Browncoats: Redemption ( http://browncoatsmovie.com/) has been released. You can view the trailer on their website (there was an online premiere, but it is already over) and buy DVDs & other Redemption schwag on their website. All the proceeds go to the traditional cast of Browncoat charities:

* Equality Now
* Kids Need to Read
* Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center
* Dyslexia Foundation
* Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation

I was at the premiere at Dragon*Con last weekend and this is a super shiny film. They packed the room to over capacity with more than 1000 attending.

The FX look nice in the trailer. Is the story worthy of Joss? Has he seen it do you know?

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Shame I missed the online premiere, but I will be ordering a dvd. Pretty excited about checking it out.

Wow! No pressure THERE!

Browncoats: Redemption is a solid fan film effort.
Figure it had a budget of about 1/40 of the average TV show, actors who were willing to work for free, relied heavily on donations for nearly everything:
for all that and despite a bit of un-eveness;
I'd still rate B:R above most of the SciFi channel movies I've seen.

The B:R folks have every reason to be proud of their efforts.
Their film was finished on a budget and on a schedule, which is a hard thing to do.

B:R is entertaining for Firefly fans certainly, and I'd think even for those not familiar with the series.

I definitely recommend buying a copy to support the charities, to encourage further fan film efforts, and to enjoy.

Mike

LOL, I just meant to ask does it have a Jossy feel to it, script-wise.
It sure looks fine, I just can't make out much of the *sound* of the characters in the trailer.

I'll likely be ordering it soon in any case.

( And as further proof of my faith, I'm not even going to catch the trailer. I plan on watching it completely in the dark, with as few preconceptions as possible. )

It is the closest I've seen yet. The plot pivots in a very Jossy/Firefly kind of way and in some of the dialog I could swear I was listening to the series.

Oh, and the cameos... just wait till you see them, your jaw will drop!

Yes, yes, the cameos! Hehe, that's definitely fun to look for on a first, second, or third watching! I watched the online premiere since I couldn't be at Dragon*Con, and my family and I enjoyed it together. :) Oh, and a less-noticeable "cameo" is a musical piece towards the middle of the film that Greg Edmonson composed as his contribution to the effort. It's *beautiful* and placed at an emotional reflective scene. I was pretty impressed by the music throughout; it really felt like it was from the 'Verse.

The dialogue definitely uses Firefly-speak, and they had a Chinese language consultant for the film to include a handful of Chinese curses. Oh, not to mention that Browncoats: Redemption features a couple of "Strong Female Characters." ;)

I went ahead and bought two copies--one as a gift. I would definitely encourage any and all readers of this thread, lurkers or posters, to buy the DVD and support the fan effort and charities! Even though there's some room for improvement, these Browncoats brought a major undertaking to fruition that many fans have only talked about thus far. Kudos to them!

Think of it this way: you get to support Joss Whedon's, Ron Glass', Adam Baldwin's, Jewel Staite's and Nathan Fillion's favorite charities, and as a bonus, you get a shiny, fan-produced DVD movie thrown in to enjoy over and over again!

In a short space of time you came to care about the characters which is one of the most important things in something like this. I was at Dragon*Con but was sadly turned away from the overflowed premiere (Which makes me happy it was so well recieved!) but I did pick up my copy there and was chomping at the bit the whole way home to see it. It was well worth the wait!

Hey all,

Things have been insanely hectic, but I wanted to pop on and let you know the first two boxes full boxes of ground shipping packages went out this morning and more will be going out this week.

Over 1,000 Browncoats attended the in person premiere at Dragon*Con with several being turned away due to limited seating. The audio/video for the premiere wasn't what we've hoped, but those that picked up a copy of the DVD know the final product is better than what was shown.

There were at least 13,000 views of the 48 hours Global Online Premiere. We received word that the Vimeo server, who was anticipating a heavy hit, couldn't take the number of simultaneous views so some people's viewing lagged.

We are just under 1,200 DVD’s ordered, since the premiere, towards our one year goal of moving 32,000 DVD’s to raise half a million dollars for charity. With your help we can do something mighty for the charities.

If you ordered and requested priority shipping, the Post Office didn't have enough boxes to fulfill all the orders so the rest will be going out this weekend.

If you are over seas (outside of the US), we are just waiting on additional customs paperwork to get that out and, hopefully, just like the priority shipping, these will go out this weekend as well.

Unless something goes wrong, all orders that were placed by last Saturday should be filled and mailed by a week from this Saturday. Once your DVD's ship, we'll be sending an email to the address you filled out when you placed an order online. We'll try to keep you updated on what's going on.

Thank you for the amazing feedback and support here about the film. Without you, and your support, we can't make our goal. This is an amazing community of people and I'm honored to be a part of it.

We are capable of taking overseas orders. We had a glitch that was blocking them but it has been resolved. We responded to all emails letting us know there was an issue and put an updates out on Facebook and Twitter as well when it was fixed. We have been receiving orders globally since then.

If one fell through the cracks and landed in our junk folder and was missed I apologize. We are trying to keep up with everything while working our day jobs and I know there are times we are capable of dropping the ball, but we will always work towards fixing the problems as we can.

And you should finish watching it before you judge it.
I'd say that NO low budget, fan-made movie will ever challenge a professionally produced TV show or movie,
especially one the caliber of Firefly.
If that was ever the expectation for Browncoats: Redemption, or for that matter:
Mosquito
Faith of a Man
Into The Black
Bellflower
Big Iron
Courage: The Series
Fool Me Twice
Reaverized
The Ruins of Du-Khang
The Game
Freedom: The Series

then that isn't reasonable.

Although B:R isn't Firefly,
I guess I feel a sense of disappointment that there are folks who can live on a Browncoats' board,
and not share a sense of appreciation for what the B:R crew accomplished.

Watch it all,
and say it's not your cup-o'-tea,
but at least know why you don't like it.

Oh, I'll finish watching it.... it's just the first bit I did see...

Select to view spoiler:

I get the intent, and appreciate the effort, I really do. But there's a gripe I have when folks sort of over do things, to hype the fact that this is a FIREFLY based story, and to make sure we all know it, we're going to drop in as many "shiny", " gorram " or " pee-goo's " as we can.

Of course I wasn't expecting Joss and Co. level of writing, that's just be silly. No where else in Hollywood , where folks do this for a living, do we find the sort of excellence Joss has snagged over the years. But that's sort of my point. If you're going to write something like this, start off w/ the basics... a good solid story, and then , as you flesh out the particulars, feel your way around a bit, drop in a " gorram " or a bit of Chinese, as it feels right. I get the impression, from what little I've seen, that they've crammed into the conversation those words and phrases most die hard fans would easily recognize, as if to say.... " Hey ! ya remember that from the series, right ? Well, we're using it now too! So you know we're really trying ! "

OVER trying, is more like it.

I frakkin' loved it. Watched twice already.
I feel it did snag a piece of the 'Verse quite well.
More than anything else, I loved the story. Simple, straightfoward... no, it wasn't Firefly, nor was it meant to be. These peeps knew their limitations, and stayed fairly well within them.
Okay, no space battle, but how many were in FIREFLY?

Did you expect a Universal Studios quality movie, or did someone explain to you that this was a Fan Film (no sarcasm intended)?
