GARDS

Greetings from the UK everyone, as you can see i'm a noob.

I first saw Serenity a few years ago and thought it was a cool film. It was only last week when I started watching the series and sure enough after the pilot I was hooked. I had to discipline myself to not watch each episode one after the other as I knew there were only 14 episodes, I watched them all in 4 days and i'm devastated it's over :(

How! Did this show get cancelled!?! poor ratings I guess. I have also seen "Done the impossible" and was impressed by the fanbase which will no doubt grow stronger year on year.

Please! At least give us another film Joss, is that even possible guys?

All the best

Gards

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

That is the question we've all been asking for more than seven years (if we watched Firefly from the start), or more than four years if Serenity in the theater was your first immersion into the 'Verse.

I know that most fans think they are being realistic in accepting the fact that there will probably never be any more (outside of comics possibly). I just don't happen to be that realistic. It's going to take several more years before I'm ready to give up the hope for more impossible happenings.

No, decent ratings(5.4 Nielson on average, great ratings for a smaller network). It didn't fit Fox's image. The network didn't want it.

What Would Mal do ?

hey Gards..a belated welcome to the verse !
and believe me, we all feel your pain.

I'm the old guy of this bunch of young rebels...at age 53 I've grown up in a world of Star Trek, etc and enjoyed many a TV series..some forgotten..some shoulda been, and then there is the rare series like Firefly that was cut off at the knees and worse..they had them writing on the fly each week..not allowing the progression that should have occured, rather having to find ways to restate the sacrifice that the young doctor made to save his sister...yadayada...

if I had money...I'd be funding whatever Joss would want to do with that show and replacing TV execs along the way til we had a working team that had a freakin clue what needed to happen to allow a series like Firefly to flourish.
instead, I find my wife gets steadily more worried about the fact that my travel bag for my laptop (I fly weekly) remains populated with my firefly series which I continue to rewatch time and again to the point of abnormaility

Yeah, but we've had our chance at a feature film....over 4yrs ago... Plus ST had 3 seasons in syndication to maintain the fanbase.

What do we have now? A collection of short stories? Maybe another comic miniseries?

There ain't gonna be no more...

I do hope and pray that I get proven wrong though...

And welcome to the 'Verse, Gards!

Welcome to the Browncoats, Gards.

I think part of the problem with FIREFLY was the timing. To paraprhase Joss, FOX came to him in the aftermath of 9/11 and said "Do you have something uplifting and patriotic?" Joss said "I have this idea for a show about nine people living in poverty in the darkness and loneliness of space..." And FOX said "Sounds good! We'll take it!"

The timing for such a dark show could not have been worse, and the network clearly didn't understand what it was or how to market it.

Such is life.

If you're hungry for more FIREFLY, there is, of course, the movie (which you've already seen) as well as two comic book mini-series (THOSE LEFT BEHIND and BETTER DAYS), which are basically the equivalent of two "lost episodes." THOSE LEFT BEHIND serves as a bridge between the series and the movie, and works just fine as a "season finale." There's also an online "short from Dark Horse Comics, which I believe is called THE OTHER HALF.

There are also short stories coming soon from some of the writers, but I'm not sure that a date has been announced. A third comic series, THE SHEPHARD'S TALE, has also been announced but not firmed up.

If you're willing to broaden your horizons, there's quite a bit of quality fanfic out there. If I can direct you to my signature, www.stillflying.net houses what I believe is the most ambitious FIREFLY "virtual series", with 29 hour-long episode scripts (finishing out the first season, and writing the second season as Joss might have done it had he done SERENITY for TV rather than as a movie). We've been pretty well-received, and if you're looking to scratch your Firefly itch, it might do the trick.

Welcome aboard!

Hi guys and thank you for all your responses.

Well I must say, i'm sad that there is no apparent word of Joss trying to bring the show back (i've done a bit of research) and the feeling on here seems to be one of hope more than anything else.

This would be the first show I even considered attending a convention of lol

So you don't think that Joss is just giving up...

When the show was cancelled in 2002, he was heartbroken. He vowed at the time that the story would continue in some form... and continue it did, both in the movie (which would never have been made without the devotion and tireless efforts of Joss, his gang, and the fanbase) and in some comic books.

When the movie proved to be a failure--at least in terms of being financially successful enough to merit a sequel--I think it broke Joss on some level. He'd had his heart broken twice by his love of FIREFLY.

Although he came back with other projects, he apparently says in his DOLLHOUSE commentary that after having his heart broken so badly, he no longer allows himself to fall in love with his work. Kind of sad, really.

My point, however, is that Joss has done everything he can to keep FIREFLY going in the past, and if he's not talking about it now, it's probably because he's out of steam.

Make no mistake, though, we've been fighting a war since December of 2002, and that war ain't done yet.

One of the writers (Molina?) has said they're part of the third volume of the Firefly companion books. Amazon says it'll be released in April.

*rumages around in the closet. Finally finds a virtual Browncoat and hands it to Gards*

Welcome to our little bit of the 'Verse. Lots of talk around here. And I just thought I'd mention that I'm involved with a little fan film that will premiere in September at Dragon*Con in Atlanta.

It'll benefit some of the favorite charities of the cast. Take a look see at www.browncoatsmovie.com. It's not Firefly but takes place in the same 'Verse.

Also look on You Tube for "Mosquito". It's a fan film/parody of Firefly done a few years ago by some enterprising Canadian Browncoats and is really good.

OLDGUY

What Would Mal do ?

obituary for "old guy" June 18, 2069...
Old Guy passed away yesterday with a gesture of love as he handed his granddaughter what appeared to be a small collection of early 21st century media once known as a "DVDs"...apparently a nature program about insects or the habits of fireflys...commonly known as lightning bugs that once existed in north america before global cooling pushed them far south of the border of the United Nations North Continent (UNNC).

Old Guy's grandaughter reported that she was a tad confused with granpaoldguy's final words to her as he handed her the worn-edged plastic cases, looked into her eyes and said...
"I'm over it"

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Welcome to the site Gards. Glad to have you aboard.

Like others have said, we were just as confused as you are when Fox decided to pull the plug, but we learned that they just didn't get it and their meddling with the show sure didn't help matters much.

So here we are, hanging on this board talking about a show long gone and what could have been. Browncoats are a tenacious lot.

I just bought the Serenity DVD (don't have Blue RAY player) and it arrived sooner than I expected, I was like a child at Christmas. I'm starting to get a bit worried about the way Firefly has effected me, something is not right about this lol

I'm a sci-fi fan and also a musician/songwriter so in my line of work you are always striving to create something that will have a lasting effect on the listener, this is how I feel about Firefly. Because it was so short lived it has left me wanting more. Knowing I will probably never experience that, it's left a longing feeling in my heart, like when you miss a friend.

I'm being totally irrational about a TV show, I hope it wares off! lol

You guys are very nice btw
