RIPWASH

Okay, I've been working pretty hard on my family . . . trying to get them to watch this great show. I got my 9 yr old hooked by letting him watch the first episode and "Bushwhacked". Unfortunately . . . he thinks those ruttin' Reavers are cool. Seeing as how I'm still upset over them killing Wash . . . I've got an issue with that.

But the BIG sell was my wife. She watched Train Job with me and, like so many others who watched that show first when it aired originally, she was confused about the relationships, why the Browncoats, all that stuff. I laughed because her biggest problem was that she didn't understand why Wash let Zoe go on such dangerous missions. But she was intrigued and admitted that she'd have to watch the first episode to possibly truly understand what was going on.

So last night we watched "Serenity" and at the end . . . she said she could watch more and that's a huge step. I think she's enjoying it but is reluctant to say so right now. She likes Nathan much better in "Castle" at this point.

Zoe: "Get it running again."
Mal: "Yeah"
Zoe: "So not running now"
Mal: "Not so much"
- Out of Gas

Well, I think Nathan is kind of appealing to more of his female fan demographic with Castle...

I give your wife maybe to the end of Shindig until the shift occurs. Any takers?

Your little boy is probably more intrigued by the concept and depiction of the Reavers as really neat monsters then as their potential for Wash killing. He'll also probably come around.

Your son's reaction to the reavers puts me somewhat in mind of this from Chris Rock:

Quote:

Kids are the cruelest, meanest, nastiest people on earth. Don't put anything past them. When the Pan Am jet blew up, people were talking about terrorists. I said, "Those f**king kids!"

As for Wash, he is one of my favorite characters, but I try not to blame the reavers too harshly for his demise - they were, after all, just doing Joss's dirty work.

As for your spouse, ByteMyte gives it 'til the end of Shindig at the latest...that's probably all it'll take, but surely by the end of Our Mrs. Reynolds. After 40 minutes or so of Mal's earnest befuddlement at the hands (etc.) of Saffron and his own crew, Mrs. RipWash will know she has met the real Nathan Fillion.

It was all Nathan-y like that when we got here!

Seconded, and side note: I still think the first part of Our Mrs. Reynolds, with the crew in the cargo bay, was the most hilarious fifteen or so minutes ever broadcast on television.

Your wife is in for a treat.

I get that. I know kids are ferocious. He's just hooked on the aspect that they're terribly mysterious and spooky.

I'm guessing my wife will be more into the series at the end of Shindig, as well. That's where Captain Tightpants comes from and she laughs every time I say it.

Ripwash, just to let you know that my better half wasn’t able to see the “Castle” premier but she was able to catch it later. I got a phone call from her last Saturday night. I was at work…..working overtime and the conversation went something like this:

“ Just wanted to call and tell you I’m in love!”

Me, “What?”

Mrs. Z ,” I just watched “Castle” and I’m in love with Nathan Fillion!”

Now another fellow may have been angry and hurt but I have to say that it didn’t bother me one bit. I told her as soon as they married and the newness wore off if could she ask her new hubby about setting me up with Morena or Jewel?”…..lol, we both had a good laugh.

Your wife is still in for a treat as far as watching and becoming attached to Firefly.

Z, out

Yeah - what lady could fail to be charmed by a man named "Captain Tight Pants"?

BTW, I trust you understand I wasn't slamming your son - just remarking on the "ooh, it went BOOM, cool" mentality of the typical pre-adolescent male.

It was like that when we got here!

Understood completely and not taken the wrong way. No worries. The thinks the Reaver ship in "Serenity" looks cool and the Reavers sound indestructable, so they're automatically awesome in his book. He doesn't get the connection I have to Wash, but he may get there yet.

Okay . . . so . . . Shindig didn't take hold like we thought it would, BUT Safe had a little more impact. Much more so the "Big Damn Heroes" lines. She got a big kick out of that.

She still likes Nathan better as Rick Castle, though.
