You hear that guy, "what if firefly bombs", then whats the purpose of making any movie, honestly i love Buffy and Angel but together the have what 246 episodes between them to firefly's 14!!!!!!

And i think firefly would make a better movie then and Buffy angel crossover, not that an angel/buffy would suck i think it would rock.....but anyway the point is that man should go to a special hell.....

I don't know, but I am just wondering aloud now.

Do we have proof that the "Serenity" coming soon on the Universal website and the serenitymovie.com is indeed a movie about Firefly?

I mean, Serenity could be the name of a movie with Diane Keaton and Sissy Spacek in it, for heaven's sake. Not even the word Firefly for the title of a movie, by itself, might inspire me to think of *this* Firefly.

I choose to be optimistic about it - no reason to look for trouble when it always seems to find me anyway LOL. Anyway, it's OUR job to see that it does well, yes? Let's send that guy a copy of Dante's Inferno, just in case he needs a road map.

Let me check on something real fast....
I enjoyed LOTR:ROTK so much I have already seen it six times at the theater... Okay, I LOVE Firefly, so that means at least double that, multiplied by the number of fans on this site alone watching it multiple times, because waiting for DVD SUCKS, and if this flops at the box office (and make no mistake, I've seen enough bad movies that it's no coincidence the initials for it are B.O.), There will be no sequel, and most assuredly no series resurrection. We just got to FORCE ourselves to see it more than once, I know it's a sacrifice (editor's note:sarcasm is hard to emote while typing, please read first half this sentence with this in regard), but ain't we just big damn heroes to do it.

You look better in red.

The "what if it sucks?" argument is really lame. Any movie can have a really great premise and suck. Believe me, they truly can.

I also agree with Jasonzzz that this could be a premature assumption on our part. Yes, there are lots of articles floating about on the net, but they all got their info from optimistic fan sites and NOT from the studio. It would be terrific if the title Serenity referred to a Firefly movie, but I am ready for the possibility that it's something else.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Jason could well be right in the arguement that we are presumptuous that "Serenity" is actually the Firefly movie. Of course if it is not the Firefly movie, it is on heck of a coincidence. Universal owns the rights. TPtB have said that a 2nd script was written, and things were rolling toward production. TPtB have said the tentative title for the movie is "Serenity". Seems like a logical conclusion that the "Serenity" on Universal's website is our Serenity.

I don't doubt the movie will be successful. What they do not make in ticket revenues, they will more than make up for in VHS & DVD sales and rentals. Just look at how well the DVDs are selling, and more fans log on here or the official site everyday. These new fans tell us how much they like Firefly and how they are shocked it was cancelled. Couple that with all the efforts by the fanbase to introduce the show to new people, I am confident the movie will be a success and the show will return to network TV.

So, by 'sucking', it could mean a couple of things. But basically, no one went to see it. It could be mispromoted, mismarketed, lacking (somehow) in universal appeal, opening in the wrong market, wrong tie-ins. I am not sure what else. But what can be in 'our' control to influence.

The question I always ask is "What can I do?". If it's something I have no influence over, then it's just a lot of handwringing. I am not going to get an ulcer over things I have no control over.

I wondered about that too. What I came up w/ was pretty much what we did w/ the DVD set:

- blanket the boards w/ the release date for the movie

- promote by word of mouth to anyone that will listen

- put up fliers in the windows of book stores, movie rental places, movie theatres, and anywhere else we can to get the word out

- sponsor drives to promote the movie

- call local radio & TV stations to see if they will plug the movie

- get articles about the show, cancellation by Fox, the DVD set and now movie in local papers to generate interest

- point people to the link at Universal for information

- continue to convert as many people as we can w/ the DVD sets until the movies release to get more fans into the fanbase.

here's the thing... we had the tv series.. it got cancelled.. that sucked.. we shopped it around.. no one picked it up... we have the dvd's.. that's cool.. but it ain't new firefly.. now we have a movie.. if no one but myself sees it, it will be worth it.. if it totally bombs, and there are no more movies, no more shows after the movies, whatever..

