OK. For you sci-fi Fanatics out there. I'm giving you my top five sci-fi favorites, and you put them in order 5 being the bottom, and 1 being the absolute best.

Here are the 5(note: I will reveal my order later in the thread).

-Blade Runner

-2001

-Planet of the Apes(1968)

-Aliens

-Silent Running

You can also mix it up and make your own top 5 list, but you must include at least one of the films I have mentioned.

Planet of the Apes - Fun to re-watch.
Blade Runner- A masterpiece. Good for when you're in one of those philosophical moods.
Silent Running - Profound. Good for when you feel the world has let you down.
Aliens - A shoot up. Good for when chums visit and you just wanna watch something to end the night.
2001 - Er... Well I guess if you've been smoking the carpet - the end to this is going to make you either see the birth of a universe or do your head right in! S'up to you.

My list.

1) Serenity - Hey it's the gang in Widescreen surround sound Blu Ray GLORY!!!!
2) The Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1950's) True nightmare imagery/notion (U.K. cut without the hollywood ending)
3) Tron - Unique and with the impending sequel on the way... Woah!
4) The Empire Strikes Back - The best of the Star Wars saga. Great action, cliffhanger ending and superb score by John Williams, dark, gritty and accomplished!
5) Planet of the Apes (1968) - As above

Good picks. Star Trek(The Voyage Home) almost made it in my top five. After all the tampering Lucas has done with Star Wars I just had to let it go. I want the original version that I saw in the theater on dvd. I know it exists as a "bonus disc" on the dvd copies out now. But no 5.1 audio, or anamorphic widescreen is a slap in the face to the original fans.

Here is the order fo my top 5:

5. 2001

4. Aliens

3. Silent Running

2. Planet of the Apes

1. Blade Runner

Tough call, but the Blade Runner dvd with 5 different versions of the film put it over the top for me. My only regret: I spent the summer of 82 watching E.T. when I cound have been watching Blade Runner on the big screen

That does suck big time. I own the new version, and I just close my eyes when Greedo shoots first, and when Jabba show up. Other than that, I love it.

1)-2001. THE stylistic and artistic trendsetter for every sci-fi film that followed. And an important message, to boot. Actually, several of them.
2)-Blade Runner. Again, important stylistically AND for its message.
3)-Silent Running. More important for its pro-ecology message than its style - but being that Douglas Trumbull, the FX guy from 2001, directed it, it definitely has a fantastic look. And it's got the precursors to C3PO and R2D2 in it - cute 'droids stealing the show!
4)-Alien. I found this one to be far creepier and atmospheric than and of its sequels. It set the mold for how to meld horror and sci-fi into one perfect package.
5)-Planet of the Apes(1968). A wondrous idea, diluted with far too many sequels...

My sentiments exactly.

Story, I like you. I respect you. But you really MUST see this movie. I thought it had the makings of a masterpiece when I first saw it in the theatre way back when (1973? So long ago!), and nothing has dissuaded me of that notion.

Blade Runner
Aliens
---------
2001
Planet of the Apes(1968)
Silent Running
---------

This is hard to do. I think it's like comparing supermodels. a 10 is a 10. Okay, only one of them is Emma Watson, but still.

I think I would second the addition of Gilliam to this list, and probably some others if I thought about it.

I was just watching pieces of the hogfather, I didn't have the whole thing because the dvd's all scratchy, I know it's not scifi, oh, there's a lot to waste time on here...

2001
Planet of the Apes (68)
Aliens (although I rate ALIEN as being slightly above)
Blade Runner (begrudgingly since I could never really connect with it to begin with)
Silent Running (never seen it)

I'd also throw in THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, THE THING, METROPOLIS, the BACK TO THE FUTURE trilogy, and my one personal fave, LAST NIGHT.

Of those you listed, I'd say my order would be:

1-Blade Runner

2-2001

3-Aliens

4-Planet of the Apes(1968)

5-Silent Running (which I haven't seen but I discovered I can "Watch Instantly" through Netflix!)

What qualifies a movie as classic under your definition? I agree that these are classics, but I'm wondering if Serenity is able to be considered classic yet or if it's too new or something. I'd put one of the original Star Wars movies there, and probably ST: Wrath of Khan but I'd have to think about it. :)

1. Serenity
2. Solaris (the newer one with George Clooney)
3. Dune (The miniseries, not the movie... i know this is technically cheating, but the movie sucked and the miniseries is too awesome to leave out)
4. Aliens
5. 2001

I don't think I'd qualify donnie darko as a science fiction movie, but it's definitely got some elements of scifi in there, and it's also an awesome movie
Also, although I didn't put it on my list, the original Star Wars trilogy is amazing as well

A classic sci-fi film in my opinion: Any film that has an important message to convey, visually pleasing and a strong cult like devotion by fans of it.

Serenity certainly fits.

I agree their lack of remorse is a bit troubling.

