Okay, it was suggested that with ALOT of money, perhaps Mal could start establishing his own little 'network'. . .stuff like that. . .(see the 'catalyzers' thread). . .

Here's what I think:

They wouldn't do a whole lot with it. . .just 'more' of what they already do.

Jayne: Probably buy more apples. . .and ALOT of whores. . .and a new gun. . .maybe a special case for Vera.

Book: He'd probably donate it all to some orphanage or refugee fund or somesuch. . .

Kaylee: SIX CRATES OF STRAWBERRIES. 'nuff said.

Wash/Zoe: I bet they'd get that vacation they mentioned in 'Ariel'. OR. . .they'd buy some BABY stuff. *grin* I totally see that happening in the second or third season.

Simon: I bet he'd spend most of it on River. He might get some medical 'bells and whistles' for the infirmary that they don't NEED, but that he'd really love. Maybe he'd spend a few days in a hotel on a core world, living the life he left behind. Maybe he'd invite Kaylee.

River: I think it would depend upon the 'timing'. . .she might be a young lady when she is spending, which would result in some nice new clothing, maybe some personal music, 'teen girl' stuff. . .or it might all be spent on toys. . .or she'd eat it. Who knows?

Mal: There's an old Irish tradition when it comes to sudden good fortune, "Take what you need for yourself, and treat your friends with the rest." Reynolds is an Irish name and Mal strikes me as being the Irish type. I think he would spend what he needed. . .maybe stash some away. . .and the rest would be spent on the number one lady in his life, Serenity. I can TOTALLY see him spending an inordinate ammount of money on a paintjob. Also. . .PARTS. I can see him and Kaylee in the engine room. . .he'd point at a random part, "Need extras?" and Kaylee saying "yes" or "no" as was appropriate.

What are YOUR thoughts on the matter?

As I mentioned on the other thread, the cool thing about this show is that that is a real possibility. I doubt it'll happen; at least, it'll be a few years.

It would be cool, though. They could, like, arm their ship, or something.

I think Mal would spend the money on Serenity. Heck, he might even hire a team of cleaning specialists to come in and spiff her up a bit. Having seen his toilet ... it really, really, really needs some spiffing.

Jayne would send more money to his family and his mother would in return knit everyone hats ... and sweaters to match :)

It's interesting to note that in Jayne's letter from his family, it comes out that he's been sending money home.

I kind of feel that a lot of money in Mal's account would lead to him becoming a leader out on the Rim. I don't know that the idea would not necessarily occur to him, but I feel like events and the influence of his friends and others (read: secret rebel faction) he may have met, would have pushed him toward organizing the citizens on the Rim into a resistance movement.

My reasoning behind this is that I'm fairly certain that Mal is bitter about having lost the war. I'm also sure that he feels he was let down by the Browncoat Command, feeling that they had righteousness on their side and could have won. I mean, how many times do we see Mal have to resist being goaded into a fight by someone taunting him about losing the war? I think he'd be ready and willing to try and set things straight if he had the resources. It might take some pushing from both the Alliance and other factions more closely aligned to Mal's purposes.

Mal is definitely a leader, driven by his principles, and I don't think he'd be satisfied with the life he's currently leading for very long. We see him lament, in "Objects in Space" that, "None of it means a damn thing." I'd wager, that if given a reasonable shot at giving his life some meaning, especially it if meant giving the Alliance the pounding they deserve, he'd jump at the chance.

No power in the 'verse can stop me.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Not really sure. I know how the crew would spend it, and it parallels Statics:

Zoe & Wash: definitely a vacation. Perhaps set aside a nest egg for little Wash or little Zoe.

Jayne: he would send the majority of it home to his mother. Try as he might to act like a hard case, he loves his mom and will make sure she is taken care of first. He might hold back enough for a little vacation of his own w/ some nice ladies of the evening. He might even purchase a couple of more firearms.

Book: Definitely see Book donating his portion to orphans or hospitals on the fringe.

Simon: I am sure he would spend a bit on the infirmary, but I am sure the majority of it would go to research and treatment for River.

River: I don't think money really matters to her. I think she would give it to Simon.

Kaylee: Strawberries, pretty dresses, and perhaps a gift for Simon. She may even set a bit aside as she strikes me as the type to plan a bit for the future.

Mal: I think Mal might go one of two ways. I am sure he would use part of it to fix up any problems w/ Serenity and set some aside for parts and maintenance. I think he might stash some away for a rainy day.

