Okay, I've been on the Colbert boards spreading the word of Firefly ever since the whole NASA mode naming thing. I've been getting a lot of flack from the people there because most of them only know Firefly as a show that was canceled because of low rating. The best way to fix this? Everyone jump on their boards and spread the word. I say we start here:

http://forum.colbertnation.com/tcr/board/message?board.id=TCR&message.
id=4743&jump=true#M4743

This was posted there:

"...a show that hasn't been on the air for 6 years because of poor ratings and a follow up film from 3.5 years ago..."

Anyone else with me?

Hey, Erik - while I applaud your enthusiasm, it sounds like a move more likely to annoy than to indoctrinate. I'd get a little irritated if some person or persons started posting on FFF.net for the sole purpose of convincing us what a great show that was that used to be on TV but isn't any more. Probably enough folks already have the idea that Firefly fans (and their ilk) are a bunch of obnoxious, hyper-sensitive Cheeto-heads. And while they may be right - at least in my case - no need to go reinforcing the view. I think there are better (meaning less confrontational) ways of winning hearts and minds...like mercilessly hounding your own immediate circle of friends 'til they stop answering your calls and refuse to come to the door (and in one case joined Witness Protection, but that's another story).

Is the NASA name contest ended yet? Last I heard, Serenity was in the lead.

ETA: I'm sorry - did I say indoctrinate? I meant, introduce.

It was like that when we got here!

Yeah, Serenity is winning by a wide margin, and Browncoats already have a rep for being obsessive brow-beaters. Invading another board likely won't help on either front.

"I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him."

In other words, I better back down as well... (my words, not anyone else's). I must have missed that post flaming the show. I don't entirely agree with backing down--no such thing as bad publicity?--but I do see your point, especially in light of that development. Although, I'm a huge fan of the Colbert Report too, so I'm kinda upset that my (former?) comedy news hero is being such a dweeb. Ok though, I'll try for no more thread bumping over there... Veteran Browncoats, with more experience than I, have spoken.

I'm just frustrated that Firefly is missing out on the Colbert Bump that's become so famous for anything that gets mentioned on his show, which is why I was posting over on the boards. Xenu fanatics were annoying as heck (the spam they posted was unbelievable) and got not only a mention on the show, they got a mini-skit complete with costume. Colbert has not mentioning Firefly/Serenity at all, only glade plugins and herbal teas in reference to the name "Serenity." The point about getting anything involved in Colbert's business is to be confrontational, in-your-face, and annoying. Though if you read the nature of the Serenity posts as compared to the Xenu posts, you'll see respect and decency vs. spammish go-se. Erik and I (and a few others) have been representing Browncoats as cordially as we are able.

So if we don't recruit people to post on the Colbert Nation forums en masse, please do at least keep voting for Serenity in the NASA poll yourselves, once a day!

We sniff the air, we don't kiss the dirt.

As far as number of actual votes, Colbert is winning, but Serenity is leading by a wide margin of votes for the "suggested names". NASA also has a disclaimer that they have final say on the name, and I can't see them naming part of the station after a comedy show host (and I say that as a Colbert fan). The vote ends on the 20th.

Exactly what I thought. Also, I was merely trying to get the info about Firefly out there on a thread or two in the forums there. I think that for the most part people there see Firefly as some failed Star Trek clone.

Yeah, how dare they go on they're own board, we need to sort that out!

How would you feel if they came here and decided to educate us? You're advocating trolling their board.

More insane ramblings by the people who brought you beeeer milkshakes!

Yeah I don't think this is such a good idea. They aren't even trashing the show from what you said. It is a show that was canceled for poor ratings.

Also I like the Colbert Report. He's done campaigns like this plenty of times. Can't get upset because this time it clashes with our goals.

Uh...don't you mean, "It is a show that was canceled for poor ratings, after FOX cruelly beat its trusting soul into submission and then defiled its half-dead corpse with a screwdriver."?

That's the version I heard.

But ayuh - Colbert's a good egg. I do find myself occasionally yelling "Shut up!" at the TV during some of his so-called interviews, but that's just me not getting properly into the spirit of the thing.

PPS - Brief nod to the Colbert Nation POV: How exciting is the name Serenity if you aren't a Browncoat? If you don't know the significance like we do, it's a pretty off-the-rack, standard-name-for-a-space-related-thingy type of name.

Stop throwing things! Like I said, Colbert POV.

It was like that when we got here!

No, I mean it's a show that was canceled for poor ratings. I think making excuses at this point makes us look crazy. We got a second shot with a movie and the result was relatively the same. I don't think Firefly would have nor will it reach popularity with a massive audience. It's not my goal to introduce Firefly to everyone. Just people that I think might enjoy it.

Fair enough, Zeek. I was just making a jokey little reference to the various allegations of FOX interfering with and/or mishandling the show. I don't think it's making excuses to acknowledge that this might have effected ratings, and maybe more so the chances of Firefly attracting and retaining viewers. Whether any of this would've made any difference, I have no idea. It is a quirky little show after all; like you say, it might never have reached any mass appeal.

But you're right - what happened, happened; what is, is. We are rich for having had her; poor for having lost her. (emoticonic reference to the duality of man)

Somebody stop me.

[CHEtoungueEK] But I am a little troubled by your apparent position that we should not be off spreading Firefly to the fuzzy wuzzies. [/CHEtoungueEK]

I personally don't think NASA will have the balls to name it anything else but Colbert on the Colbert show. I vowed never to watch the Colbert Nation again so I will be missing NASA's announcement.

DREAMTROVE

Colbert is fairly geeky, but his geek is out of date. His blind obedience to a liberal agenda of self destructive stupidity annoy me. But the overdose of ego is much more annoying. Still, he's occassionally funny, but watching an entire episode always makes me feel sick. Jon Stewart has been interesting though. I thought he'd be Obama's lapdog, but he's very much not. He has really taken him to task on bank bailouts, not getting out of the war, etc. If Colbert says anything against the admin. let me know, otherwise I find it hard to care.

*sigh* I'm trying to decide if I want to know that badly or not... I'm sure I'll read it on the 'net sooner or later.
