I'm new to Firefly so if what I have to say has been said before by others please forgive me. I was flipping through channels and watched the movie Serenity. I thought it was ok because I found it hard to follow. The movie was advertised as based on the Firefly series so I searched to see if any episodes were coming on any time soon. As luck would have it I saw that a channel called Ovation was showing all of the series episodes with three episodes a night. I watched all 14 episodes and was left wanting more. And I also watched Serenity again and found it much better after watching the series (except for the parts where Book & Wash get killed). I didn't know this site existed or I would have purchased the DVD set through here Target has the complete series on DVD this week for $14.99). I bought the set and have watched every episode three times in the past week. I then did research as to why the series isn't still onTV.

Leave it to Fox to screw up a good thing!! I hate that network and never watch anything on it. I can't believe ( wait, I guess I can) those idiots showed the episodes out of order. I can see how that would confuse people and maybe lose some audience. I also read where you diehard fans tried to prevent the show from being canceled or moved to the UPN network and how you lobbied for the Serenity movie to be made. I applaud your hard work and effort!!

Now like I said before, I am new to this. I have never blogged, Twittered, chatted or whatever else there is online these days (I'm 50 and grew up with 3 channels and UHF if you had the right antenae). I was just wondering if the Sy-Fy channel was approached to continue Firefly (under this name or changed to another if Fox still owns the rights)? I started watching Warehouse 13 and Haven on Sy-Fy and then began watching Eureka. If any of you watch Sy-Fy when Warehouse 13 is on with new episodes, the network advertised that over 3 million viewers watch the show. As I understand it, Fox canceled Firefly because it "only" had around 4.7 million viewers. If the Sy-Fy channel is advertising Warehouse 13 as a hit show on their network, what would they say to 4.7 million viewers ( or more as people like me view the show and become an immediate fan? I also have another thought. Oprah Winfrey just started her own network (OWN) and is advertising looking for new talent. With the fan base Firefly currently boasts, I would wager that she might be interested in a series with the millions of viewers Firefly will have, especially showing the episodes in their intended order. I read where Joss envisioned the series to span seven years. Wouldn't that be great to be able to see the next six years worth of episodes!!

SEGFAULT

Welcome to Firefly fandom, Tigger!

I had your reaction when I belatedly caught up on the show. I personally feel that it is Whedon's best effort on television. Great premise, script, cast, you name it. Realizing that there were going to be no more stories told in "the 'verse" was a downer.

However, I think at this point, I'm kind of glad we have the little snapshot of brilliance that the series turned out to be. Pretty much every episode knocked it out of the park, and not only is that very rare for a television series, I don't think it was a sustainable pace.

"Leave 'em wanting more," indeed!

Firefly, along with Dr. Horrible, are the two series that I think Joss Whedon got right from the very beginning. Dollhouse had pacing issues and focused on a format that didn't work at first, and I hear it took Buffy two seasons to hit it's stride.

I think for that reason, Firefly may have been one of the rare stories that are truly inspired. There are some stories and characters that just speak to large numbers of people, that have a truth in them that resonates somewhere inside. It's these stories that develop fierce and loyal followings. It's the basis behind movies that become a popular phenomenon, and while Firefly is something that happened on a smaller scale, for those who feel it, it appears to be more magnetic.

In it's way, it lives on. Reportedly both the actors and the writers still have a fondness for it, or so they say, and most of them say if it ever came back they'd rally to it. Ten years is a long time to hold on to that, especially since most of them are asked about Firefly in just about every interview, but I like to think they still mean it.

The lack of six more seasons is a shame. While in any series of works there's bound to be episodes that come up short compared to others, my thinking is the story setting and characters had enough potential that we wouldn't see any decline in quality compared to some of the existing weaker episodes. And since most of the existing episodes can be considered really good, if not outright exceptional, even the the weaker episodes would probably still be enjoyable in their own right.

(The pilot episode, Our Mrs. Reynolds, Jaynestown, Out of Gas, Ariel, and Objects in Space are generally touted as fan favourites, with Out of Gas and Objects in Space being stand out even among those).

As for rights, yeah, Fox still owns them, but the rights end this year... So they've been going on a lawsuit spree against fans. I guess it's to be expected. Maybe they're hoping to reopen the deal or something. If Avengers turns out any good. Maybe.

ZEEK

Glad to hear the show is still finding new viewers. I've always felt that if anyone just give the series a chance that they'll find something to love about it. It's just getting people to give the series a chance that's a little more difficult than expected.

If you're desperate for some more Firefly goodness you can check out the comic books that have been released. There's a handful of them now. Even one that cover's Book's back story (at least that's what I hear...I haven't gotten around to reading it yet). I'm not a big comic book fan. They are just too short for my liking. Beggars can't be choosers though.

Where did the information that Fox's rights to Firefly end 2012 come from? I've only ever heard it as a popularly held opinion and not from any actual source.
