((BORED!!!))

((weep))

I made some new headphones this week, using Skullcandy ear-bud-things as the base. Comprised of brass, copper, leather, and shoe laces, I cobbled these together using a hammer, some files, my new jeweler's saw (oh, i love my new jeweler's saw), and my crappy soldering iron. And, yeah, they actually work, which is the biggest shock to me.

And now that they're done, I don't really like them. 8(

You could always send them to me, I'd never use them, but they look cool. Something downright unsettling about the headphones that you put right inside your ears till they touch your brain.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I like brain-touchy headphones, they conform to the shape of my ear canal so they don't generally hurt, and they block out anything I don't want to hear, and when I move around (say, at work) they will stay in place and be nearly invisible, so as long as I keep one ear free for hearing people, I can have music at work and the stuffy bosses are none the wiser.
And those are awesome. I, too, am in awe of the transformative skillz.

*can't see pics yet cuz of stupid server, will comment on headphones when she gets home* the problem with brain touchy headphones is they dont let any sound escape, so you run the risk of doing more damage to your hearing if you don't keep them at super low volume.

barkeep, something refreshing for this strangely muggy afternoon (seeing as how yesterday was FREEZING). oh, and some raid for all of the yellow jackets O.O

Steampunk stethoscope!!! Is teh awesooooommm!!!

(You know... if I was to get an old stethoscope and take the diaphragm off and get some tube-y bits and then... nah, I probably would scare the patients at work.)

Those old fetoscopes just sort of beg to be hacked. Long trumpety sound tube, complicated hoseworks..

Medical equipment generally, when I stop to think about it. Today we worry about disinfecting so things tend to be stainless or plastic.

Dear CrazySeils,
I understand your concerns about the brain pokey thing. The Skullcandy brand is, so far, the only comfortable, reliable, good sounding set I've found - earbuds or otherwise. These here ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/sara013/2896540491/in/set-721575942050844

Yes, it looks like a stethoscope, but is really magical music producing cranial interface thing.

I now have visions of HK making a steampunk stethoscope...

Skullcandy is the only kind I can use.. tiny ears and hard plastic do not match well ..plus if you're going to have them in, why not be comfy

Those headphones for your next project look much more my style. I prefer the ones that have the large over-ear cups rather than the inside pokey bits. They also cut down outside noise and I personally think they usually sound better too. Just a shame they aint as easy to carry around.

oh HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY those are 'narly!!!!! nice.

MsA: I hear ya on that one. I can't wear the iPod headphones that are flat and supposed to rest right on the curvy part on the outside of your ear ><;; I need the skull candy style (only mine are Sony stereo ones, and the sound quality is AWESOME)

I just got my first iPod! It's a Touch. An evil part of me wants to make it full of steampunk goodness. That shiny, slippery, mirror finish metal back is begging to be inlaid or engraved or enclosed or something..

I have to agree with you, they do sound quite better than the earbuds, but for me I have to go with portability. I'd love a pair of those Bose ones you linked me to a while back though.

GEE

Morning all,

so I return from a fabulous weekend to a Monday morning of urgh and a Friday deadline but just about keeping my head above water, how we all doing?

I like the headphones HK but then I'm jealous of anyone with that kind of skill with their hands, nearest I can get is wielding a drum stick. I also love the earbud headphones (love my sennheisers) but I'm pretty careful with the volume and wear ear plugs a lot at gigs both playing and watching, came through hearing test at work fine even with the air con whining and interfering!

I cannot believe my beloved Bengals effed up on the last play but I must thank you Kel, my fantasy team has so far scored highest in my league in no small part thanks to the Lions rolling over against Drew Brees although not counting my chickens in this week's matchup but maybe my team won't be as bad as I feared.

Well must get on, a ton of work to do.

*magics up drinks for all and leaves them in stasis ready for people when they turn up*

ROXYFREEFALL

Woman, you are completely off your nut.

This Con*Crud is eating me ALIVE!! It's gone for a bit, then comes back, then gets better, then gets worse. Ugh!! I'm a lil worried my poor cat, Lister, caught the crud. He puked 6 times yesterday and all he's been doing is cuddling with me. He's laying on my chest right now. It's making it a bit tough to type, but I don't have the heart to move him. Poor lil guy. :(

Other than that I'm eating a poptart so it makes matters better. ^^

HK, one day I'm gonna commission you to make something super awesome for me... and I know it will exceed my expectations 10 fold. You are so talented. <3

Oh earbuds definitely need to be squishy. And I never turn them up very loud. As you said, no sound escapes, so there's really no need. The sound quality can be better with a full-on set, but being a spectacled person I find a great many of those to be highly uncomfortable, and the most comfortable and best-sounding are of course the most expensive.
I have been firebombing my head cold with vitamin D and sleep. It's hanging on by its fingernails. The achy feverishness is all gone, scratchy throat is gone, just a little stuffiness left to bomb away.
And I have to go to work. Yay.
