Hey everyone -

I'm hosting my first ever Firefly marathon next weekend. All 14 episodes in one day!

Any ideas for the day? I'll take any suggestions, but I'm mostly stuck on food - I want to serve things that are Firefly-friendly. Other than strawberries, any ideas?

Thank you!

I've heard people suggest bao (i think that's how it is spelled) but I haven't been able to find it in stores.

Bao is pretty much a steamed bun stuffed with some kind of filling. I tend to eat the pork kind, but there's quite a few kinds. I get them at the Chinese bakery.

Potstickers are easy to find, cook and eat. Trader Joes has some good ones, chicken and veggie being my favorite. Pick up a bottle of their Sweet Chili Sauce for something to dip them in (soy sauce is a another great alternative).

A big cooker of white rice.

Stir fry?

And for dessert? Ice Planets!

Kingelbert, will you stop hijacking peoples' perfectly decent threads with your innane dribbling. You are making a total arse of yourself. Now bugger off and find a mirror to talk to,because that is the only thing that will take any notice of you.Perhaps you could remember that there may be some young ladies on this forum that really find your self indulgent sexual innuendo offensive and irritating. You have absolutely nothing constructive to say on any matter. So just stop.

Make a cake with five large candles on it to match Simon's birthday cake. Most of the food consumed seemed dehydrated or canned. Taco chips and salsa is always good. Have mild to very hot salsa to appease all tastes.

I also forgot to add tea for one of the beverage options and something highly alcoholic that you can serve in coffee mugs and call Mudders Milk.

If you're hosting people over 21 I'd suggest (besides Mudder's Milk) Firefly sweet tea vodka.

Looks like something that Kaylee would brew up.

Also anything Chinese. Bao is wonderful if you can find it (try your local Asian market. If they don't have it fresh, they surely will have it frozen and ready to cook..

Chocolate of course, both the cake and melted for the strawberries.

I fear to much similarity to Fierfly foods, because they mostly ate recycled protien, in its varius forms (meaning shspes). They seemed to mention that none of it was too tasty, so I would not want to subject guests to highly bland fare.

Firefly would be party enough, in my book - have fun, enjoyable foods, lotsa popcorn (like in a theater), nachos, crackers & dips. Sorry if that's not what you had in mind.

Maybe stress dress, more. If they are newbs, try having prizes for correct answers/quizzes of each show.

Fanty and Mingo will provide the drinks for only forty percent, precious.

River will provide the entertainment but do remember to stay clear.

Wish I was there.

Something that is always a hit is Apple Slices with a Carmel Dipping Sauce. I usually buy mine at Krogers, pre-made in a handy round tray. It's easy to do yourself, too.

-Grenades cost extra.

Hi StarshineJ! I've given some thought to this myself as the 'versary of our BDM is fast approaching on Sept 30th.
I had myself a shidig last year with some sticky rice and gobs of potstickers which were purchased for about 10$ for around 60 of em at Sam's club. (similar to as Costco) It worked out fine but this year I want some more variety and cannon with the show.
I'm thinkin bao and potstickers are a good start but whenever I think of the crew really enjoying eating I think back to the pilot episode where they're all enjoying Shepherd Book's fresh garden fare. The Captain enjoying his big ol slice of tomatoe with chopsticks shows that they didn't have to get fancy and were enjoying simple, fresh, veggies so I might try to re-create some of that. The fact that my garden has just started overflowin' will certainly help there!

I also stumbled across this serenity cook book at the old movie site: http://www.serenitymovie.com/cookbook.pdf
other than their non-alcoholic (hence completely blasphemous) rendition of mudder's milk it's got some pretty interestin recipes. (the mystery meal sounds fun!)

-Mal, your dead arm buddy's on the bridge!
-He ain't dead.
-Oh.

Well, sorta mentioned above, I think you could have apples. You could put some kind of grenade pin in the tops of them, to simulate the concept - or maybe just a few pins hanging loose on the apple basket. Could just use a hitch pin retaining pin, with ring on the end, available at farm equipment stores (I like Farm&Fleet, if you have those around).
Does anybody really know what a Grizwold looks like?

Or, likely cheaper, get a wad of cotter pins, and run simple key rings through the end of each of them.
I suppose everybody should have a knife to carve up their apples. But then, peanut butter on apple slices is yummy as well, beyond the above mentioned caramel.

I forgot, what was all those things Saffron cooked for Mal? The home-cooking stuff? The quaint stuff?

And Badger served cucumber sandwiches to Mal and Jayne, right?
The Triumph Settlement seemed to be serving real food to the crew on the night of celebration. Don't recall what.
Seemed to also be real food in Serenity at Haven Mining Camp.
Of course strawberries.
What is in Wife Soup?
What kind of berries did River pick in Safe?

Hodgeberries. Whatever those are. ????

A word of caution about that towering chocolatey birthday cake that Kaylee made for Simon. I made one myself once, complete w/ emergency candles on top. Thing is they don't show anyone cutting the cake on the show and for good reason. Once you cut into it & remove a piece, the whole rest of the cake will collapse. It is structurally unsound.
Looked really cool before we cut it though.

Oh, don't forget your "some kind of hot cheese". I like to melt some with a little beer & hot sauce mixed in. Good stuff.
