Some of you may have heard the hilarious news. I thought this would be a good time to weigh in. to answer some obvious questions: No, we had no idea this was coming. Yes, we will finish out the season. No, I don't think the WB is doing the right thing. Yes, I'm grateful they did it early enough for my people to find other jobs.

Yes, my heart is breaking.

When Buffy ended, I was tapped out and ready to send it off. When Firefly got the axe, I went into a state of denial so huge it may very well cause a movie. But Angel... we really were starting to feel like we were on top, hitting our stride -- and then we strode right into the Pit of Snakes 'n' Lava. I'm so into these characters, these actors, the situations we're building... you wanna know how I feel? Watch the first act of "The Body."

As far as TV movies or whatever, I'm not thinking that far ahead. I actually hope my actors and writers are all too busy. We always planned this season finale to be a great capper to the season and the show in general. (And a great platform for a new season, of course.) We'll proceed ahead as planned.

I've never made mainstream TV very well. I like surprises, and TV isn't about surprises, unless the surprise is who gets voted off of something. I've been lucky to sneak this strange, strange show over the airwaves for as long as I have. I don't FEEL lucky, but I understand that I am.

Thanks all for your support, your community, and your perfectly sane devotion. It's meant a lot. I regret nothing (except the string of grisley murders in the 80's -- what was THAT all about?) Remember the words of the poet:

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the road less traveled by and they CANCELLED MY FRIKKIN' SHOW. I totally shoulda took the road that had all those people on it. Damn."

See you soon.

Where did this come from?

At least Joss will have more time to devote to the Firefly resurrection.

Thanks for posting this. You know, its really odd how I just read the post on AICN and closed the window. I figure I was at least half-expecting it, and it read almost like news I already knew. Or perhaps I'm just conditioned to the fact that good TV gets cancelled, because Paris and Nicole is cheaper TV by the hour.

I'm going to miss the show when it goes, but by all accounts it will be leaving on a high. I've invested time (and money) in watching the show, but its the people who brought the show out that are now having to work out what they are doing next year.

For us its a TV show that entertains for an hour, in most cases stays for longer, but for them that's the food on the table. Given the quality in front of and behind the camera, hopefully everyone will find something soon enough.

Well, that officially takes my list of SF/Fantasy shows that I watch down to zero I think. How'd that happen?

And when the heck did I get so reflective?

Hopefully he'll shop it to other networks before giving up on it- UPN is hurting pretty bad for quality shows right now, what with Enterprise sucking and all. They'd be fools to pass up a Whedon show with a built in audience (hell, right now we've got nowhere else to go for our fix). Of course, they ARE fools, which they proved when they passed on Firefly...

Can they afford this show, though? (Likewise, could they have afforded 'Firefly')?

Not being a watcher of angel, I wouldn't know generally what it's cost is, but the likely answer is no.

And it was a definite no for them being able to affoard firefly, due to a combination of the rights seccurities and the actualy budget needed to film the show.

UPN Is getting more and more backwatter, don't turn to them to support major entertainment.

On the other hand, give the scifi network a couple more years of big growth (unless it's just my immagination that they're taking on more and more big production shows) and it could turn out to be a really good place to air programming of this callibre.

Angel can't be nearly as expensive as Firefly, which I think I remember hearing cost around $2 million per episode. There's demon makeup and magic special effects, but no spaceships. And UPN picked up Buffy's last two seasons, so maybe they'll do the same for Angel.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Sad news indeed. Makes me glad I don't get the WB.

I never really thought much about Angel, especially since I do not get the WB network, at least I didn't until Buffy ended. When Buffy was over I missed the show, and wished then I had the WB to check out Angel. Unfortunately my cable company does not offer WB. So along comes TNT and they begin showing Angel from the first episode. The show comes on at 5pm EST right after I am getting in from work.

I was hooked. I have not missed an episode, and was really getting involved w/ the characters and plotline.

Now this news. How can TV network execs be so blind to such great shows?!?

I suppose in the long run, at least Angel got the time it did on the air. I wish the best of luck to the cast and crew. They will be missed.

I disagree very strongly. One of the aspects of all three shows that I loved very much was it was NOT the same ole, same ole. Joss has consistently surprised me, entertained me, and in my purely unbiased opinion, made some of the greatest television, ever.

It was broadcast, it was mainstream. And it was very very well done, not just in the writing, but in the execution and production.

So with all due respect Mr. Whedon, you are simply wrong on this point.

I could not agree more Drakon.

Joss has given me not one, not two, but three series that I have grown to love and follow closely for more than seven years. That is more than can be said for any TV program ever. I have never liked a TV show so much that I had to own it on DVD, every season, and I felt compelled to go to the internet to share that enjoyment w/ others of like mind.

I feel terrible that Angel has been cancelled, but I feel worse for Joss and the cast. I know this must really hit Joss hard, especially since he is working so hard to get Firefly on the big screen, but I am sure he will bounce back. I can only hope all the actors are able to find work that will further their careers and get them back on our sets for us to enjoy.

Y'know the official notice on the WB site, pays lavish compliments to DB ("finest, classiest, friendliest actors we've had the pleasure to work with") and I just wonder why he's singled out in that way. Makes me all suspicious and stuff that they're recruiting him for another show right away. Did it strike anyone else as odd? And not really anything about JW (the ... uh .. creator of DB's character). Also (and I think this was mentioned elsewhere) nothing about WHY it was being axed.