Not sure he would stockpile money and I don't think he would want to set up any sort of group and run it. I think that Mal is more interested in his own freedom and not answering to anyone. I think if he took the reins of a group he would feel fenced in and it would not last long.

The only way I could see Mal leading a group is if the Alliance really screwed up and a new war for independence broke out in the rim.

As far as Book is concerned, keep in mind that he is still a paying passenger, *not* part of the crew. Serenity just hasn't stopped on Boros yet.

That said, I can see Mal stopping on Boros after an argument with the Shepherd, only to have Book hire him for a trip to the Magellanic Cloud or some such...

Or he could reveal (part of) his dark past and...

Mal: spend some on Serenity in the form of gear, repairs, possibly any upgrades that is recommended by Kaylee

Zoe: with Wash, for their potential family; also, a nice vacation

Wash: (see above); also, some more dinos to add to his set

Kaylee: a lot of fresh fruit, especially strawberries; definitely a present for Simon, and some replacements parts/upgrades for Serenity

Jayne: some more weapons, a big meal and the rest goes back home

Book: pay his fare for riding Serenity for the past months, donate the rest

Simon: medical supplies/devices, possibly clothing

River: art supplies and mystery meals

Inara: assuming she had a hand in helping them get this money (i.e. selling the Lassiter) she would most likely put most of it away for her retirement, the rest could possibly be used to buy something for Mal as a token of appreciation

I dunno, I'd bet that taking up arms to rescue Mal from Niska probably earned him a spot on the crew. He also helped defend the Heart of Gold, and acted as pointman when dealing with the Fed in "The Message." I'd say that Book is as much a part of the crew as Simon and River. Inara is the only one I know of who's paying rent.

Keep the Shiny side up

A whole lot of money would come their way right about the time that Simon found a way to greatly improve River's condition. But it would take a whole lot of money. Much discussion and pulling of hair would ensue. Everyone would finally agree, at about the time Kaylee fell ill and needed treatment that would take (you guessed it) a whole lot of money. Simon has to decide.

Ok, first of all, they definitely wouldn't give River any money. And do they cut Simon in on any paydays? As I recall, the deal is that he heals them all in exchange for a relatively secure home for him and River. They would only pay him if he helped with a job, like in Ariel, where he was paid with a trip to the nueral imager.

Not at all sure how shares are divvied up. But if Simon is performing medical services, he gets a cut. Also since he plans jobs from time to time, he gets a cut there as well.

I think it has more to do with how Mal sees his crew. And he sees them, including Simon and Inara as his crew, his responsibility. I think Mal's loyalty would prevent him from stiffing Simon.

Inara is too intent on keeping their relationship business like to be part of the crew. That would make it all the more akward if Mal tried to pay her.

River, well, River is crew, but she's not quite right. So IF she is paid as part of the crew, then I would assume Simon gets her cut.

Book is another odd one. He is obviously crew, and has shown his mettle time and time again. But he's also a shepard and a passenger. So I have no idea.

I think it's just Zoe, Wash, Jayne, Kaylee, and Mal that get money when a job is done. As someone mentioned, Simon's payment for doctering is room & board for two; I'd say that's a fair trade, for both parties. Inara, of course, has to pay Mal for the use of the shuttle, and being ferried from planet to planet.

As for Book, I was always a bit confused about his situation. Does he still pay Mal for food and his room? It's just a small room that he uses; probably wouldn't get much use, even if he wasn't there. Assuming, of course, that there are more than three passenger rooms - which it's generally agreed there are. Book doesn't seem to help with the jobs very often; but I ssume he does stuff around the ship; we know he cooks, for instance. Given the nature of his charactor, I would assume he does things like clean up around the boat, or wash the dishes, or what not. I'm sure he feels he needs to earn his keep.

I doubt he pays, though; he seemed to hardly be able to afford his innitial passage on Serenity.

Okay. . .I'm thinking for the sake of continuity, Book MUST get SOME sort of 'cut' or 'allowance' or something from Mal, because in "War Stories" when Zoe is collecting money from everyone in an attempt to buy back Mal and Wash, Book pulls his wallet out of his pocket, opens it and hands Zoe a wad of cash.

NOW, you say, "Maybe that was the little bit of cash that he mentioned in 'Serenity'"

Well. . .perhaps. But I'm more inclined to believe that the 'fares' were collected up front from everyone. . .probably before Mal returned to the ship from his meeting with Badger in 'Serenity'. . .and Book already said he had a LITTLE cash, and bartered with the fresh fruits and veggies from his garden in the Abbey.

