On February 25, not long after the this campaign sort of went viral, Nathan Fillion Tweeted this:

It's beautiful to dream of more Firefly, but PLEASE DON'T SEND ANY MONEY. Just keep being great Browncoats, which you are!

He's not saying stop the Campaign, just don't send him any money. Awfully decent of him.

On Feb 17, 2011 - as posted here on FFF.net - in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Nathan Fillion said: "If I got $300 million from the California Lottery, the first thing I would do is buy the rights to Firefly, make it on my own, and distribute it on the Internet."

"Well, let's get the Captain his money!"

No, I'm not the one initiating this little campaign, just supporting the industrious mighty few who are.

Geeks of Doom are also perpetuating the momentum:

Paging Storymark. Did anyone take that interview too seriously now?

This is a horrible campaign. I don't think Nathan would want to be involved with this in any way. Too many expectations and potential problems. You want to do this all in good fun then make it a "mail Nathan lottery tickets" game. Even that might not go over so well with him.

*sigh* the more I've heard WE really didn't do much of anything. Joss and Mary Parent did the improbable. Sure our support probably didn't hurt, but it doesn't seem like it did a whole lot. When it really mattered we failed. We failed when Firefly was on the air and we failed when Serenity was in theaters. We done appear to be very mighty.

I don't want people to stop trying. I just think a little honesty is fair too.

To be fair...I'm sure if Nathan managed to somehow raise 300mil, he'd probably set up a charity with it or something.

Browncoats haven't even managed to raise that much for Equality Now, which, while it's not Firefly, is certainly a more worthy cause.

I do like the lottery tickets idea though :)

It wasn't $50 million. At $50 million, they can make another RoboCop movie. It was more like $56,000 or something in that range.

Since we're on the subject. The rights to Firefly and Serenity are different, are they not? 'Firefly' is owned by FOX and 'Serenity' is owned by Universal. It's probably more realistic to raise money for a 'Serenity' sequel.

Yes, but only half the fans liked Serenity. I still say that it isn't as good as the series, and I saw it 7 times.

Did you know that a bronze funerary casket with a life-size bust of the deceased would cost $100,000? A friend of mine works at a funeral home. He told us about it.

*EDIT*

Okay, I looked it up. Its $50,000. So not so reputable. But this is a guy who thought very seriously about buying a fully operational Dalek so he could tool around London as The Roaming Dalek. I really should have considered the source.

Well, that's understandable, and wise.

On Twitter, Nathan asked @nerdist Chris Hardwick to do a podcast - someone on Facebook hypothesizes that Nathan might answer all this there. Chris suggested Sunday at Noon.

Half? Where are you getting that? I've only met a handful of people who didn't like the movie and I've encountered some who liked the movie but not the show. I'm with you that the series was better, but honestly, I'd be happy with anything more, even gorram webisodes. Comic books just aren't doin' it for me.

Personal experience, fans I talk to, the cast I RP with. Actually, no, that's wrong. Everyone I RP with watched the movie but didn't care for it, or thought it could have been better.

Of the Browncoats who are recruited according to the order of the DVDs and then the movie find the movie extremely disappointing.

I'm one of them, and I fought for it; I saw two pre-screenings in the theater, one of them with Ron Glass, and my tagline is a quote from the movie. So between you and me, you could be the one that liked it, I'm the one who didn't - that's half right there.

Most of the time, though, even those half who don't like it will still watch it. Because it's all we have. How is that fair?

I like the comics as well. The artwork has been phenomenal and the story, of course, exceptional. It's not the same as hearing the voices, feeling the raw raggedy edge of the Black again.

I recruited my niece recently. She finished and kept asking me, "Why was this cancelled again?"

People do very strange things, don't they?

Fans brought back Doctor Who by pledging £5 - £10 per person. Doctor Who had 26 YEARS, rather than 13 excellent episodes and a movie that didn't make me feel any better about cancellation.

This whole idea is from an interview. This is another case of people getting worked up over nothing. Hell if I won the lottery I'd buy the rights too. I'm not staying awake pondering that one though. I loved Firefly and almost loved Serenity. Like anything in life you loved and lost... you need to move on.

"Move on" doesn't always mean drop like a hot potato, does it? I know what moving on means, and it doesn't mean setting it aside entirely. It means remembering and bringing what you learned from it into your every day life.

Keep believing Channin! Don't get jaded or 'move on.'

I'm with you and I'll draw their fire with this next statement while you keep the hope alive.

Here goes, have at me you blaggards!

I didn't like the Buffyfied Firefly they called Serenity.

There I said it!

