Sacrifice Angel in exchange for Firefly movie?

Just caught this on Sci-fi Wire:

"Joss' response to that offer was, 'Who's going to make (an Angel movie) for you?' Because he's going to be off doing a motion picture, Firefly, and he'll be consumed with that for some time.

I don't think Angel is being "sacrificed" for Firefly. Joss has a full plate what w/ having to write not one but two scripts for the film, trying to convince Universal to fun the film, getting his cast back together after more than a year off the set, and his now writing X-Men.

If you remember, Angel was cancelled by WB which came as a shock to Joss and ME. An Angel movie is just more than Joss can juggle right now. The man can only be stretched in so many directions at once.

I think my point is that perhaps the loss of Angel is to the benefit of Firefly... with Joss not focused on trying to keep Angel on the air, he can spend more time dealing with the Firefly movie. Fan campaigns and high hopes notwithstanding, even the Powers That Be have admitted that the chances of Angel's resurrection are slim at best. I'd even go so far as to suggest that there may be a little relief that the decision to hasten Angel's demise is out of ME's hands entirely - perhaps I've been reading incorrectly beween the lines a little, but there seems to be a note of defeatism in some of the statements coming out of the PTB camp, that they've already accepted the inevitable and are prepared to move on to something else. After all, it's been said that the cast and crew were grateful that they've been given time to finish off the series properly and find new projects for next season... that doesn't sound like a cry of "Never Give Up, Never Surrender" to me...

Tell me I'm wrong... tell me that Angel isn't being sent quietly into that good night... tell me that the PTB are raging against the dying of the light... Personally speaking, I want both Angel and Firefly; I'm just troubled that my choice will be one or the other, not both...

I agree that there doesn't seem to be as much of an uproar over the cancellation of Angel as there was over Firefly, but they are really two different situations.

Angel got a good run, a longer run than some thought it would get. It dodged the cancellation bullet at least once, and they have DVD sets. Firefly did not even run a full season. Fox played the "hiatus" game for months, only to finally cancel it. Angel got years to tell it's story, Firefly had barely begun. Firefly seems to have been very special to Joss, and he is not done with it.

I will miss Angel too, especially since James Marsters joined the cast. Spike is my favorite character from Buffy, and it was great to see Joss "resurrect" him for Angel. Too bad it will only be the one season.

If it comes down to it, I will choose Firefly over Angel. I have had the opportunity to enjoy Angel for years, something I can not say for Firefly. I want more Firefly and if it means I must say goodbye to Angel I can do that, though I don't think that is necessarily what is going on here.

Yes, giving up Angel will be hard. I’ve only gotten to know the series fairly well this season and I fell in love (oh yeah! James Marsters on the cast did not hurt at all)

I think it would be better this way. Nearly none of us want to see a good series go, but the fact remains that they will be ending it on a high note. They have had a good long run and we won’t be forced to see the series wither and die a slow, painful, ugly, pointless death.

Well said.

I, too, will miss Angel, and I think that there are still many, many great stories to tell. And some of the "buddy" stuff between Spike and Angel was nothing short of brilliant... After the fight in the "Smile Time" episode, I felt that they could've used a lot more of that verbal sparring dialog.

Anyone else notice the muted sorrow coming from the ME camp over the clipping of Angel's wings? Maybe they've got a secret... of course, don't seem likely they'd tell 'em to us now, do it? But, methinks, to be perfectly honest, I'd prefer if ME dumped the whole TV circus entirely and simply figured out a way to produce the episodes (perhaps a 13-ep season at a time) directly for DVD release. Think that kind of scenario is possible as a backup plan? Here's hoping...

I liked the interaction between Spike and Angel too. I think James Marsters is adding that extra chemistry the cast needed to get the ratings up.

I am sure that ME is tied in knots over Angel being cancelled. I would like to think that they would at least pitch the show to other networks to see if they can get it picked up, but there has been no word on if they will pursue that course or not.
