I tried at about 9, I KNEW I should have tried at midnight :( I wonder if they have any kind of waiting list for cancellations...

I'd check forums and boards to see if anyone has a cancellation... also 60 days prior to D*C the Hyatt is requiring payment so a lot of rooms may suddenly become available...

Sounds like a plan, thanks :) Any particular forums you'd suggest (other than FFF.net)?

I'd really like to be in the Marriott because that seems to be where the majority of things I'm interested in are at every year, but I guess beggars can't be choosers...

While Dragon con sounds like a fun experience to attend, I don't think I like the spirit of the event, if people are going to reserve rooms in advance like that. It is possible someone may have reserved a room for themselves, but I suspect most of the reservations were made just so others can't get the rooms. All of the rooms in a hotel booking out in fifteen minutes sounds very suspicious to me.

Not at all - the other three host hotels have been available (and sold out) for almost a month, and by the time the actual event happens there are about ten other hotels which will also be full of con attendees. So there have been several hotels' worth of people all of whom knew that the last remaining host hotel was going to open its bookings on Oct 1 and that they would likely sell out fast.

Even so I don't think it sold out in 15 minutes - I'm presuming the bookings opened at midnight and if they didn't sell out until 7:30 then that's actually longer than I would have expected it to take.

The reason reservations fill up so fast is that these icky football fans who have some major game during the same time period figured out about Dragon Con's nicer rates... so they jump our reservations. There's no way to force someone to prove they are part of Dragon Con to get the rate so we're kind of SOL.

While I happen to be a fan of college football, I have to give props to the DC fans for thinking so far in advance. For the football game, held at the GA Dome that same weekend, teams will change each year ( Between the SEC and ACC ) but DC will ALWAYS have the same fun filled folks, year in and year out.

Rallem, I'd wish you'd rethink your cynical views on why folks are getting rooms so far in advance. I've been to DC twice, and I HIGHLY recommend it for anyone even remotely interested in Sci-Fi and the like. Staying in the participating hotels gives fans a great opportunity to be IN on most of the fun, room parties, etc...

...eh, that's debatable.
Don't forget that your own "browncoat buddies"
also decide to place reservations for entire blocks of rooms (e.g. 15-20 rooms),
thereby fucking over the rest of us. ^__^

I called at midnight last night and the Marriott said reservations would be taken at 8 a.m. Eastern Time this morning. So, at 7:58 a.m., I both called and started the reservation process online at the same time. I was able to get my room (double beds) online but not able to get another for my brother and his fiance. About that time, I was connected to the lady on the other end of the phone who revealed that the double-bed rooms had all sold out, but that rooms with king beds were going a little slower, so I snagged one of those as well for him.

But yes, the wait was tense and I'm sure they sold quickly.

While those using the passkey system were limited to booking one room at a time (to try and prevent booking large blocks of rooms), certain people have made arrangements with staff members at the Marriott to bypass this, and are proudly telling all who'll listen about their block of 8 rooms (that they're unlikely to hold onto, due to wanting to stay in a diff hotel).

What's the cost of renting an apartment in the area for a week?

HUSG Nico.. do you really want to try and make your way back to an apartment at 4 am while drunk??

HUGS Rose... don't panic yet sweety. It's not full payment just one night at Hyatt and I have a feeling lots of people will have dropped their reservations right before so hopefully we will be able to get some:)

Ok so people suck and are being rude..

Depending on how close it was, and how many panhandlers I'd have to avoid, it might be worthwhile.