I don't think it was terrible but it lacked the 'character' of Firefly. Yeah the characters were the same, the ship was the same, even the 'verse was the same but they were characitures of the originals.

Granted todays movie going audience is not an easy atmosphere to make money in. Look at the majority of the movies that are making money for proof. Look at the series on TV that last. What do they have in common? No story, no intelligence just flash and pretties. There are exceptions. Firefly was an exception and is worth fighting for.

We've become a society of crows and sheep.

Stand out of the flock.

Good gorram! Whatever happened to "We hold! We hold 'til the Captain gets back!"????

The last time I checked, we are Browncoats, not Purplebellies. I've been a fan since the very beginning. Hell, I was a fan when I saw the previews for the show, before it even aired! I will hold, and I will keep hope alive. There's no point in trying to bring down the rest of us just because you've given up.

This kind of detachment from reality is exactly the type of thing I think should be avoided. That's a line from a movie. It's just a work of fiction. Purple bellies are also fictional. Just like the chances this campaign will work.

It just doesn't seem healthy to me to be getting to worked up over something like this. If people want to have an open honest discussion about it then that's cool. Throwing out a bunch of hype and getting people excited over nothing but a website just doesn't sit well with me.

Sure it's fiction. No-one says it's reality. Want quasi reality go watch Jersey Shore. Yes people are really that stupid and society and today's media encourage it.

What's having a little hope hurt? What's it cost? Nothing.

Things don't get changed by sitting back and giving up.

The definition of fan is: An ardent devotee; an enthusiast.

Not sensing a whole lot of enthusiasm for some. And before anyone goes spouting off about rabid fandom, all Channin was doing was bringing this to our attention.

She had hope. So sue her. If it doesn't happen, oh well, we'll wait for the next rumour and hope that this time it'll stick. We all realize the chances may be slim, but the fact that it is still being talked about be the actors and creators...

Not interested in having hope or seeing someone else have a little hope, don't read. No-one is forcing.

An appropriate adult answer is, "Here's hoping, probably won't but still."

Yeesh...

The website itself is over the top. It was created in a matter of a day from an off the cuff comment in an interview. Nathan is great at pandering to the fans. That's why so many of them love him so much. It doesn't mean that everything he says is 100% serious.

This whole "we've done the impossible and that makes us mighty" thing is also something that gets old after a while. People on these very boards have pointed out how little the fans have actually done. It's basically a big lie at this point.

All I'm saying is that we should try to stick to the truth as best we can. It makes browncoats look a lot more mature and rational IMO.

This is an open and honest discussion by "people" aka Browncoats who are very passionate about this very subject. The fact that we happen to use Firefly lingo to express it is just fun, that's all.

You can understand the difference between hypothetical questions and questions based in reality, right? If not this whole mix up might be easier to explain.

And if it turns out it is misleading or malicious in anyway, I will be the first to say so. In ALL CAPS on each and every venue I've already posted my support. There will be fire, and there will be brimstone. You can rely upon that.

What you should reconsider, though, is the idea that Nathan wasn't kidding about doing an Internet series. He would be crazy to give up a gig as good as Castle, but he's also doing a voice-over for the Green Lantern. Doing Firefly on the Internet would be a side venture - a guy has to do something during the hiatus, right? Why not devote his time to regaining a role his still treasures?

Unless you're a personal friend of his and can say for a fact that he said to you, "No, I didn't mean that," then any doubts you have about his actions are as superfluous as my confidence in him. FYI, I haven't met him either, nor do I have the pleasure of calling him my friend. But then I give that title to a very distinct few.

So as much as you object to me being misleading, I object to your unfounded opinion about what a perfect if very visual stranger would or would not do.

Given that, and a healthy dose of reality, I can support this venture. I supported Serenity and I still believe that without the Browncoats there wouldn't have been a movie. I will even accept that we didn't do as much as we'd like to think, but without people to buy the tickets, we still wouldn't even be talking about it in these terms.

This is entirely hypothetical until some results start to show up. But nothing moves from hypothetical into reality in media genre fiction until the actual fans know about it and choose to do something.

For anybody who missed it, here's a few of the previous fan campaigns:

There's been FireflySeason2.com - now defunct - previous thread http://whedonesque.com/comments/9347 - which was registered in an address on Fox's lot with somebody claiming to be in contact with joss and the actors to get the rights off Fox. It was unrealistic balls.

There was 2009's MySerenitySequel.com - now defunct - with aimed to collect $50 x 400,000 people.. This is the same math as HelpNathanBuyFirefly.com are using, as it happens.

