Whedonites United present their second annual Whedonfest, a weekend-long convention, to be held August 6-8 at Barefoot Republic in Scottsville, KY. All proceeds will be donated to charities designated by the Can't the Stop the Serenity Global organization or Whedonites United.

In August of 2009, Whedonites United held their first-ever weekend-long convention in Smyrna, TN, as part of a global network of Can't Stop the Serenity events. With the help of its all-volunteer staff, WhedonFest 2009 raised more than $2,000 dollars for charity. Whedon fans from across the Southeast gathered to enjoy panels, costume contests and other fun events, culminating with the traditional CSTS screening of Serenity on Sunday afternoon. This year promises to be even better!

WhedonFest is scheduled for August 6-8. Designed to welcome fans of all Whedon's work, the programming will cover Buffy, Firefly, Angel, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and Dollhouse. Events include panel discussions and activity workshops, a “Shindig” with costume contest, a raffle and auction, and more! As a new addition this year, attendees can look forward to screenings of two Whedon-related fan works: The Streamy-award-nominated Horrible Turn, and the classic Browncoat documentary Done the Impossible.

WhedonFest will be held at Barefoot Republic, near Scottsville, KY. This campground, with treehouse-style cabins, brings comfortable, handicapped-accessible accommodations to a natural setting reminiscent of those seen on Firefly. The site has a paintball field (perfect for the planned re-enactment of the Battle of Serenity Valley) and river access for those interested in kayaking or canoeing.

All proceeds from this event will go to charity. In addition to the CSTS charities of Equality Now and Kids Need to read, whedonfest will donate 10% of its procedes to New Leash on Life, a local animal welfare organization.

WhedonFest 2010 is not to be confused with the Starry Night Productions event of a smiliar name. We were using the name last year! ;-) If you can't make it to WhedonFest, please suport your nearest CSTS event.

find us online on Facebook, Twitter (@WhedonitesUnite), or www.whedonitesunited.com

ETA: We're proud to annouce that as a speaker, we'll have "The father of Buffy Studies", MTSU's own David Lavery!

Tried to see you on Twitter, but the @WheodnitesUnite didn't work. Also, the button/links on the website don't seem to be working right. (At least not in Firefox.)

The cost for the event does include summer camp group cabin lodging and all the meals for the weekend. Also, the place LOOKS like a border planet.
By the way..in addition to Serenity...other films we have lined up are
Done the Impossible
Dr Horrible
Horrible Turn (Fanfilm:The Musical)
The Guild (All three seasons)
MegaBot (an off color send up of power team giant robot shows..only Whedon connection is that it stars Fran Kranz:Topher from Dollhouse)
plus a few more little vignettes...
all that in addition to panels,a shindig, and the option to participate in the Serenity Valley Paintball Re-enactment.

By the way..for those of you not big with the map..Scottsville is about an hour from Nashville..and about equally distant on a straight line between Owensboro and Knoxville on a map..less than an 30 minutes from Bowling Green, couple of hours from Knoxville. Although its a Nashville "based" event...its pretty centraly located for Kentucky and Tennessee as a whole...

Far as I know, pre-registration is still going on for the next week or two, if anyone in the area thinks they'd like to attend. :)

(I hope the car troubles get sorted out soon if they haven't already!)

Yay, finally got car back Monday, and they took off 10% for being soooooo long with it... The repair guy said "Hey, $1150 is better than the 12-somethin' it was, isn't it? That's gotta make you feel better.." I said "So would YOU feel good about losin' $1100?" HE said "There's no WAY I could even think about $500 right now, let alone $1100" and I said "Well, there ya go..."

Gonna try to make it there, but we'll see...

Bumping this thread for anyone in the middle Tennessee or Kentucky area since pre-registration at www.whedonitesunited.com ends today at midnight! (Pacific Time). I remember people from Ohio, Alabama, and NC coming last year too, since the weekend worked out well for traveling.

From what I've read in the group's postings elsewhere, attendees are welcome to register at the door, though registration fees go up, and it may cause food to be in slightly shorter supply. Still beats eatin' protein... :)

Now to finalize my decision about a costume for the costume contest...! I *think* anything Whedon-related goes since the weekend includes all the shows, not just Firefly costumes (though those were by far the most popular types last year).

What are your costume-y options?

My costume-y choices have been narrowed down to Zoe Washburne or Adelle DeWitt. The latter is complete aside from selecting some jewelry to accompany the ensemble; the former involves attempting to sew leather-like vinyl with a cheap-end sewing machine in a quickly-disappearing span of time, but besides the vest it's complete too.

...It's just more fun to dress like Firefly people IMO, but I can do a better Adelle impression than Zoe, so... =\ I *fail* at Zoe impressions! (CellarDoor tries to forget WhedonFest 2009's improv activity that she flubbed and fails miserably. Hehe, that's a story.).

Gee, when I break it down like that... Well, we'll see.

I have a couple of things that could make a workable Inara, and one thing that I could use as a Yo-Saf, but am afraid to try it on as I have not in four years...Also own a brown jumpsuit but don't think I could pull it off well.

Hubby has been a blue hand man in the past but don't think a suit would work in 100 degree heat. We have a Jayne hat and could style him OK, but not perfect. Hubby looks kinda like Tom Berringer (shaved though) so ??? can't think of anyone he could even remotely pull off. Purple Belly #4? -Boring! I'm at a loss for large male costumes that don't require lotsa layers...

That begs the question: are the ideas limited to Firefly or the whole WhedonVerse for you (or rather, your husband)? ...There's always a Dollhouse doll-state yoga outfit to fall back on... =\ Not so great for a Shindig though!

He's not so enamoured of Buffy, though we have seen most of Angel. Thought about doing Lorne, but massive sweat+green makeup= ick!
Might be helpful for the paintball tourney, at least half the camo would be done!

Never got into Dollhouse, it just wasn't fun enough for us. We're fans of the witty banter kinda stuff...

Kinda wish I hadn't shaved him Sunday, maybe he could've gone as Monty...(if that's his name)

Could do Crow, but like I said it's gonna be hot!
don't know what to use on the face that would work??? Anyone use henna? Think the local beauty store has that.