I think that Simon and River get a COLLECTIVE cut. Mal certainly seems like the type that once you're on his crew, you're on his crew, which means you get treated like everyone else. Jayne gets 10%, I'm not sure if Simon and Book would get the same cut, given that they don't jump onto speeding trains and the like, but if it were ME. . .my attitude is, you're crew. . .you do chores (we know Simon and Book do their share of chores), and you get some cash from each job.

Just a thought.

Good. All ery good ideas.

Just one that I have a problem with. Mal would not spend a lot, or any, cash on geting Serenity spiffied up. For one reason I say this: It is still a smugglers ship.

To smuggle or commit acts that one would prefer to have go unnoticed you need a ship that will go unnoticed. That means a chipped paint job, little grime, just enough so that nothing really stands out. Which would you prefer? Firefly that looks her age, nothing really remarkable, or HEY look at the shiny looking ship that reeks of extra cash! Not so much with the incognito.
Same goes for the inside. If they are just a little ol’ transport, just getting by, pay no attention to harmless little fish us-- they will not have a decked out top o’ the line spiffiness.

Gooooooooooood point...

I wish that had occurred to me. . .

It's the exact same reason why I NEVER get busted for speeding, and my roommate always does.

I drive a navy-blue, 1994 Toyota Corrola.

He drives a red 2003 mustang convertible GT.

(incidentally, I make WAY more money than he does. Who's got more sense?)

VERY good point, Vena.

So I guess he'll just blow the whole wad on new suspenders, maybe some fencing lessons, and a boatload of parts so he's never got to send everyone away, get shot, shoot himself up with adrenaline (or was it atropine?) and nearly die from blood loss.

I mean. . .stuff like that is fun ONCE. . .but it gets old.

Hey, my first post! Great site here!

I agree with just about everyone else on what others would spend except Book. I think he'd take the money and disperse it in his travels. Either he'd give it to some needy folks he meets, or he'd buy something with it for needy folks he meets. I think he'd do it more personal than a general donation to an orphanage or hospital or something.

Also, I think he still pays for his fare on the ship. Maybe not, who knows? It's not like he's been very forthcoming with his bio. He may be sitting on quite a bit of wealth, but he shared with Kaylee & the crew what he felt they needed most at the time: real food. I wouldn't be surprised if the money he has is not from any "earnings" on their missions, but just from his stash from the Abbey (and wherever else he may have come from before then )

Scuse the essay, y'all!

One thought occurs to me, tho I don't see any of the crew going for it.

I'd spend a chunk on a pair of really big pistols and give them to River as a present.

Given that twice she has effectively defended the ship (War Stories, OiS) crazy or not, I'd want her on MY side if/when things got rough, cause mortal crisis seems to bring out what I can only call for lack of a better word "a warrior spirit".

Ohmigosh! I would pay very good money to see Mal looking for some new suspenders! Or inquire about fencing lessons.

Also, I think Inara would want a cut of the Lassiter. She does consider herself a business woman. And I think they would give her something anyways if she helped set up the contact. I can totally see her having no qualms about haggling (in a very dignified way) with Mal over setting up the contact, or something.

Heh, I like this question, and I pretty much agree with everyone else's idea: new ship parts, produce, socking it away for a rainy day/emergency, slinky dress for Zoe, etc. And I do hafta go with whoever said there wouldn't be much fixin' up of Serenity's interior/exterior. They might rig an alternate powersource for life support in case a catalyser blows again.

I think there might be some buying of phony IDs, cause you never know when those'll come in handy, and it could be very useful for the Tams to have papers that say they're John and Wendy Darling or some such.

I do suspect that Kaylee would also send some home -- in Out of Gas she talked about how her dad hadn't had much work lately, so I bet the folks could use it.

I'm not entirely certain I agree with the idea that Book would give it all away. He'd probably give some of it away to widows & orphans, but I don't think we honestly know enough about him to say he'd donate all of it.

And please, someone, anyone -- buy River some clothes. She doesn't have that much, and she might appreciate some shoes that weren't big ol combat boots. Also a hairbrush. I know it fits her personality, but some days the tangledyness of her hair of her hair just makes me twitch.
Might also buy Simon some not-so-spiffy clothes while they're at it.
