BRINGITBACK

This may have been discussed before but I thought I would bring it up anyway..

Did Badger team up with Dobson to set up the Serenity crew in `Those left behind' or was he an un-willing pawn?

There was never a ``That ruttin' badger...'' mention from anyone during the comic after the trap was sprung and after some of Mal's dealings with the bloke in the series, you have to wonder if he did decide he wanted Mal out of the picture

Thoughts?

I haven't read any of the comic books, so I can't hazard a guess on this topic.

I never thought about it that way. It is possible they were set up but I dont really think so. While obviously Badger dislikes Mal, he seems to be one of the top choices when doing a job.

Perhaps Badger didnt know what was going to happen, and did the whole "anonomys buyer" thing...you know, pay for the job, Mal was mentioned by name...

I dunno. thats just a guess

Zoë: Sir, we don't want to deal with Patience again.
Mal: Why not?
Zoë: She shot you.
Mal: Well, yeah, she did a bit.

I dunno, there seems to have been more hostility than usual between Badger and the crew when he pitched Sturges to them. Remember, Badger hired Ott and his crew to go after the same take at Constance, likely because he wanted to teach Mal and Co a lesson about respecting him. And Mal reacted to THAT by pretty much abducting Badger at gunpoint, threatening to beat the ever-loving weasel slime outta him, and dropping him off in the middle of NOWHERE to hike back to the Eavesdown Docks.

Could Constance have just been an attempt to kill Mal, and when that failed Badger found another plot that Mal was desperate enough for money to go for? I certainly don't think it's impossible.

No way. Badger sent them into the trap, that is obvious. Dobson set it up. The question posed was whether Badger was actively involved with Dobson, or being manipulated/extorted by Dobson.

Note that BDH eradicated every one of Badger's goons this time, not just a few.

Also some question as to how is Badger here where Serenity is. They are not really on Persephone, are they? It is not specified, and Persephone in White Sun System is not "on the way" from Constance in Kalidasa System to Haven/Training House in Blue Sun System. (according to Map of the Verse) So, did Badger go far out of his way to find Mal, and send him to the trap?

good point, both of you. had'nt thought about that. It fits with the fact that in the BDM they were working with fanty and mingo and we dont hear really about badger other than death.

im going to go back, re-watch the series, re-read the series, re-watch the BDM and brush up. i'm getting rusty in my old age. lol

In our virtual series over at www.stillflying.net, we took the direction that Badger definitely and knowingly betrayed Mal, and, further, that it was one in a series of escalating betrayals as the relationship between Mal and Badger deteriorates (culminating in Badger allying himself with an increasingly-unstable Atherton Wing, who plans to rape Inara and kill Mal).

From a storytelling angle, it makes sense to drive a big wedge between Mal and Badger, both as set-up for Mal seeking new employment with Mingo & Fanty, and also because if Badger ISN'T on good terms with the crew, there's the slightest chance that he survived the Operative's "Order 66" purge.

www.stillflying.net: "Here's how it might have been..."
