So who was the genius to schedule a wedding for this weekend? It rained, hailed and occasionally thundered all the way through from Thursday to today, and looks to continue doing so until late next week.

So belly up to the bar, where many a refreshing drink awaits.

Old thread at http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.asp?b=2&t=37842

Okay, I'm just a bit confused on a few things.

1) How old are you?
2) Do you live with your parents or your boyfriend?

I'm sure there are others but I'm too tired to think right now.

You're 20 and you can't drink!?!?! OMG! America sucks. I'm nearly 17 and drink pretty regularly without getting into any trouble. (ps .. nearly 17 .. I CAN DRIVE IN A WEEK! *takes breather* okk calm now (Y)) But yeah, I'm underage, and there's no checkpoints or anything.

Well, except the occasional police officer at college who comes with a breathalyzer and checks for drugs ... xD

In the US legal drinkng age is 21... presumably based on the research that shows your brain hasn't fully developed until age 20 or so and alcohol+undeveloped brain= subtle brain damage and decrease in IQ.

and on that cheery note

Nico.. well at least it was a memorable wedding.

Ah, I think ours is based on the liver not being fully formed until around 18 for men (its sooner for women) and the effects alchol has on the underdeveloped liver.

i'd like to see that research report @_@ 'sides, for me drinking is a moot point cuz i dont like the taste of alcohol XP yuck, so i tend to stay away from it just for that reason.

well, i cant drink *legally* ;) (the drinking age *used* to be 18 way back when, and it still is in Louisiana and Vermont) The only reason they had checkpoints this weekend was cuz it's Spring Weekend for my college, and essentially what Spring Weekend is is a three-day Storrs-wide (Storrs is the town) drunk fest for everyone who goes to UCONN, where everyone on and off campus is having a party. a few years ago they were lighting cars and couches on fire (without the owners permission of course), so it's more policed now, hence checkpoints to ensure people arent driving under the influence. the police blotter the monday after Spring Weekend is quite lengthy. But yeah

"18= stoopid drunk, bad enough when it's >21" is what I recall the debate being back when I was about 12 and the drinking age changed.

Not thinking things through and having bad judgement before you've gotten full(ish) brain development is exacerbated when floating in booze. Drunken driving was another target (used to be a lot of 16- 18 year olds getting smashed and then getting smashed).

Why the heck we didn't just up the driving age.. oh yeah, ability to get around for people not in the city with mass transport.. I remember now. Best you learn to drive well *before* you start boozing.

Then there was the hope of cutting down on all the 14-17 year olds getting trashed.

But I may be remembering this a little fuzzily, as I said I was about 12.

Been weeding more, trying to teach son to ride a bike, sore and tired. Father coming over to grill tonight. Yay grilling weather!

Beer now. Beer now good.

only problem with raising ages or trying to crack down on the under-agers drinking is it aint gonna change anything. underage kids are still gonna get stupid drunk somehow, and upping the driving age wont do much for all of the adults who drive like idiots ><;; least that's my view. my mom couldnt WAIT till i turned sixteen cuz she was getting sick of driving me everywhere :P which is understandable.

http://www.duke.edu/~amwhite/Adolescence/
It has become quite clear over recent years that alcohol impacts both behavior and brain function differently in adolescents and adults (Smith, 2003). For instance, the available evidence suggests that adolescents are more vulnerable than adults to the effects of alcohol on both memory and memory-related brain function.

HUGS Rosie... so is boychild a bike rider now??? Are you sure you want to give him that kind of mobility??? Who knows what kind of schemes he could develop ..

I should have drank more as a teenager, got myself some excuses for how I turned out. My memory is all over the place just now. I can remember things that happened when I was a toddler but not what I had for dinner yesterday or what day it is.

Not bad for a first try, but he keeps letting go of the handlebars and stops pedaling as soon as he starts to tip in one direction or another. His first try had him soloing for about fifteen feet and I thought "GREAT!! He'll have it in no time!"

About an hour later I finally gave up in frustration and out-of breathedness. Perhaps his father will have better luck.

Gotta go check coals for readiness. I was out of lighter fluid and the coals were from last year. After they failed to catch on the first try I got out about a quarter to half cup of Bacardi 151, poured it over, waited a moment, and tossed a match on it. Poof! Problem solved.

I never said you were automatically magically not stupid or irresponsible when you turn 21. I'm just recalling the arguments as I remember them.

So I just got back from a run to the ICU. A friend apparently called 911 this morning because she thought she was having a stroke.

Looks like she was right.

She's early 60s, I think. Special Ed teacher at a high school, musician, dancer, all around lovely person. I've known her for almost 20 years.

The damage was apparently in the area of her brain which controls respiration. We'll see how it goes tomorrow after they read the second scan.

And I have to call and see if they still need me for jury duty on Tuesday, plus we've got a meeting I'd rather not attend but have to on Friday. I'm not going to ask what other unpleasant things can pop up because I know better than to challenge "worse". It's asking for trouble.

So I'll just sit down and nurse a keg, here.

I'm confused because a lot of time you come across as a 15 year old girl.

As for the second question, it's cause you make it seem like you're living with your boyfriend, but then you mention living with your parents.

I just looooooooove being called into work with barely any notice (admittedly, I had 3 hrs warning this time, as opposed to the time I went in at 5 minutes notice). Thankfully, I was able to finish Dresden prior to starting work :) So many thoughts, where to begin?

Select to view spoiler:

Initially I was kinda annoyed that he seems to have kowtowed to the Harry-Elaine/Susan/Murphy shippers who ranted so vocally about Luccio the day that Small Favor was released (although he has now opened the way for a Harry/HK 'shipping), but after a moment's thought, I reminded myself that I'm happy to be along for the ride, and shouldn't be bitching about the driving, given that it is HIS work and characters, not mine.

What else? I miss Morgan, zealot though he was, his exit did bring tears to my eyes.

Slightly surprised that neither Kincaid nor Marcone showed up in this one, but I guess they can't always get involved.

One thing getting the book did remind me, is that my benefactor seems to be even sneakier than normal these days, since there's neither sight nor sound of her here.

WELL THE CARTOON WAS AWESOME TOO!!!!! how long did the comic run? and who did it?

some classmates who've seen it before said it was horrible, and i just tried to stay away from it cuz it looked bad, not them being a secretly gay couple, it just looked like a movie i wouldn't enjoy, so i stayed away from it. (i tend to avoid movies i dont think i'll like so i'll be able to avoid griping about them later)

managed to sit through most of the class period with it today, though i was reading. just from listening to what was going on i was like 'my god this is boring, and im not even really paying attention.' Heath's voice was annoying too ><;; too roughed up, kind of like what some people thought of christian bale's voice in Dark Knight.
