FIVEBYFIVE

Howdy there, guitarists! We already covered this topic a few times before, and here's the best we've come up with:

(NOTE: This is for the Acoustic Version Joss Plays on the bonus DVD.)

A____________G
Take my love, take my land.
D______________A______Em
Take me where I cannot stand.
C__________G
I don't care, I'm still free,
D_______________A________Em
You can't take the sky from me.

A___________G
Take me out to the black,
D_________________A______Em
tell them I ain't comin' back.
C_________________G
Burn the land and boil the sea,
D__________________A________Em
You can't take the sky from me.

G____________D____________C

A________________G
There's no place I can be
D_______________A___Em
since I found Serenity.
____C__________________G________D____A
But you can't take the sky from me

G____________D_____________C A

Hope that helps. I found it to be pretty accurate. I don't remember who came up with this (twern't me), so if you did, tell us so you can get credit.

***EDIT***
Anybody know "Hero Of Canton?" The chords from the TV ep are totally wrong, and I can't figure this song out for the life of me.

fivebyfive:

i found you chords for the acoustic version of the firefly theme very helpful, but the chords for the actual theme (posted above) were in the wrong key. For those of you who have been trying to play along, here is the corrected chords.

beginning
e
b
g
d
a 0 3p0
e 0h3

C Bb F C Gm
Eb Bb F C Gm

C Bb F C Gm
Eb Bb F C Gm

Eb Bb F

C Bb F C Gm
Eb Bb F C

That works when i play along to the dvd. also, easy suggestion: you can capo 3 and play fivebyfive's as written and the key will match up on the dvd.

Hope it helps

Here's a link to a transcription of the Firefly theme song. As for the discussion about the key... it will be necessary to tune your guitar down a whole step to play the song properly. Also, I have transcribed the fiddle solo too, so check out the link below:

Dsus2 = X X 0 2 3 0

Intro:

VERSE 1

Asus2_________Asus2/G
Take my love, take my land.
Dsus2/F#________Asus2__Em
Take me where I cannot stand.
C_____________G

Dsus2______________Asus2____Em
You can't take the sky from me.

VERSE 2

Asus2______________Asus2/G
Take me out to the black,
Dsus2/F#__________Asus2__Em
tell them I ain't comin' back.
C_________________G
Burn the land and boil the sea,
Dsus2______________Asus2____Em
You can't take the sky from me.

FIDDLE SOLO:
C____G____D

LAST VERSE:

Asus2____________Asus2/G
There's no place I can be
Dsus2/F#________Asus2__Em
since I found Sereni - ty.

Em*___Asus2

*Em... G... Not entirely sure. It's so short that you could use either one.

I've got a friend who's learning guitar. He wanted this tune and found this page. The thread's a bit old (2 years!!) but I thought I'd post my impression of the song.

Hope you like the arrangement. The key to making this work is the capo placed on the 3rd fret (guitar players: buy a capo and add it to your arsenal of musical equipement). Perhaps the original guitar is detuned 1 or so tones. But no detuning necessary to perform the song.

*Edit* - You'll notice a lot of "sus2" chords in the song (Asus2, etc.). I found that when I played a full major that it didn't quite match the feel of the performance. Dropping the 3rd down to a 2nd had the desired effect.

PERRY

Hi all,

New guy here, but I've been playing guitar for over 40 years.

Lots of intersting ideas here that I may have to try out. But the guitar need to be detuned a whole step if one wishes to play the opening riff (see below about the riff) and get the original sound/feel of the guitar part as originally recorded. Capo-ing up works, but produces a different sound/feel.

I intend to record a version of the Firefly Theme (maybe even an audio tutorial). For my purposes of recording I may very well capo up on one of the secondary tracks to produce interesting complimentary parts.

Playing the opening riff requires FURTHER detuning of the 6th string down a whole step. Which means you have to not play the 6th string during the other chords in the song. Now, that is only if you want to be able to play the whole thing with one guitar, which is easily do-able. Otherwise you'd need two guitars (either 2 people live, or record 2 tracks), to get the riff correct, yet be able to play all the chords using the 6th string.

I see no reason to capo up for this. Detuning your guitar is easy. Yes you have to re-tune the thing, but using a capo requires you to break out the tuner anyway, because of the nature of capos. So why not just get the guitar down to that nice, deep lusty sound and really *feel* the piece as you play it! I believe you'll be more satisfied if you do that. De-tuning should not be a mystery.

I hope this helps, and MANY THANKS to all the folks who have taken the time to help here, it is much appreciated!

Perry

Shiny!...i plink a bit and usually by ear...so thanks for all the great info on the Firefly theme... i will put it to good use...
i've been fooling with the tuning to get the right sound and Perry's post helped me there...thanks

Also, the version i like best is at the end of the movie, (sounds like a little National Steel on there). Anyone know the artist playing it, and how i can get an Mp3 download. It's not on the soundtrack.

Perry, thanks, I'm not a player, but your post was insightful nonetheless.

Please post or put up in the Blue Sun Room what you do with the piece and the tutorial, ok?

That being said, you're in line for a welcome.. all new folks get welcomed.....

Oh, and you get a browncoat of your own too!

*hands Perry a browncoat that surprisingly fits wonderfully *

Welcome to our shiny 'verse. Can't wait to hear what you play!

Someone posted the end of the film version at some point for download, hope they do it again when they see my bump, because I downloaded it. Wish I knew how to do such computery magic, but I don't.

Besides the original, this is my favorite version... I kinda like the twangy steel in there.

When I heard it the first time in the BDM, I cried.

That was mighty fast and awesome to have too.

My youngest brother likes to play guitar... I think I'm gonna introduce him to this thread and also the audio.

Thanks ChaosTheory!

Hi Followmal,

Thank you for the warm welcome! I love my new brown coat!

I have finished the tutorial and am posting a link to it in the Blue Sun Room.

The title will be something like "Firefly Theme Guitar Tutorial mp3."

Not too keen on doing tabs but I may work up an audio tutorial on the song right at the end of Serenity next.

Regards,

Perry
