Simon = Luke??? Really? Simon is a hero???

I would say: Simon = Jar Jar Binks! hahaha

And River = Yoda / Zoe = Chewie??? Are you sure you wanna stick with these analogies?

I'm thinkin' Zoe and River would kick your ass tag team style for that! hahaha

Dude, you must have forgotten what Luke was like when we first met him. Simon wasn't nearly as much of a whiner Simon just hasn't had the time to grow into the hero Luke did yet. Give him a few years, cut his hand off, and you might see something that would surprise you. I'd say it took at least 3 or 4 years after Return of the Jedi in the star wars books before Luke was as strong as Han was IMO.

I can confirm your star wars math, but I still haven't watched much bsg yet.

Ok I can see most of these comparisons and why you picked them. Wash's counterparts are especially appropriate given their ultimate fates. Neither Starbuck or Apollo fit well as Mal or Simon but it doesn't really work if you swap them either. Simon as Luke is a stretch as well but (as sais above) we never got to see what Simon may become later.
Mal might fit better as Apollo if you put Inara as Jane Seymours character. Especially if what I read in another thread here is true about Inara's situation.

My biggest question mark is with Kaylee. R2 is an absolutely perfect fit IMO and the best one in the list.
But Muffet? I get that Muffet is intended to be cute and lovable, like Kaylee, but I thought that most BSG fans hated the dog. At least from what I've read/heard. Am I wrong in this?

After a thoughtful analysis of your piece I do believe that it's one of the most brilliant, exciting, and imaginative works I've ever seen here. They're all wonderfully woven together in their own delicious way, and my favorite is Inara as the lowly Socialator/noble med-tech/brave freedom fighting warrior.

CYBERSNARK

There really isn't an engineer character in original BSG, is there? It was all pilots, bridge bunnies, and flag staff. Yeah, R2 fits for Kaylee, both for the cuteness, the engineering, and the snark.

Simon is more like a cross between Luke (the young idealist out of his element) and 3P0 (the proper gentleman). Apollo is a good fit, what with his combination of youthful idealism and what might as well have been an upper crust heritage (original Adama was more a regal statesman than a military leader).

I wouldn't really compare Jayne to Lando. Despite Lando's mercenary tendencies, he was never much of a fighter; Lando survived on hit wits, charm, and gambler's luck (less "luck" than being able to read people and situations and "bet" accordingly) --same for Baltar, really. There's no real analogue for either character. Lando would probably be more like Badger (if Badger wasn't a villain) --or possibly a male counterpart to Inara.

There's nothing like Jayne in Star Wars. Except possibly Chewbacca's more combative/"thinking with his stomach" side, though Chewie's obsessive loyalty and insight make him more a match for Zoe.

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

Most I have issue w/ is Jayne = Lando / Baltar

While there is the common thread of " do what ya gotta do for No 1", Jayne does have sense of decency - when he's caught. Lando and Jayne at least try to make amends, for the right reasons. Not seein' it with Baltar. Maybe I'm forgetting the old school version ?

Kayle = R2/Muffet

LOL !!

It is a technical term: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BridgeBunnies

Male bridge bunnies are by no means unheard of. Fair's fair, after all.

You post interesting thread topics anyhow, but I thought this time you took the process and subject to a higher level. If that's just "fluff" for you, then I'm an amoeba. Thanks

It started out high-concept, but as I explored the analogous character qualities, it started to come apart just a bit, but the original idea was sound, I believe.

Gonna have to switch some genders for the equation though, unless perhaps we chose another crew in place of the original series. TNG perhaps or my favorite, DS9?

Just watching deleted scenes from the old BSG, and guess what? Originally, before ABC wanted an ongoing series, Serena had a sickness that was going to kill her soon... sound familiar?
Can this be just a coincidence??

Holy Frack.

You posted that a few years ago. I clearly remember that because of my boundless knowledge of the orignal Galactica. Yes Serenity, with Twilight Zone veteran Barry Nelson as Bogan, Serenity's most distinguished citizen who cons Starbuck into becoming Sheriff when he antes up the gold law badge in the card game. Was a pretty good episode with Brett Somers (Jack Klugman's wife) providing some great comic relief as she tried unsuccessfully to romance Adama.

Starbuck's successor Sheriff Nogow

Did you know that Serenity's Sheriff who dies in the first attack was Rance Howard, Ron's dad?

This guy....Eric Server as Bogan's pal Dipper

You can pick most ensembles down into character archetypes, so no, not much of a shocker. Same way you can apply all the standard western archetypes to our BDHs.

For the hell of it, factor in the crew of the Betty from Alien: Resurrection or the Scoobies.

Most enlightening, Jong!

@ Story- yeah, it's reasonable. Still...
I think Joss had a fixation with Galactica. It's just all too coincidental, the frackin' expletives, the name Serenity, the 'socialator' (companion), the fact that Joss has stated that the new BSG was the best show on TV, and so on.