I will still be pretty gorram happy that i got to see my crew one last damn time.. and it was on our damn terms.

I dont think it will bomb... but... "what if it does" just means that it bombed by popular opinion.

Can you think of any movie someone told you sucked, and you didnt go see it, then you rented it and said "AW, huh choo-shang tza-jiao duh tzang-huo! That lying bastard lied to me! That was a great movie!"?

I can.

But I dont think this movie will suck. If its a farewell to all us Browncoats, so be it. If its a spring-board to bringing it back to TV on some channel other than luh-suh FOX (spit!), so be it. If it is hacked to bits by Universal to where it sucks total ass, so be it. I will buy it on DVD, and whatever the case, I shall place it next to the series as a reminder of what happens when good shows get screwed.

Just a side note... the dude who wrote the article said something about a Buffy movie. Uh, wasnt there already one? I think I remember some cute blondie Christy Somebody jumping across the screen with Donald Sutherland and Pee Wee Herman.

I have a huge pack of girl friends. They trust me to put together a chick flick night every couple of months. They have done this since I was first put in charge of chick flick planning and chose "Gladiator".
I can hear you muttering, "Gladiator? A chick flick?
HELL YEA! It's got gorgeous, muscular men getting all sweaty and swordfighting. The lead female wasn't just a pretty bracelet on some man's arm, she had brains of her own.
My girlies will trust me and on opening night, 20 of us will be elbowing each other out of the nachos and staring at 'Cap'n Tight Pants'.

My point? We will fill those theatres to capacity and keep on filling them until the boneheads at Fox are executed in their parking lot for letting such a gem die an early death.

I know that JW has fought tooth and nail to maintain creative control, so I'm pretty sure the movie will do great. (Side note. . .that "Hollywood does Firefly" thing scared me and made my fiancee cry)

The thing that I am personally trying to prepare myself for is the damn marketing. . .

Firefly Doritos
Firefly Coke products
Firefly Playstation game (if it's NOT a well-thought-out multi character RP, but rather a two-dimentional, side-scrolling thing where you control Mal or Jayne shooting alliance feds or reavers)

Firefly Soundtrack (ABOUT GORRAMN TIME!!!)
Firefly "Limited Edition Collector's Movie Mags (gimme a ruttin' break)

Firefly halloween costumes (I'm sorry. . .Zoe's cool vest done in cheap vinyl, or Inara's gowns in that cheap nylon satin stuff just pisses me off.)

Toy "Light and sound" versions of Vera, Mal's pistol, Zoe's rifle. . .

And to top it all off. . .

THE FIREFLY HAPPY MEAL. Unless the toy that week is the "Jayne" action figure, in which case it's the Firefly UNhappy meal.

>>"what if firefly bombs"<<

It can't.

There's too many of us, who'll storm the theatres and pack em, and Universal, unlike fux nutworx, are NOT morons - they full and well know this, and if they didn't, Joss told em.

For Universal it's win-win, such guarantees are extremely rare (save for sequels, which is why hollywood milks em) and thus, treasured.

As they stand to make a damned good bit of money off of this, and if they "pull it off supremo" stand to make a whole lot more - off a guaranteed, rabidly-loyal fan base with sufficient disposable income to make the DVD set an Amazon best seller...

NO way is Universal dumb enough to screw this up, and if they're really slick, they might well enlist us existing browncoats as extra PR for the movie..
(Having seen one post, it seems they might not even need to ask us, heh)

You can damn well bet some of those guys are positively drooooling over the mountains of income they plan to rake in from merch deals on action figures, t-shirts and the like..

You hear that Universal ? you make some replica "browncoat" jackets for us, and we'll buy the damned things OUT.

Win-Win, we get our movie/show... you get your money.

Do the job... get paid.

Make us proud,

LOL!

