Hi everyone, Im going to the CSTS show for the first time up here in Virginia and am putting together an outfit. Now I know a lot of people like to do Mal, but Im 5'4, and dont think I would look right for the part, anyways, it's been done and I know a lot of people will have that outfit anyways. So I want to do my own Browncoat version. Found a long suede browncoat 'm using, bought a replica colt off ebay and gunslingers belt/holster to use and already have some high boots with WW2 gaiters I'm also going to wear. But Im trying to decide on what other items to use including the shirt and maybe another gun.

I do like the older Western Bib shirts, which I could probally make out of a regular shirt and making the bib and sewing it on. Since the show has a Western theme. I might make a pair of the WW2 canvas suspenders also that Mal wears, but I have leather bracers also.

Any ideas you can throw at me to make my outfit complete?

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

An amazing thing about Firefly is that I can masquerade as my favorite character and only have to wear an Hawaiian shirt.

Yepper, that works really well...

As to a generic browncoat costume, you can get pretty close to Mal's trousers with just a pair of dungaree pants. Just add a 1 inch gros-grain ribbon, in darker brown, down the outside leg seam.
Tight, of course...

Yea thats a easy costume lol

I'll have to keep a lookout for those types of pants. I saw a pair of the brown/tan ones that were jeans at the thrift store, but I didn't pick them up . I am trying to decide what color I want to go with. Lots of people do the generic Mal red button up shirt but that's kinda plain. I do like when he wore the green pants and red shirt though so I might go for a darker type of pants. I can get the side ribbon for the pants if I decide to go for the tan type.

I'm just browsing through images to decide what shirt I want to do. I think I'll go to the fabric and thrift store today and see about making a bib shirt to see how it looks. I need to go and re-watch the movie to look at other background characters, I also just got the Browncoats: Redemption movie at Balticon, which was good. I wouldn't mind finding the old brown linen type shirt he wore in Serenity instead of the button down one.

Anything sort of western will work as a generic FF costume. A friend of mine wore an American Indian / western outfit for another film to a con last year and everyone thought she was dressed for Firefly.

Something to remember is that Mal's outfit was probably a military outfit, standard issue for all sergeants (or so I imagine), so "dressing up like Mal" is actually the same as dressing up like an Independents sergeant.

In other words, Mal didn't choose his outfit through the process of matching, but simply by virtue of becoming a soldier.

Or am I way off here?

I had always assumed that the Independent army, was a none-too-organized, none-too-standardized outfit, rather like the Confederate army of the US Civil War, or British regiments-- each unit having its own different uniform, all similar but each different.
Like, a bunch of guys on Shadow decided to go off and fight the war, the local gov't organized and equipped them, trained them, designated them The Oberlanders, they went, got hooked into Independent Command, fought at Dhu Khang and Serenity Valley, and so on.
SO the guys the next company over might have looked entirely different, except for some kind of Brown Coat, and all we ever see is the outfit Mal and Zoe are in.

But, of course, I could be totally wrong, just what I assumed.

It does hold an opening for people to make up their own costume, without having to conform to the captain tightpants standard.

That is unless you'd be from the same planet/region (I never understood why Firefly went for the whole "planet of hats" trope, or at least didn't subvert it) as Mal.

Yea Ill figure something out.

I'm trying to remake the Bib type shirt Mal is wearing at the Funeral at the end of Serenity. After going to multiple thrift stores and fabric stores, i failed in finding a shirt and fabric that both matched that grey so ended up making one out of red lol. But now I found the suspenders I have , fall right across the darn buttons of the shirt so i have to remake it.

I dont have a browncoat.. the one I got at the yard sale from the closing of the Shakespeare theater, which was being condemned.. was mold smelling and I had to toss it and thrift stores here do not sell long jackets in the summer grr.

but the green military pants I bought work perfect with the costume. I'll have to wear my black combat boots with my brown or green military gaiters since I dont have any brown boots. But it is coming along.
