I wonder sometimes just where the characters and situations would have gone had the show survived--there were so many possibilities! I like to speculate, for instance, on Jayne's family. His mother sent him the hat. It is conceivable that at some point Joss would have written an episode for her, and then made her a recurring character. Just imagine the woman! I see her as cross between Granny Clampett and Patience: mean and country, with plenty of character. And certainly not afraid of Jayne.

So! What's your favorite speculation? Any interesting types of planets/moons? Any peripheral characters? Family? Let's hear your shiny ideas.

In the final episode of season 7, the Serenity crew are the new crew of a starship going to Earth, the first in centuries. That starship, called the Shepherd Book, is so huge that Serenity is part of the cargo. The comic books for Season 8 can be flashbacks to how this all came to be. Season 9 comics are about what happens when they get to Earth. You know that nothing goes smoothly.

We did a full virtual second season (based on the Serenity movie, although there's tons of other stuff), in addition to rounding out the first season with a final seven episodes at www.stillflying.net.

We had plans for seasons Three through Seven, but our ambitious exceeded our free time. :)

I suspect we can see some elements of the potential future of Firefly in Dollhouse (which shares a number of plot and character themes, and, to some extent, seems almost like a clearinghouse for ideas Joss didn't get to use).

Somewhere I speculated on this before - but I can't locate where it is. Anyway I'll try and remember:

Zoe leaves Serenity to raise her and Wash's lil boy.

Simon and Kaylee are married and having children too. Simon is now a Doctor on a smaller world. Nothing fancy, no great money, but he and Kaylee are happy. River lives on the same world in the same town and is a teacher. Her nieces idolise her.

Inara sadly died many moons ago. Even after the crew's brave attempts at having Simon treat her at the finest hospital on Persephone. (Papers were forged, diplomats bribed and politicians blackmailed etc etc). He tried in vain to cure her, and Mal hunted high and low for the specialist toxicologist who's research could have proved vital in saving her, but it was all a lost cause. It was not meant to be. Inara died before Mal could make his return...

Jayne stuck by Mal. Their association became a true friendship. After Inara's death Mal was lost for a stint. So Jayne steadied the ship. Took care of Serenity.

When a new war broke. Mal found a new resolve. He operated as a freelance soldier. Took SERENITY to the farthest parts of the 'verse. Defied the odds and perturbed the Alliance no end. Finally during the Boundary conflict Mal and Jayne met their end, or so it's believed; when they were lured to a rendezvous that proved to be an alliance ambush. Trapped but defiant Mal and Jayne held off a two hundred man alliance onslaught, that had them pinned down for two days. Last that was heard, Mal and Jayne made a last ditch effort to break free....

Nothing was ever heard from the two men again and alliance veterans who were there on the day swear blind that no man could have made it out alive. However Mal and Jayne's bodies were never found....

... And every year on the anniversary of Wash's death, Zoe receives a tiny toy Dinosaur in the post, a gesture to Zoe, which Mal had started after Wash died.

(In between all this I always had the notion that Book's past would have tormented the crew for many years. Just what that was I haven't been able to figure out, but something not entirely pleasant that sees the crew lose Serenity for a time, and they have to try and take her back again.)

I love that story /\. :-)

I would like to see Jayne's back story be the most interesting and surprising. Something totally unexpected. I suggest he's been a merc for twenty years or so, but before that...?

If there was a royal or lordly family who were mostly massacred by fanatics 20 years ago.... One young [teenage] son manages to survive using his wits and cunning. Knows that if 'they' find him it'll mean death or worse. Changes his name, learns how to fight, invents a new person he can be. Acts mean, dumb and ornery to deflect further scrutiny. It's plausible.

Wow, Somambulist, I like it. I like that a new war will break out. But I would want to see Mal and Inara get together before she passes, or did you mean that was implied? Anyway, the "bodies never found" works great, since it leaves room for so much more. And that tiny dinosaur...sniffle. Really, I mean sniffle!

I envisioned another version of River and Simon's after Miranda life: River is working in the Alliance government on Ariel as a higher up, but she's really working for the people, so to speak, as a spy. Simon and Kaylee live on a little moon, much like you said, and they are in touch. Mal, who's been incommunicado for a while, contacts River out of the blue, he needs her help, and she is raring to go back out there. Drama, etc, ensues.

