Did some digging around and found out that New York City and Upstate New York are a couple of the locations Joss and company are planning to use for "Serenity" when shooting starts in June.

I live upstate too--and have to keep reminding myself that to people from other parts of the country, "upstate" can mean just a few miles north of NYC!

I really, really hope they mean the real upstate!

Joss needs to haul a crew out to Lake Superior in Northern Minnesota. Few places on earth are so magnificent ... and so close to my house :)

4 hours drive is close, right?

Note to self: must briefly take up residence in New York in June after casual 3,000-mile roadtrip across country. Yawn at all comments that it's too far to drive to try to witness a movie.

A bit more info:
It also looks like ads for extras will run in the local papers, and they will also be using extra agencies in the big cities. I guess New York City would qualify as that. Heh.

Western Maine here. Very rustic area that could stand in quite suitably for any number of backwater worlds in the 'verse.

Texas Rules! After seeing the scenic backgrounds on all the episodes, a 100-mile radius around here in Austin, TX would fit the bill perfectly for ANY kind of shot, from dusty plains to wooded areas to big city vistas. Plus, shootin' a space western here in Texas would be a perfect natural!!!

As a New Yorker who still lives in NYC, I can honestly ask ... Why the hell would Joss film "Serenity" in NY anyway? For starters, it's like twice as expensive to do anything here than anyplace else except California (which explains why businesses are bailing out of CA like rats leaving a sinking ship ) Also, you have to probably grease a whole lot of NY wiseguy palms. Then, to add insult to injury, you have all the damn overly-powerful unions breathing down your neck with their hands out. All-in-all, not a friendly business environment, unless you have shields up and weapons armed

At least in Vancouver, I can't imagine you have to deal with the same brigade of jerkoffs that you would in NY. I think it's supposed to be a lot cheaper to do movie work there, too (which explains why everybody films in Vancouver nowadays.) Anyway, good luck JW.

They can have my "Firefly" DVDs when they pry them from my cold, dead fingers....

Oh yeah, you, FOX TV!!

Okay, aside from all the other stuff you said, my "why in hell's name would you film in NYC?" is more along the lines of "where the hell are they supposed to BE that's going to look like NYC?"
You can make other cities/backlots look like bits of NY, but I've never seen anyone able to make New York look like anything other than New York.

Upstate --- I'm willing to (grudgingly) give it the ol' "wait and see", simply because it could just be the setting for a planet with more of a woodsy feel than a desert feel, which we've gotten quite a lot of.

But yes! I'm with the Texas/Oklahoma people, partially cause I'm in Oklahoma , and partially cause between those two states, you've got every type of landscape under the sun except very high snowy mountains. And both places are verycheap for filming, labour, & housing. And we're much friendlier.

I will admit, I have serious NY/LA issues, in that as cities, they seem to think that they're the only cities that matter in the nation. That's really a whole other rant though...

Hey, I totally agree. Many people here in NYC are a bunch of self-involved, reality-show-watching, cell-phone-abusing mouth-breathers. Remember, this is the locale for "Friends", and we all know what those vacuous morons are like.

Ahem, anyway, as far as the whole variety of landscapes in Oklahoma/Texas thing, I'll take your word for it. Whatever helps Joss spend more money on post

Yah, I've done a fair bit of camping up in the 'Dacks (place called Big Eddy, near Wells, on the Sacandaga River). It is truly lovely country, and a nice space for more sylvan settings than we've seen in FF so far.

As for NYC, I was having many of the same thoughts about the expense, inconvenience, and sheer unmistakability of the City (much as I adore it [or at least have adored it; Bloomberg is doing his damndest to castrate it utterly!] ).

But I trust in Joss; if he's chosen the Big Apple (mind the griswalds!), then there must be a good reason which I very much look forward to see come to fruition (hey, that's a pun! How rare for me).

Keep Flyin'!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Well, Fireflymovie.com verifies NYC & upstate NY as filming locations:

http://www.fireflymovie.com/news.html

I have to wonder where the crew is supposed to be as well that will appear as NYC. Could just be that some of the urban environs w/ suitable mocking up will pass for a futuristic city.

I also wonder why Joss & crew would choose NYC knowing it would be far more expensive to shoot there than any metropolitan area in Canada.

I wonder if they'll need extras? I looked through that casting call, and don't see a character for me!

The NYC thing does make me scratch my head, too. I second that NYC always looks like NYC on film.

You know it just occured to me that they might use Chinatown as the back drop in NYC. Makes sense, and would emphasize the Mandarin influence in the Firefly 'verse.

I believe they will go through agencies or local newspapers to hire extras. Check it out ZikZak, perhaps you could be in the movie.

You're right, that does make sense -- but isn't there a just-as-large Chinatown in San Francisco? Or is it LA?

My knowledge of Californian sub-cities isn't exactly huge, clearly...