Also browncoatsriseagain.com - now defunct - previous thread http://whedonesque.com/comments/9309 - which was collecting money via Paypal until one of the producers talked them out of it and got the money returned.

There were also some things called Operation Blue Hands, Operation Full Burn etc.

New article:

Entertainment Weekly, February 21, 2011

http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/02/21/help-nathan-fillion-buy-firefly/

Conclusion of the article:
"BTW: Firefly ratings back in 2002? About a 2.9 in the adult demo. Which nowadays is considered a success — it’s what CSI and The Mentalist pulled this week. Not that the space-western would likely get the same numbers if on the air today when there’s so much more competition from cable, but it’s interesting to think about."

Makes you wonder why, doesn't it?

Well, I'm intrigued. Not ready to commit to pledging or anything yet, but as soon as Joss or Nathan is on board then so am I.

Okay, it may be a long shot. That doesn't mean it's not worth a try. Nobody ever accomplished anything by not bothering to try.

What really makes me wonder is what FOX replaced Firefly with. Did the next show in Firefly's timeslot do worse? And what then replaced the replacement? Did it also do worse than Firefly? If we knew about those replacements, we could rationally judge FOX based only upon business considerations and audience numbers. My non-rational judgment, without need for numbers, is FOX failed.

Yeah I think we just disagree about the whole thing.

I mean it's pretty clear that these mini-campaigns are doing damage to the fandom as it is. I mean Two's post just shows that these are getting lumped together as just the next in a list of similar failures. When the time comes that we really can make a difference we'll be the browncoats who cried wolf. Maybe this is the time it will work and here I am being jaded. Do we really want to breed feelings like that?

No, of course not.

But your way leaves no room whatsoever for hope. And if there is no hope, then Haken might just as well shut this site down.

We're going to have to agree to disagree, otherwise your arguments against mine are going to keep this thread at the top of the active thread chain forever. THEN where will "we" be?

Neither do I - but there are some of us... well, it doesn't hurt.

You don't want them to get all crotchety and jaded too, do you? Not everyone deals with realism so well. There was a significant time of bitterness when I would have been right beside you. I've gotten past that stage of my grieving, which for me is a pretty big deal.

Fastlane moved into the Friday night slot on Jan. 10, 2003, but it had aired nine episodes previously on Wednesdays before Firefly was canceled. It did get a full season of 22 eps but wasn't renewed after that. I don't recall what was in that time slot for the 2003-4 season.

EDIT: According to wikipedia, there were two sitcoms in that slot in the fall of '03, "Wanda at Large" and "Luis," followed by "Boston Public," then BP was moved to the earlier hour in early '04 when "Wonderfalls" premiered.

I'm skeptical too, but I suppose people can give if they like and hope if they like, we'll see what happens, and I certainly think Channain has the right to post it, passing on info for whoever is interested, sure its bizarre, but people can choose what to do with the information if its given, if it isn't given then people can't choose to do anything with it.

A Channain a chara,
I'm one of the half that dislikes the film, watched it twice, did my best with it, but still didn't really enjoy it. I think it has a few good concepts, a few good lines, but I don't really fancy it as a whole.

Proof enough for me. FOX ends Firefly with, what?, three episodes ready to air. That is exactly the same as throwing away money. Who but the top man could deliberately waste that much money? And then FOX replaces red hot Firefly with a string of soggy firecrackers. Who but Rupert Murdoch could getaway with those decisions without being fired? While looking for a hideous picture, I find an article that fits my unsubstantial theory that it's Rupert who killed Firefly. - “Is Rupert Murdoch Picking Shows for Fox?” - http://bit.ly/hQyjN0

If Joss Whedon needs a name for a villain on one of his shows, that name should be “Rupert.” Do you really want to pay Rupert Murdoch millions for the right to use the word Firefly? He would laugh at the irony and your gullibility. It's paying the kidnapper AFTER he killed the hostage.

I remain 100% convinced that at some point in the future there will be more Firefly. It may not include all or even any of our BDH's, but there will be a Firefly comeback someday. I've said the same thing about shows going back to Star Trek, and I've seen most of my favorites return in some form. I'm holdin'!

Well yeah I'd expect at some point in the future there will be someone who decides to remake Firefly. I don't really care about a remake if there are different actors and Joss isn't involved.

This is a horrible campaign. I don't think Nathan would want to be involved with this in any way. Too many expectations and potential problems. You want to do this all in good fun then make it a "mail Nathan lottery tickets" game. Even that might not go over so well with him.

Yeah, not a very well thought out campaign. But its nice to see the browncoats are so willing to step up, even if it's not particularly realistic.