That is epic, Two. It would have to be because the Alliance needs them, much to its chagrin. I could see a scene with an Alliance military type, in which he snottily (is that even a word?) and reluctantly tells Mal that because of what they've got to go do, not sure what, the only ones who could handle what needs to be done once they get to Earth is the crew of Serenity. They've been a thorn in the Alliance side (presumably in seasons two through seven) for so long that now they're seen as worthy opponents by some.

And the trip out itself would be full of interesting cliff hangers and new characters, with everyone just getting along great! (not!)

And of course, even though Mal and crew have agreed to help, you know they would be finding ways to sabotage the Alliance the whole trip out.

Whew! Wasn't this your idea originally?

ZEEK

Well since Simon and Kaylee got together and River was getting better at the end of Serenity, somebody's gotta go. I think River would be safe cause Joss needs his super powered girl. So, I'm thinking either Simon or Kaylee would come down with a case of the PAX and go over to the reaver side of the force. If Kaylee then Simon would become obsessed with finding a cure and probably do something stupid and dangerous. If Simon then River might try to find a cure and probably do something stupid and dangerous.

Due to the no more babies policy Zoe would have a miscarriage. Just to add some more misery onto her plate. Really see her beaten and broken. It would give us a chance to explore a different side of Zoe and see if Mal could bring out his inspirational leadership side.

Inara would try to have a relationship with Mal. It would fail miserably. I don't think Mal would be able to put up with her work. She wouldn't be able to stand his constant jealousy.

Jayne needs something. Not sure what. Maybe some new recruit to the crew for him to clash with.

EC, here's another spin on that: for some reason Saffron has to be on the ship for a period of time, longer than the last time. She becomes, for all intents and purposes, a member of the crew. She has something Serenity needs, and Serenity has something she needs. There could be several episodes in which she makes their lives miserable until everything blows up and Mal and company win (because, naturally, Saffron would be sneaking around, planning a massive betrayal). I'm thinking that they deposit Saffie into Badger's waiting hands in the end.

Just throwing some random stuff out:

The writers said they considered adding Saffron to the cast eventually (possibly having her rent the other shuttle).

I think the comics establish that Zoe and Wash were going to have a daughter (FLOATOUT is, I believe the only post-SERENITY canon story at this point).

I always have to laugh when people have Simon and Kaylee living happily ever after. I assume they're not really familiar with the works of Joss Whedon. :) (Although, in fairness, even Mal's fanifc has them together).

Although we didn't see it, Joss had mentally established Jayne's family as blue collar. I don't know if I read this or extrapolated, but I think his father was a welder or steelworker, and I assume they lived in an urban area that was near enough to woods where Jayne could learn to shoot on the weekends. Joss said that his dream was to have Tommy Lee Jones play Jayne's dad.

Joss has said that his seven-year plan was vague but that, in the end, Blue Sun would be revealed as "the big bad" behind the scenes, so I think a Season Seven finale would have to involve some confrontation of some sort (again, I think we may see elements of "what might have been" in the final episodes of Dollhouse).

I wanted the Alliance to be more complex. For example, Beaumonde, the planet where Fanty and Mingo have their headquarters and River has her bar room brawl. I'd have Beaumonde be a planet that was neutral in the Unification War - it is Generalissimo Franco's Spain after WWII. The result is that nobody completely trusts Beaumonde, but the government is not controlled by the Alliance. If your planet on The Rim didn't go to war, it didn't sign a peace treaty giving sovereignty to the Alliance.

In the movie, I think Beaumonde was the most likely place where Serenity was rebuilt. Beaumonde will be Serenity's new smuggling headquarters. Eventually, Beaumonde is the planet that will send an Expedition to Earth. It certainly struck me as odd that the fat and lazy Alliance had never sent ships back to Earth. Where's their curiosity? Did the Alliance never do it because it's not profitable?

Can you see why Mal wants to be the Captain of a starship? Great way to get some distance from the Alliance.

