BLACKOUTNIGHTS

Ya know, there's been a lot of really good stories that develop a fan base and then, because of their popularity have their stories expanded and/or changed by people other than the original writer(s).

I find that the result, more often than not, generally sucks.

Take, for example, Highlander, which originally was the story of Immortals who battle it out with the grand prize ultimately being mortality. That's all that needed to be written. I don't need to know why they're immortal. If nothing else had ever been written or filmed about it, that would've been fine by me. However, because of its popularity and the chance to make a dollar, we get a never-ending sequence of garbage.

Or how about Terminator? I won't go on and on about that.

Considering all of that, I think I'd much rather have Firefly left as it is now rather than risking mudding the story up. It'd be cool to have more of their adventures, but at least with Serenity there's a semi-sense of finality.

I think it's better when writers create their own stories rather than wading into other waters. Even the new Star Trek, while loads of fun, is like...well, here we go again. CHA-CHING!

I suppose it's much less risky to produce a known franchise than launch something new. But Gawd, it's so cool finding something new that's really good where the fan base is small. I don't know why it is that as fan-bases grow, the creation kindof loses its charm. When you can go to a convention one year, and speak with an actor, writer or artist from a little-known new series you enjoy one-on-one, and the next year a LOT more people like it and there's a 10-mile long line and you decide to go get a bite to eat rather than stand in line.

I remember going to conventions when I was a teenager when there were like, oh, maybe a couple of hundred guests who attended. Now, it's like hundreds of thousands, and while there are some things that are kinda cool about it, I miss a lot of the charm that came with it when it was less popular.

But I guess I'm rambling. Does anybody even know what I'm talking about?

yes, it's called greed.... just ask those poor saps who invested with Barney (150 years in the pen) Madoff - they're singing the blues too... all because of greed....

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I'll agree with everything...except...I want more Firefly, but only if Joss is in charge. It might not ever be able to regain the spark of brilliance it had for that very brief time, but I'm willing to risk it.

I very frequently daydream about living in the alternate universe in which Firefly survived and the fans are bitching about who Joss killed off in Season Seven.

Left alone, as it is now, FIREFLY is a work to remember and emulate. (All the usual good points here)

To have more FIREFLY is our dream, to have the same qualities (cited above) would make great watching. But only if The Whedon has creative control. ALong with Minear to run the writing. It would be fantastic!

But what if we get a Firefly by others with other actors? Hard to say. Some shows have done well, others not so good. I'm willing to take the risk if Hollywoodville would. At Universal as F*x still has no clue.

We'll see.

Quality doesn't sell in Hollywood or the boardrooms. "Mind tricks don'[t work on me, Only money."

But the producers and execs really should give it a chance. Other sequels, when done well, have been moneymakers. FIREFLY can do it for them too.

This may be why we have "Dollhouse". It is Joss with his own brand of imagination. Does it matter how that imagination is used. We wanted more "Firefly" because it is such a fine show. We now have Dollhouse. Is this more fitting then "Firefly the next Generation". I enjoyed "Dollhouse" and I am pleased that it will have another season.

Yeah, I'm glad Dollhouse will be returning also. The ethical questions it poses are quite interesting.

Hello BlackoutNights:

I was already enjoying Dollhouse when they did the episode of Topher programing Sierra as a playmate to play with and eat junk food on what I believe was his birthday. I can only imagine it was his birthday because of the twinkie with candles on it.

I know they erase the program and all the memories when the Dolls have finished an assignment, but can't help but feel they keep some residual effect of the event remains in their minds. So Sierra will have some desire to play computer games and play light tag when she is finally released from service. Well that is for Joss to know and us to find out.

Dollhouse, sir, is no Firefly.

'Course, it's no CSI: MIAMI, either...

Dollhouse no doubt had its moments, and in its 2nd season I'm sure it will have many more (and hopefully more consistently)...so it's not that I'm being willfully ungrateful...I would still rather see Joss's 17-jewel imagination turned toward cranking out more of that cosmic western...

You say that now, but what if you get more Firefly and it comes out like Highlander 2?

Incidentally, Highlander 2 had the shortest review of a film I ever read. "No."

Besides FOX not showing any signs of bringing back "Firefly", the cast and crew have moved on. If it were possible to bring back "Firefly" with all the original people, I would a very happy person. But this does not look like anything that is going to happen any time soon. Now "Dollhouse" from Joss Whedon is here and now and I intend to enjoy it.

I hear what is being said and agree with a lot of it. Firefly is show that can easily be passed over after only seeing it once. Now I’m not saying that anyone seeing the tv series for the first time wouldn’t enjoy it ( I have many co-worker friends that have seen it and really like it) But it’s genius really didn’t sink in to me until I’d watched it twice or more. It’s like eating something that’s really good. At first you may think it’s really good because you’re hungry…..then after about that tenth bite the light comes on and you realize “ Gorram this is really good!”

So has been with Firefly with me. I am a fan through and through. Each time I watch it I catch things I didn’t see before.

Firefly is ART. It will continue the amaze people for years to come. They will wonder why they’ve never heard of it before and why there aren’t more episodes. Truth is big tv companies aren’t concerned with ART. They are concerned with the all mighty dollar. We only have Joss, Tim and people like them that are concerned with putting out what they hope to be is the best ART they can create.

In answer to your question, YES I would love to have more FIREFLY. Would it be as good as the original? Well with the same cast and crew I would love to give them a try. It may not be as good. There was a magic to that time of FIREFLY that might not be able to be recaptured……but then again maybe it can. A mini series could tell us if it could be possible. I do believe it would be received with success if properly advertised and a whole new era of FF could resume. That may be wishful dreaming…..but Hey it could happen!

Any television network takers?
