Woulda hit shelves on Wednesday (I just got to the shop today).

We've been talking about it for months, but the release date nearly slipped by us. I weep for our kind. I can only assume everyone's distracted by "Still Flying" (I'll be getting my copy of that this weekend).

Also, a MAJOR revelation (though not one that we didn't see coming, exactly).

We applied the cortical electrodes but were unable to get a neural reaction from either patient.

I picked it up today while I was in the city and just blazed through it.

GREAT READ.

SPOILERS BELOW

Select to view spoiler:

I really liked the crew of friends Patton created, as well as their memories of Wash. They have enough character so that you feel like they exist and could keep going on their own storyline, but they're not in your face with the newness. If they wanted to, Trey and the guys feel like a group the Serenity crew could pair up with from time to time for some caper pulling. I also felt Wash was captured nicely in each memory, it was a sweet tribute.

Alright, huge spoiler now, Zoe comes in at the very end as part of the sendoff of the new ship, and the final panel reveals she's got a little girl Washburn on the way. So he lives on :)

I'm really going to have to read through this a few times to get everything out of it, but that's what I have after my first pass.

Ash

I thought it was enjoyable, but it felt a little hollow. Without getting spoiler-y, each of the stories seems to focus more on Wash's piloting ability than his character. I was hoping for maybe a little more insight rather than "Here's some more tricks like the Crazy Ivan."

Definitely an enjoyable read, though, and the tag on the inside cover (Number 7 in a series) makes me hope that there will be more Serenity after The Shepherd's Tale AND that Dark Horse will eventually release a Serenity Omnibus.

I don't have Still Flying in-hand yet (it's on the way from Amazon), so for me, this was the first official piece of post-Serenity fiction ever. On the one hand, it's very cool to see a little bit of life after the movie.

On the other hand, if Joss is spilling the beans on important stuff in comics, that makes me think he's given up hope of a new movie or series. Certainly not surprising, but still a little sad to see it hit home.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Got my copy yesterday. Love it!

The Man They Call Soul...

Okay, this is crazy. The top ship on page six was actually created by one of our own, Werzbowski. The link is to the physical model created by John Douglass ( www.artships.com). No clue how it made it's way into the comic, but it is the same ship. No question about it.

Compare this pic to the artwork:

From the comic:

Even the little details are exactly the same.

It sure is! He even used the specs, where both the Repose and Reposita are referred to by Wash as "flying bricks."

"with a cheese sandwich strapped to it."

Or similar.

Nice little shout out to you. Guess they do watch the fan stuff. :)

Read the comic. Any of the ships on that site look familiar? Maybe...all of them?!?

I love the dedication they put in this:

"For Alan Tudyk, for making us believe a man can fly. A spaceship."

Classic.

Got it. Nice art (REALLY nice, actually!), but story seemed a little vignette-ish to me. Definitely enjoyed it, though. Thumbs up.

Yeah, I kind of agree. I think that it could have done with being a double length issue with more time spent on each story. Especially the third, which was way too short.

Still, good to see Serenity making a comeback. I support a full relaunch in comics wholeheartedly.

Hey, Crazy. Yeah, a tidbit.

What about "Still Flyin"?
Anyone read that yet?

Is it a must-get?

What is the name of this new comic? I think I just went through this whole thread without finding that useful data.Does Shepard's Tale occur before the series, after BDM, or in the middle?

I picked it up today, my fave bookstore can't get it (lousy ordering system), so went to the evil bookstore to scarf up a copy. Must get for me. Shiny interviews, so far, good tidbits, much to read, will take me a while.

Yes, "Firefly - Still Flying" is worth it. I spent more time looking at the book than the time it took to earn the money for the book, at my minimum wage job. But I read slowly... that's why I got a crap job. Which means "Firefly - Still Flying" is even more "must-get" for you than me if you're well paid.

On page 142 of "Firefly - Still Flying" there is a half-page drawing called "Serenity Forward Cutaway View" by John R. Mullaney. I wish it was sized for two full pages. That's it below. There is more detail on the printed page than my scanner shows. Maybe someday a bigger drawing will be for sale. Or posted on the internet as a series of megabyte size jpg pictures for those of us who don't have wall space for limited edition prints.

The architectural illustrator who drew Serenity, John R. Mullaney, wrote, "Being a huge fan of Joss Whedon's Firefly series, I really wanted to illustrate this beautifully designed spacecraft in a dynamic perspective. Browncoats: Watch this space - I will be producing a series of limited edition Firefly prints in 2009" - www.thetopdraw.com/science_fiction_hi_res.html 2009 is history and still no prints from QMx.

Elsewhere at thetopdraw.com it says, "John is currently hard at work on a series of Serenity cross-section artworks for Universal studios licensee QuantumMechanix.com. The artworks are scheduled for an Autumn 2009 release." - www.thetopdraw.com/ Autumn 2010 is on the way and still NO PRINTS.

To show the detail in these prints, there are pictures of Inara's shuttle by John R. Mullaney posted at www.fireflyshipworks.com/2009/06/the-last-csts-reveal-%e2%80%93-sereni

Me too. The last page was great and confirmed what I have long believed. Good book, but just leaves me wanting more and wondering why Joss won't give us a monthly title.