There could be stories about espionage where the Alliance is spying on the building of starships! River gets to be a double crossing secret agent for both the Alliance & Beaumonde CIA.

Simon could work for interplanetary Doctors Without Borders, bringing modern medicine to the Rim, via Serenity. Constant conflict between Simon and Mal, with Doctors Without Borders paying the lease for Serenity and Mal running a smuggling operation with Simon as the cover story. Kaylee could be a starship designer/engineer and setup housekeeping with Simon. Inara could setup a House, too!

Now, that would work. I could see a troubled dad-son releationship. (Because, like you said, this is the universe of Joss Whedon we're talking about.)

Having Blue Sun emerge as the evil empire behind everything would add yet another layer of darkness to FF. And maybe that was where Joss was going to have the system-wide wave go out, revealing Blue Sun for what it was in the finale: the folks who destroyed planet Miranda and gave us those cuddly lil' Reavers...

(Although, in fairness, even Mal's fanifc has them together)

The first thing I thought when I read Mal waxing all poetic about the lives of his crew and passengers was "Mal's fanfic" too.

I think that story was more supposed to represent what Mal expects for the futures of his crew and passengers than what will really happen.

But wait'll we get a load of Kaylee and River's fanfics, because you just know they WRITE them, not just imagine them. I have a sneaking suspicion Kaylee is a het/yuri/yaoi/crack pairing fan, and writes fic that ship everyone on Serenity together indiscriminately and without qualification. In the case of Jayne, she probably even extends that to his guns... Though THAT ship may well be canon. :)

As for Simon Kaylee, yeah, Joss does like to mess with happy or innocent couples and break cuties everywhere. But, on the other hand, he let Victor and Sierra end up together in Dollhouse (and have a kid, then break up, then get back together), so just being happy together is not always a death sentence. But I'm sure happy ending is more like 1/10 chance versus tragedy at 9/10 chance.

I've always figured the seasons would be, Season 3 deals with the Academy a lot and they find out about Blue Sun's involvement in many sinister programs including the production of Pax... Which never stopped. Inara's illness becomes obvious, Zoe leaves to give birth and captain the Jet Wash for a while.

Season four, the last or second to last episode would be them infiltrating Blue Sun to disrupt Pax production. Inara's subplot probably gets resolved if they happen to find a cure while they're there, otherwise she dies in season four. If she lives Mal boots her off Serenity anyway because of the danger. Simon breaks up with Kaylee, probably for similar reasons.

Season five: When Blue Sun keeps going after them, the crew decides to go after Blue Sun once and for all.

Season six: In the economic and political instability after Blue Sun falls, an Anti-Alliance terrorist organization starts hitting soft targets. The crew manages to find out somehow that the resistance's next target is to take out Parliament and a good portion of Londinium's citizens. They find the Operative there, who has gone off the other deep end, and are captured by some of the other Academy students who joined the Operative. Zoe makes a big damn heroes moment and kills the Operative in revenge for Wash, but parliament blows up anyway.

In Season seven, everything goes wrong. Blue Sun and some members of Parliament had a contingency plan to take most of humanity out rather than allow civilization to fall entirely. Pax is released from terraforming equipment left on all populated worlds. The crew finds a cure for Pax by confronting some of the Alliance and Blue Sun remnants living high on the hog still. They sacrifice Serenity to crash into the walls of (now abandoned) Parliament and the Citadel, which controls the entire Cortex in the verse. They use the super computer to release a counteragent from all the worlds automated terraforming systems, ending the Pax threat and restoring people to normal. Then they shut down the Cortex because the Cortex was broadcasting some kind of mind control signal.

I also believe Dollhouse may have been a clearing house for Firefly ideas. :)

Now, that is interesting. Although I'd expect the Alliance to try to find a way to control everybody, treaty or no treaty, so the spying angle you mentioned would be a good way to do it.

Mal as starship captain...could be Mal finally coming into his own in a big wyay. It would be sad, bittersweet. Because all the chaos created by Mal's dissatisfaction and chosen lifestyle (seasons 1-7) would settle into the promise of a new, even better adventure. Seems a fitting ending to the series, since Mal triumphs.

Yes. Narrative causality demands that.