I don't hate the sequels like many do. I don't enjoy them nearly as much as the first, but I really appreciate the ambition of trying to turn a pair of massive action tentpole movies into philosophical arguments. I do think it is the best example ever of creators not really recognizing what made the first popular, and thus not delivering on those expectations in the follow-ups. But still, I greatly admire the sequels, even if I don't enjoy them all that much.

Not my take at all. The philosophical stuff was all there in the first, just amped up in the second.

The co-existance thing is logical. Had the humans "won" and unplugged everyone, like I think a lot of people expected, it would have meant millions of atrophied skinny people being dropped into an inhospitable climate and dying.

The idea that they toned down the carnage is a bit silly since most of the third movie is people getting slaughtered by machines anyway.

And the machine war idea was nixed by the studio, because they weren't going to pay for an expensive new movie that had none of the leads in it. That's why they still did the animated version.

No way, man, all they had to do was waste the agents & defrag the brain, then they could keep the Matrix running for the decade-long job of freeing suitably prepared minds that had been virtually trained for real life.

I didn't say they toned it down, just that they placed the we-can-resolve-conflict message right next to it.

Kinda my point - that's a pretty ballsy route to take for a big blockbuster trilogy, to end it with all the heroes dying. Hell, I went into the sequels expecting Morpheeus to bite it, and he's about the only one who did live.

If it makes you feel better: being taken over by an agent might well have the same effect on the victim as being unplugged did on Switch etc. In that case, by the time Neo and co get to kill an Agent, the innocent is already Soylent Green.

Congratulations though: picking that as your chosen stickle from the Swiss cheese that is the premise of the Matrix proves that you value human life above the laws of thermodynamics (humans use energy - they don't produce it).

Of course, the appeal of the Matrix is the style and atmosphere, not the plot. The first film was completely fresh - unfortunately, by the time the sequels came out, bullet time and fantasy Kung Fu had become cliched.

Meanwhile, back at the topic (we've probably had all the permutations by now):

1. 2001 (and I don't smoke! With films like this, who needs drugs?) - I doubt we'll see its like again, no director would be allowed to make a big budget film like this in such an experimental style.
2. Blade Runner - the story isn't much (and misses the point of the book) but, oooh, the atmosphere.
3. Planet of the Apes - which I don't actually like that much, but its so iconic it has to go in the big league.
DISCONTINUITY
4. Silent Running - make no mistake, its a very good film, just not up there with the giants.
5. Aliens - The zero'th amendment to the US constitution: if some is good, more is better! Sorry, but the original does more with less (and would have gone in at 3). Plus, it was directed by a guy who's previous claim to fame was making twee, nostalgic adverts for wholemeal bread - gotta love the irony.

Missing - think they've all been mentioned: Matrix 1; Brazil and/or 12 Monkeys; the Star Wars Episode of your choice (I'd go for "A New Hope" - it stuck to its Saturday serial roots without getting pretentions) and Close Encounters (the un -about-with version that knew when to hand the job over to your imagination).

Great stuff ImNotHere - I agree with much of what you've said.

1. 2001 - groundbreaking scifi, and not just one generation next level, but a huge advance in what scifi could be, both with story and film effects. I think we can even see some of it in Firefly with Joss's treating the 'Verse as more real, future fiction, and not the alien bugs from Planet Voltron future.

2. Star Wars - The first one It's a classic scifi film if ever there was one - to not list it is to give in to Lucas-Hate pressure. Just ask yourself how many times you saw it?

3/4 Alien/Aliens For reasons ImNotHere mentioned, Alien was such a psychological mind-frack step up for scifi - there was no other real world horror that could compare with the face hugger .. that btw had acid for blood. It also brought us H. R. Geiger and Ridley Scott at their peak. Aliens was arguably Cameron's best film, and had a great cast and a relentless story, perfectly paced.

5. Blade Runner - Quoting INH: "the story isn't much (and misses the point of the book) but, oooh, the atmosphere." + Rutger Hauer in his best role.

LOL, okay, I was goin' for the funny. Yeah, Matrix falls to bitty pieces upon any serious examination. Like what was that crap about "combined with a kind of fusion..." all about? Treknobabble bs because they couldn't make any sense out of it in real science.
Biggest pet peeve about the movie for me? It should have been funnier, given it's total lack or realism, that would have been a saving grace IMO.

1. Kubrick=Pure cinema heaven.

2.Blade Runner. May not be up to the book, but the story is still very intriguing on film. Atmosphere is just the icing on the cake.

3. Planet of the Apes, the most thought provoking film on the list in my opinion.

4. Silent Running, yeah thinking I should have switched this with Close Encounters....oh well.

5.Alien was more atmospheric than Aliens. Aliens is better. Cameron filmed Aliens in the UK, and apparently almost killed the entire crew in a fit of rage over their tea breaks. This is the same genius that brought us Titantic

Almost any scifi can be picked apart if you wish, including Serenity.

And I am so very glad they didn't make it funny. Not everything should be jokey. They offered Will Smith the role of Neo, and he wanted to add comedy, so they went with Keanu. Even Smith says now that he would have probably ruined the whole thing had they gone the way he wanted them to.

"I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him."