I posted something very similar to this myself over at the official board Static. You left out a few items:

- collectible card game
- action figures
- models of Serenity, Alliance ship & Reaver ship
- fuzzy slippers that look like Serenity
- novel adaptation of the movie
- "Making of Serenity" collectible paperback
- official Firefly decoder ring
- Firefly cereal
- Firefly sunglasses (Mal & Zoe will wear them in the movie)
- Firefly gag mustaches
- Blooper reel from the movie
- bath towels
- dinner plates
- Firefly lunchbox
- PS2 game
- Firefly boardgame
- Dr Simon medical kit

As far as the movie goes, like Knibblet, I will be taking everyone I can get to go to the theatre w/ me. Like Shssay, I will be there every night to send my money to Universal, Joss, and the cast to show my appreciation for the movie.

??

The movie...was good. It broke Titanic's box office records, you know.

Return of the King, though - LOOOONGEST ending in history. That ring was destroyed, and all evil was gone, yadda yadda yadda; then whats-his-face got married. Romantic, and heroric, all that, it's the way movie's end. Cut to black; my friends and I stand up to leave; and then, back to the Hobbit village place for another scene. He's writting a book; he writes "The end". Fade to black; then another scene. And another. After that boat drove off into the sunset, a good thirty minutes later, it faded to white for a change. Then - Another scene! I said "Are you serious?" and my friends and I left. A few others did, too.

Guess they just couldn't figure how to end it. Filmed a few dozen closing scenes; used them all.

Anyways...

I never listen to the critics either. They are a bit too snobbish and high browed for me. I always enjoy the movies they trash, and like you Boomer, I always wind up wonder why they like the ones they do.

Yes, movie critics go to the same special hell as child molesters and people who talk in theatres.

Have you read the The Lord of the Rings? The endings for the most part are taken right out of the books.
I thought it was quite touching and despise how Hollywood movies have trained everyone to want the movie to be over, right after the action is complete.

Yes, the ending was taken directly from the novels, and IMO necessary to bring to a close such an epic tale.

I have come to dislike how Hollywood has had a tendency to try to end movies right after the last explosion or car chase. It gives no closure to the characters or their story. Of course that could be the plan of the writers to leave it open for sequels.

This is not 100% reliable, but my friend from high school who is at film school in LA says that Serenity is starting in his building, the movie is being called Serenity and the ship is being built. He sees Joss/Tim/Drew etc walking around all the time. He also (this i know) watches each new Angel episode with Jenny Mollen, so i kind of trust him. Things are happening. First of all, I agree with you, shameless marketing can make one cringe. I know I did when I saw the LOTR action figures at a Sci-fi convention. But some of the items on your list would be quite desirable and beloved. A PS2 game could be awesome, but only, like Static says, if it's a well-done RPG instead of a crappy piece of crap. Serenit scale models would be awesome, and board/card games has been suggested on this site. (It goes without saying that they would need to have effort put into them, etc.) Firefly plates and towels could be cool. Meaningless, but still cool. A novelization, most likely crappy, is inevitable. They novelized almost every recent sci-fi/fantasy, even Galaxy Quest. The only ones spared are those based on books, like Star Wars and the LOTR trilogy.

Yes, shameless marketing is normally irritating, but you know, if it is Firefly I will make an exception.

Quite honestly, I would buy anything Firefly that they put out. Models, card games, and board games would be great. I would love a PS2 game, but I agree it would have to be a well done one.

Firefly could provide high schools with new band instruments - start small with kazoo, work up to trombone and eventually marimbas and tuba!!
Enlist the NRA in advertising Firefly
Bake sales - browncoat brownies and Firefly newtons!
Finally, Firefly should endorse it's own Presidential candidate (Not Ralph Nader!!!)

Hey, now! I like the idea of helping high school bands out!

Or course, I'm biased as I'm a "band parent". Stupid sports get all of the cash, and the band is left to raise all the money on their own.

School board --> <-- Band parents
