I believe that in 100 years, Joss Whedon's body of work will be a prereq for anyone studying for a degree in performing arts.

There will be hundreds of students turned away every semester due to lack of chairs.

"Not so much." "Rolling in puppies." "Daddy's not finished talking."

Each of these teensy sentences will be the subject of dissertations and thesis papers. Heck, I might get that organ replacement surgery just so I can hang around long enough to take a class in "Give 'em the wiggins."

"Just keep walkin, preacher man."

Why wait a hundred years? We could start now!

I can see no reason why it couldn't be - Joss' belief that you can use a sci-fi / fantasy dynamic to highlight different aspects of the human condition is, if not wholely original, very refreshingly done and unique in scope.

If nothing else "The Body" from Buffy and "Objects In Space" are very very very much works of art in the highest sense of the word.
