"which will see all nine original cast members - Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite, Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, Ron Glass and Alan Tudyk - reprising their roles." http://www.buffy.nu/article.php3?id_article=3418

YES!!!

More info from universalpictures.com:

GROUNDBREAKING WRITER/DIRECTOR JOSS WHEDON
MAKES HIS FEATURE DIRECTORIAL DEBUT FOR UNIVERSAL PICTURES

UNIVERSAL CITY, CA, March 3, 2004 – Joss Whedon—the Oscar®- and Emmy-nominated writer/director responsible for the worldwide television phenomena of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel—is set to make his feature film directorial debut with the futuristic action-adventure Serenity, it was announced today by Mary Parent and Scott Stuber, vice chairmen, production, Universal Pictures.

Based on Whedon’s cult hit television series Firefly (which has taken on a second life following its December 9, 2003, DVD release, winning new fans and critical praise worldwide), Serenity will continue and expand upon the adventures of the memorable characters launched in the series, who will be joined by new characters created expressly for the motion picture adaptation. Whedon will act as both screenwriter and director, with Barry Mendel (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and the upcoming Wes Anderson film, The Life Aquatic) producing and Chris Buchanan (president of Whedon’s Mutant Enemy production company) and Alisa Tager (of Barry Mendel Productions) serving as executive producers. The Serenity cast will include such returning Firefly cast members as Nathan Fillion as Captain Malcolm ‘Mal’ Reynolds, Gina Torres as Zoë Warren, Morena Baccarin as Inara Serra, Jewel Staite as Kaylee Frye, Adam Baldwin as Jayne Cobb, Sean Maher as Dr. Simon Tam and Summer Glau as River Tam.

“We have wanted to be in business with Joss Whedon for a long time and we’re incredibly excited to be working with him on his feature film directorial debut,” stated Parent and Stuber. “Joss is a true creator, whose talent crosses all mediums. His mythic worlds are inhabited with rich, detailed and very human characters. Serenity will provide him with a great opportunity to paint another larger-than-life canvas with very identifiable, real characters at the heart of the story.”
Whedon—whose compelling use of character, place and dramatic development helped Buffy and Angel to break down genre walls and cross over into global hit mainstream territory—now applies his trademark compassion and wit to a small band of galactic outcasts 500 years in the future. The film centers around Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family – squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal.

When Mal takes on two new passengers—a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister—he gets much more than he bargained for. The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl. The crew that was once used to skimming the outskirts of the galaxy unnoticed find themselves caught between the unstoppable military force of the Universal Alliance and the horrific, cannibalistic fury of the Reavers, savages who roam the very edge of space. Hunted by vastly different enemies, they begin to discover that the greatest danger to them may be on board Serenity herself.

In addition to creating the series Firefly, Angel and Buffy (as well as serving as executive producer on all three while writing and directing multiple episodes), Whedon’s feature film screenwriting credits include the original motion picture Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Toy Story (for which he received an Academy Award® nomination) and Alien: Resurrection. Whedon also composed the music and wrote the lyrics for the self-directed Buffy episode “Buffy, The Musical,” and the CD of the original songs from that landmark episode has sold more than 400,000 units. Whedon was nominated for the Emmy for outstanding writing on the Buffy episode entitled “Hush.” Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the second highest-selling television series on DVD.

Happy day, oh, happy day!

Movie greenlighted... everyone on board (I expect Ron and Alan are also there)... This is going to be a freaking great movie!

I am really enjoying my DVD set and have just now started watching all the commentaries.

Oh, I tried to watch them... about a month ago, but I would get so enthralled with what was happening on the screen that I would turn off the commentary.

I can't wait for this movie! Whoo hooo!!!

From what one of the crew posted on the official board back in Jan or Feb of '03, the sets were torn down and tossed out. They did not save anything.

I imagine Joss will want to build new sets anyway in keeping w/ the "bigger, more epic" feel he is looking for w/ the movie.

Wouldn't it be something if the only thing from the original set was that "Big Red Button".

Keep chatting up Firefly and Serenity, y'all.
This movie should definitely "highly anticipated" by the time opening weekend hits.
Xie-xie: to Universal, for having the forsight and taste to make this film a reality; to the fans for keeping "Serenity" flyin' via every way from word of mouth to internet sites, to making the DVD set a success; and to Joss for never giving up the dream.

I have to share that I had the best day yesterday.

At work, we had our annual employee communication meetings. The Vice-President of our division singled out my department (otherwise known as my boss and me)for having done a great job with our part of the merger that happened last year. Then he announced that we had done better than expected from a profit standpoint, so they were awarding bonuses to all employees this Friday. (Absolutely unexpected, because most of us thought the merger had caused us to underperform rather than overperform.)

Then I came home and learned the Firefly was OFFICIAL. It does not get any better than this.

You're on my crew. Why are we still talking about this?

what about Alan Tudyk and Ron Glass.. it wont be Serenity without Preacher and Wash.

I hope they just didnt mention them( tho thats almost an equal shame, since they were so much of the crew in thier own right).

I am sure Alan & Ron will be part of the film. It is most likely scheduling and finalizing paperwork that is holding up the announcement of their signing.

Once it is official, we will hear that they are onboard.

I've been a regular "lurker" for the last few months, but just wanted to post a response to the "Wash" and "Book" absence. If you look up Alan Tudyk's name in the IMDB website you'll see that they have him LISTED as a cast member for Serentity in 2005. Ron Glass too. So I'm sure it's just final scheduling stuff and contract negotiations holding up the "official" notice. Thought you'd all be interested!

Have a shiny day!

Um, I thought what she was saying was that you have to go to their individual pages, not the movie page. But then I checked and that's not right either. Hmm.

I'm sure they're going to be signed on soon! Alan was listed in the casting spoiler, and Ron has provided his address with other movie-people (look on serenitymovie.net for more info), so I'm sure it's just legalities keeping them out (for now)!

Actually, in my original post I DID mean that you had to look at the individual actor page for Alan Tudyk and "Serenity.....2005" was listed in his filmography. I went back there after having read your responses today and noticed that it doesn't include Serenity and the picture of him is different. Could be the updated the web site???

Either way...they HAVE to have Wash and Book in the movie....so I'm just gonna believe it's so!
