Maybe someday a Firefly will take leave of the Alliance system and go to another system. Remember how Mal said something like if the Alliance gets closer, we'll just go a little further.

How do I know a Firefly can go from Earth that was to another star system.

Shadow puppets in Heart of Gold. Ships are shown leaving Earth that was. And there is a shadow puppet of a Firefly ship.

Also in Our Mrs. Reynolds, the bad guys talked about with a okay mechanic, a Firefly could run forever and forever is how long it would take to get from Earth that was to another star system.

We sniff the air, we don't kiss the dirt.

Joss said none of the ships in the Firefly verse have faster than light travel, so it would take MANY MANY MANY years. If I remember correctly, the ships that left Earth That Was were generational--it took several generations to get there.

Yes. Good thing a Firefly could run like forever.

Sounds like a spin-off idea, don't you think? A new gang that inherited the very Serenity that our beloved crew once inhabited?

Almost makes me wonder if the show--had it run seven seasons--might have ended with Serenity reaching Earth-That-Was by interia, with the whole crew long dead and gone... except River, who survived in her box from the pilot (because, hey, I bet the crew saved it!)

She'd have found a nuked planet littered w/ rusted remains of centurion soldiers , aka toasters.

Well if you saw the end of BSG, you'd know that couldn't happen... unless she could go back in time.

River and Simon and Kaylee were able to build several more cryo boxes. Not enough. Some of the crew had to bunk up with other crew... Zoe and the baby...Mal and Inara...Kaylee and Simon...River had her same old box...River planned it that way...Jayne with Mr. Universes's ex-wife. Cause you know he kept her. River made the box so she was connected directly to Serenity's systems and could get out without having to wake Jayne and do what was necessary.

I'd always kind of thought there wouldn't be much point in going back to Earth, but if the Earth were recovered and if people really were gone from the Earth, it WOULD be a pretty way to end the series. In four centuries, I guess it's probably possible.

According to what I've read, it took 120 years for the Arcs to travel from Earth to the new system.

Fireflies weren't invented until 2464, so they weren't technically around at the time of Exodus, so their inclusion in the shadow puppet play was probably just an Easter Egg for the canny viewer to catch... And possibly the performers needed some extra ship puppets. However, I suppose that doesn't necessarily mean a firefly couldn't go that far.

It would be a very sad trip though, because since the Arcs were crewed, one or two people would have to volunteer to stay awake and die of old age making sure Serenity didn't break down or go off course before they got there.

Since life expectancy is expected to reach 150 years at some point, maybe a single person could do it. And I think we all know who that would be.

Huh. Actually, that one didn't occur to me, that would be much less sad. Though I wonder how well the robot could be program to care for Serenity and whether it could remain functional, we're not talking a sophisticated AI here.

What I was thinking was that the captain would be the one to sacrifice his life for his crew. Firefly and Serenity ends when Mal dies.

We don't really know much about the computer that is Serenity. In Heart of Gold, Kaylee says she'll talk to Serenity and try and update the Heart of Gold waterworks. In Bushwacked, Mal tells Wash to have Serenity knock for us. We know it has sensors that activate voice messages for out of oxygen and such.

Maybe Kaylee and River could upgrade the robot and the ship's computer, so they could handle stuff. Also the robot could wake Crew when necessary and then put them back to sleep like on Alien.

CYBERSNARK

Actually, you wouldn't need a full-time pilot.

Assuming you can identify Sol in the starscape, I'm sure River could work as a human navicomputer and map the course Serenity would need to take (accounting for lightspeed lag, stellar drift, gravity, and gravitational shear [from the galaxy's spin]). It's just a matter of doing math, and we know River's good for it.

They'd only need to make it to the Oort Cloud before you could start waking the crew (Serenity seems able to transit from one end of the 'verse [Miranda] to the other [Londinium] within a few weeks, so they should be able to drop in-system from Plutospace quick enough to not need the pods). Make a few braking orbits around whatever planets are available to drop down from interstellar speed, and you'll be in Earth orbit.

Just crosswire one or more of the cryo-pods into the sensors to automatically wake someone up if something trips the proximity detector (just in case there's someone else out here). Maybe even set a regular schedule (wake up for a few hours every year or so just to check progress).

We applied the cortical electrodes but were unable to get a neural reaction from either patient.

Except... Dust and dozens of other microimpacts could easily throw the ship off course, or damage important components.

According to the Serenity RPG manual, Serenity's computers are very rudimentary. Proximity sensors, a nav computer, life support sensors. By the time someone wakes up from the cyrochambers, which is SUPPOSED to be a long process involving a series of injections, they were lucky they didn't KILL River, it could be too late.