Also, Saffron and Inara need to be forced to work as a team at some stage.

As for endings (nb: this owes something to various other people's suggestions in this thread... and BSG... and Dollhouse...)

A new civil war ensues, and our BDHs spend a season or so fighting for the independents. Sadly, its a hopeless cause, the Alliance mounts a massive purge against the rebels. River disappears, and the rest of our surviving heroes, along with thousands of political prisoners and refugees are shipped to a labor camp on a remote, barely habitable moon on the fringes of the system, way beyond the range of most civilian ships. Our BDHs could break out, but there are no ships, nowhere to go, and they could only survive for a few days outside the camp.

All is looking grim until a massive spaceship enters orbit and a flotilla of landing craft descend, led by Serenity, piloted by River. She's found the last surviving colony ship, kept ready by the Blue Sun execs lest they need an escape route, and "borrowed" it. Action ensues as the BDHs lead the prison break and lead the prisoners to the landing craft. They escape to the colony ship, but in the chaos, Serenity is left stranded on the moon's surface.

Mal begins to plan his revenge on the Alliance but River discovers something in the ships computers - there is another star system with colonization potential. Its a 300 year trip, but they have cryocapsules for everybody and a hold full of terraforming equipment.

So, Mal leads the independents out into the blackest black, to build their own 'verse where everybody can be free. Fortunately, they have to swing round the sun to scoop fuel, otherwise they'd have had to sail off away from the sunset, and that just wouldn't do.

Some time later, a small group of dropouts and malcontents are scouting the rim of the 'verse for wreckage from the civil war to salvage, but they crash on a deserted moon when their engine fails, stranding them. Luckily, the signal they were investigating turns out to be an abandoned Firefly-class transport - easily repaired with parts from their old piece of junk and full of convenient nooks and crannies for "unofficial" cargo. A wonderful find - with the Alliance in turmoil after the financial collapse there's plenty of work for someone with a ship and a relaxed attitude to the law. Still, its a mystery why someone has painted flowers on all the walls, there's a frilly ballgown hanging up in the engine room and what looks like a plastic dinosaur jammed down the back of the pilot's seat...

Thanks TrainBandit. I wish I could remember my old post about this... (I'm sure I had something about them marooned on some planet for a stint...?)
It was implied that they established some kind of a relationship. I think a very awkward one, as a conventional relationship just doesn't fit them really.

River being recalled into action I must admit sounds like a very Joss thing. I reckon the chances of that were the show to carry on, most likely.

I don't think it's that we're not familar. It's just this is one aspect of Joss' work which I always find a bit trite. So for the purposes of this thread I'd contest that usual direction.

To me, the last season of Angel was bogged down with Wes and Fred's impending doom and when it eventually came I was thankful because finally the story could developed some legs.

Or maybe a woman who would at long last be the one who won't take any of his crap, a really tough browncoat girl or summat.

I toyed with the idea of Jayne developing an intense relationship with River. Not a physical one, but a protective one and it's when she is reclaimed by the alliance that his shift for caring happens. She is the catalyst that brings him around.

Maybe at this stage Simon is off SERENITY with Kaylee on that moon and River remains aboard...?

I don't think it's that we're not familar. It's just this is one aspect of Joss' work which I always find a bit trite. So for the purposes of this thread I'd contest that usual direction.

To me, the last season of Angel was bogged down with Wes and Fred's impending doom and when it eventually came I was thankful because finally the story could developed some legs.

I didn't know about Tommy Lee Jones being considered for Jayne's Dad. How awesome would that have been!

While it's fair to disagree with one of Whedon's common tropes, I doubt we would ever see a couple romantically linked for seven seasons of any Whedon show. Not enough drama in it. Great in real life. BORING in a TV show (even Wash/Zoe, the "good married couple" was designed with Wash fated to die before two or three seasons passed).

I also find it intriguing when people pick Simon and Kaylee as the couple to "draw the line"--They have their cute moments, but they're really a pretty terrible couple, with very little in common (and not in a good "opposites attract" way, but in a dysfunctional "our goals, agendas, and life experiences are so different that we're never going to do anything but hurt each other in the long-run" way).

