Greetings,

First of all, I'm a fan, but also a director/producer. I'd love to see fan-based 3d animated series taking life. It's really not hard to do nowadays with enough cult following and fan-based funding.

Just would like to throw the wild idea out there, and wonder if anyone has some real-world 3d experience... preferring in Maya/Motionbuilder, and would like to jump in and give it a try?

People could donate to get some compensation for the artists, and buy render time on renderrocket.com

Could do a virtual casting for the character voices online, which then could be timed to a mocap performance.

With 3d software improvements lately, it would not be hard to get something great going supported entirely by the fans. With enough interest... maybe we could resurrect the film or turn it into something bigger.

It's an interesting idea, though I have one little quibble. >_> If you pay the... production crew, I'm assuming? Then this might no longer be non-profit stuff that Fox and Universal would just ignore, and you might get hammered with Cease and Desisted.

There's a lot of shades of gray in this business and fan fiction wold that would slide just fine.

Recently I've got a Beatles song library for sale... the producers simply changed a couple notes here and there, but the essence of the music is still there.

You can make "inspired by the firefly series". That Fox and Universal would not be able to touch. I do have a couple ideas for the characters, and for the pilot plot.

The series would not be built around the same characters... that would be difficult to pull off without constantly watching your back for "can and can'ts". I would be better to build a new crew in the same universe and retain the spirit of the series.

I really don't like "alliance meddling" when it comes to creativity :) and production work.

I don't have technical know-how, but if this thing gets rolling, get me know. I'd like to volunteer as a writer (or even head writer). You can check out my work at www.stillflying.net.

Thanks,

George

Nah...

This is not ad for renderrocket. When I can, I prefer to render everything myself. But for a project of that scale... that would pushing it.

There are plenty of farms out there besides renderrocket. I just threw one out there that supports MR/maya. Maya/Motionbuilder is my preferred workflow, not to say that it's always the best... I just find it more intuitive. But since Autodesk takeover, many farms now dropping Maya. It's kind of unfortunate. Of course, there's always MR standalone route.

I've been a Firefly fan since the episode 2 :) , but don't always have time to spend on forums.

MICJWELCH

I'm very interested in doing something like this. I have experience with live action and with 3DS Max animation. I'm a writer, producer, editor, and actor - you know how it goes. You can find my work on youtube under the same user name - micjwelch. There's even some Firefly fan fiction there.

I've started work on a Firefly spin-off that, if you're interested, might be worth using. We haven't filmed it because we don't have a sound stage to build a ship in.

I'm also running a quad-core that would help a bit with the rendering.
