be around tomorrow, probably-- I'm kinda a night owl around here myself-- with the goodies, the strawberries and Kaylee's interengine brew ( The Vintage Tuesday was good stuff...) and yer official Brown Coat. Meantime, the Mrs. just finished a pot of hot Wife Soup, and I got some fresh bao I'd be pleased to share. There were some Fruity Oatey Bars in the locker, but I think somebody already got 'em.

Howdy CELLARDOOR,

I would like to echo NEWOLDBROWNCOAT’s sentiments, watching episodes of FF every other day, recruiting others into the faith, buying FF apparel and joining fan forums! I would say that you are a full blown “browncoat”.

Welcome to the boards. Here ya go ( reaches into the nearest crew locker) Your very own virtual browncoat, slightly used of course so don’t mind the bullet holes but we‘ll get you a new one soon as a new shipment comes in. Firefly/Serenity lives on and we love hearing stories from new people.

Enjoy the forum. Drink plenty of mudders milk, it’s good for ya. We are glad to have you here.

Bullet holes make the virtual browncoat even better! To misquote Inara, I like a coat with a few miles on it. :) Thanks for the welcome. I haven't had dinner yet and it's been a stressful day so maybe some mudder's milk will fill me right up and knock me right out.

As for the name... It's one of the phrases Saffron uses in "Our Mrs Reynolds" and got me to thinking... J.R.R. Tolkien wrote in an essay that "Cellar Door" was to his ear one of the most beautiful sounding phrases in the English language (think of it with a British accent and it's a bit better). So how fitting that Saffron, suceeding very well at being alluring and beautiful, says, "My whole life, I saw nothing but roofs and steeples and the cellar door." She's using that phrase that was noted by a linguist (from Earth That Was) as being especially beautiful, and with her companion training she would have been well versed in such details too I think.

Just me being a linguistics nerd and wondering if Joss Whedon put that in as a small tribute to Tolkien. Dunno if he's a fan. Either that or he was referring to Donnie Darko's reference of the line spoken by Drew Barrymore. :) Joss Whedon, what a writer! I'd ask him about that one line if I got a chance.

I'm an English teacher, by the way. :P Again, thanks for the welcome! ;)

So, Lord of the Rings fan are ya Cellardoor?

I love the scene where Frodo turns to Sam and says,

“ Know what the chain of command is? It’s a chain I go get and beat your fury little feet with till you understand who’s in ruttin charge!”

Wait a sec, I might have mixed up my shows, sorry.

Just messin with ya, Z

PS: Chris is right you should check out Buffy.

I buy up copies when they're around $20 here and save them for potential distribution. Now you can turn on other fans by pointing them over to Hulu to watch all the episodes - that is, if they have adequate Internet, or, y'know, ANY Internet.

So if your plan is to start recruiting - and we all should - I'd suggest getting a second copy of the DVDs to have around as a loaner set. I did that for awhile and it worked pretty well.

That was me as well back when the series was first cancelled. Desperate for it to go on.

Welcome CellarDoor,

You have seen Serenity by now right? Best Buy carries Serenity: Collector's Edition. Same movie...just tons of extras and cast Commentary.

Don't worry about Nathan or anyone else being busy. Castle has probably wrapped by now. Dollhouse has wrapped.

All Joss has to do is call. Joss and the crew love working together. Alan was in a stage production when Serenity was filmed. They will work it out.

Matt: When can we expect a Serenity 2 movie; and if never, can you tell us what Inara's secret was?

Joss: I'm not giving up Inara's secret - although I believe Morena has at conventions. Thanks, darling. But nobody has ever approached me about doing a movie, except fans. When somebody in a suit does, then I'll know that the landscape has changed. Basically, I'm at the ready. The moment they say "Go!" I'll start gathering the troops again; but nobody has.

Look at how Joss was able to film Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog in a week. Nathan is Captain Hammer. http://drhorrible.com

All Castle and Dollhouse and everything else does is make our Big Darn Heroes more popular. The more people see of our Big Darn Heroes, the more they want to see of our Big Darn Heroes...which leads them back to Firefly/Serenity.

What do I do if I want to hold a screening in my town but there’s no willing or reasonably priced cinema, not enough Browncoats, or there’s not enough time to get it done for this year?

Become anAffiliate City/Town and hold an event like a quiz night, a BBQ or a bakesale in the name of CSTS. You’ll receive acknowledgment on the website for your efforts, be part of the CSTS community, and you’ll have helped support a really wonderful cause, Equality Now.

How to guide: http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/how-to/

Can't hold a screening. Have an Affliate City function. There is swag.