Oh I doubt it too Gwek, but this is a little bit of fun. If you attach boundaries to this kind of speculating then you'll render the post redundant. Having these 'flights of fancy' is the joy in a queation like this. I find it fascinating to read peoples ideas. I'm not really interested in how accurate people are in predicting what Joss might have done in the future.

I would say it's a pity you think that a working relationship on TV would be boring. With clever writing this kind of thing should be possible. Perhaps mainstream TV needs to challenge itself more.

Byte, I think even Kaylee has a moral standard, so I don't know that she would imagine as many dirty ships as you for some reason think. Sure the idea would occur to her, things occur to most people, but I don' think she'd ever write certain ones down if they were too nasty. Sure she'd love anything where Mal and Inara get together, and some other matchups, she might even think about samesex matchups, but there are some things that even lil' Kaylee wouldn't entertain too much.

Gwek, are you talking about what's called Virtual Firefly? Because I actually like what I've seen of that so far, someone is revamping it into novel form elsewhere and I'm thoroughly enjoying it in all actuality.

I'm just thankful for fanfic, that way the verse can continue on in an infinite number of ways and I can read the ones I like and ignore the ones I don't like. Its great and everyone wins and no one is let down.

I don't imagine them being nasty, more like silly. Though the realistic pairings she might decide to add some detail.

>_> I just think we see so many times in the series and the movie that she's a little shameless, and not hung up at all about anything like this. There's no reason to think she WOULDN'T write crazy fanfic pairings.

To quote Jayne from the movie, "Shepherd once told me; if you can't do something smart, do something right." That and his witnessing River the Reaver hunter at the end have ALREADY demonstrated that he's family with the crew.

Really? I thought they were only together for like 2 episodes. There might have been some episodes where there were scenes where one or the other pinned for the other. Beyond that I don't think it took up much screen time.

I agree. If you had a happily married couple, you could find plenty of drama in it: If you love someone, then any danger to them (such as a disappearance, injury, arrest, etc.), could put us all on the edge of our seats. Not to mention adding kids into the mix, and all the danger they could encounter.

I am pleased. There's some cool creatvie energy out there. And someone else said here that the beauty of fan fic is getting so see the 'verse continue, have a good time, and (I may be adding this part ) be as creative as they want.

Okay, I have a question. I've looked all over this site and can't find "Mal's (or Kaylee's, or River's) fan fic. What/where is it? Appreciate the info.

Short story from Mal's POV written in the Still Flying companion.

We joke that Mal writes fanfic, because he's imagining what his crew's lives will be like in twenty years. He's rather creative about it, too.

I'm not refering to when they were together as a couple but about the huge lead up to them getting together. This had really been in place since season three. By the time season five came along the same patter between Wes and Fred was old. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying I hated it, but it would just weigh down the show. It was a subplot in which the conclusions just appeared so obvious and yet there it was every episode being given so much attention.

I just much prefered that season when the relationship was done with.

Thing is a show like SUPERNATURAL is essentially a married couple. Just not in the conventional sense. But the dynamic of the two brothers struggling through thier lives (such as they are) and overcoming obstacles together is in essence akin to a marriage. I would even suggest that were the two characters of that show a married couple instead of brothers, that there would possibly have been even greater scope within the stories.

But I think it's an angle that TV struggles to engage with. Which is a pity

I absolutely agree that there would be more drama, etc, possible.

I think having the protagonists be brothers is more accepted, in that two guys running around getting into trouble is such a typical scenario that one would almost expect big mischief to ensue as a matter of course.

Supernatural tackles some culturally entrenched stuff, religous wise, and the story has gotten so edgy that to add a marriage and all its traditions/beliefs/sensitive issues into the slurry of stuff that happens in that show might just be too much. I mean, the whole idea of these ancient biblical stories/prophecies being revealed as something as mundane as an old fued within a family! I am not disrespecting anyone's faith, but Supernatural spun out a new interpretation of the bible that some people might get pretty upset over. I mean, all those other dieities sitting around in that hotel meeting room carping about the snobby Christian dieties, thinking they're "the only ones"!! It was a delightful surprise, and funny, imho.
