There is a project up on Rockethub trying to raise money to create a Serenity-based webseries. I'd urge everyone to spread the word and maybe donate some money so we can keep projects like this alive! Browncoats unite!

Ok, I'm an idiot- what do they mean by "webseries"? Like a comic strip type deal, or a CGI type deal??

Dong ma?
No, not really...

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Nothing will happen with that as long as FOX and/or Universal have rights to the property. This has to be at least the fifth attempt by people to collect money for something they'll never have the opportunity to produce.

It seems connected to help nathan buy firefly. I think that if you want people to help, you should probably change the name. a non-unique name that doesn't pull you up on a search is going to take marketing to promote, and no one wants to pay for you to market it.

Also, Gordon has a point. Without the rights it can't be called firefly.

Even Universal didn't have the rights to the name Firefly. That word was not used once in the BDM.

Sadly, it won't be called Firefly. That's one thing we can't do. That's why it is called "Those who came before", in Honour of the Serenity comic "Those Left Behind"

It is also not connected to Help Nathan Fillion buy Firefly. This is an actual attempt to create a unique piece of work that will be free from TV or Movie restrictions.

lol. Our best bet is to somehow contact Joss Whedon and ask him if we can use the term Serenity before the title.

Something like

Serenity: Those who came before.

Wellll...yes and no.

Those who have tried to collect money and succeeded are the ones who kept their expectations in line with their capabilities.

I would point to my friend's short film "cache".
He raised about fifteen hundred dollars
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/522005770/firefly-fan-film
to make this eight minute short:
vimeo.com/27507965
(For some reason I can't get the link to copy and paste or even type out.
So, add a www. to the address above, and that will link to the short film on vimeo.)

The last attempt I saw that failed was a person with few resources trying to raise $50,000 to make a fan film.
Browncoats:Redemption raised a ton of money, but they put forth a lot, if not most, of the production money themselves.
Likewise the, still-in-post-production, "Into The Black" raised little and paid the bulk of their costs.

My guess would be $1,000 is probably the most that an un-proven production group could expect to solicit.

I placed 5000 dollars as the most we would need, I don't expect to raise that much, but any amount helps.

We will be putting forth money for everything we need to make the first Promo video. We hope to show that with that Promo video, that we can make something amazing.

THAT will really determine your success in fundraising.
If people see something intriguing and well made,
they are more likely to contribute to "keep it comin'"

Don't forget to see if there is any local Browncoat aid you can enlist.
Costumes, props and volunteer labor can all add to the production values.

Once you have something tangible to show,
(even if just pre-production photos)
I'll be happy to post 'em on my Firefly Fan Film Thread:

Also, the first resin cast failed. I... measured the second ingredient wrongly. Luckily, the mould itself was not harmed.

I don't believe that there is anything canon concerning money prior to the War, but there's no shortage of fan currency that's pre-war, wartime and post war.

The Ghost in the Shell pistol I've got looks simple enough to be carried hidden.

The Aliens Resurrection Pistol is really because it looks futuristic, but still has a recognized gun shape.

And the Timecop gun, well I just think that one looks quite cool and would work nicely.

Thanks for the amazing site with the money. That'll be quite useful!

I'm not sure that was a rights thing as they did refer to Serenity as a Firefly class ship in the deleted scene with The Operative on board his ship when they identify Mal.

And sadly you can't do a web series that would do justice to the series without a serious budget.

Hello Bronnen, glad to see you here!

I usually don’t comment on threads like this, but I will in this case.

I think it’s very admirable doing what you’re doing. But I do believe that you’ll have to put your product “out there” first to get donations to help pay for cost. The Firefly tv series has tons of fans, and it’s growing by leaps and bounds every day.

The Science Channel ( not to be confused with the Sy/Fy channel) runs FF marathons all the time, and I think they have been a big help in bringing this show we love to the masses. I love those folk! Firefly rule, by F*>< ends this year I think, and I curse those money-hungry bastards for what they did. They claim it was about money, but I think it was something else. Just the power of being able to cancel a show because they could!

Nathan Fillion, tv star, is the most loyal Browncoat you’ll ever run across.(even more’n Joss). I think his mom wrapped him in a nice warm, brown blanket as an infant. I enjoy watching every one of those cast members still, and I follow their careers loyally.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. Unless you know someone with deep pockets (private funding), asking for dough is likely not the way to get the ball rolling. You’ll likely have to tally up some hard evidence that you are a true fan before moneys will see it’s way to you. Sorry, just a hard fact.

Anyway, good luck, and if you’ve got the gumption to see this through I’ll back you as much as I can!

Let me give you some advise from someone who's doing basically the same thing you're trying to do.

Here's the thing about, well, pretty much any endeavor. There are three things to choose from: Cheap, Fast, and Good. You only get two. If you want it cheap and fast, it won't be any good. If you want it fast and good, it ain't going to be cheap. So the only thing left for us independent film makers is cheap and good. Which means fast is out of the question.

Believe me, I know. I've been working on Freedom for a year and a half now. I managed to drum up a few hundred dollars from people, but that was it. The rest of the budget has been out of my own pocket, much to my wife's dismay.

Here's the thing, though. Look at The Guild. Their first season was incredibly low budget, but they put out consistent and entertaining episodes, so they built up an audience. They got themselves some sponsors, and now they can afford to keep going. Be awesome. Give us characters we care about, and stories that we follow all the way to the end. People will stand up and notice.

The Firefly fan film community is pretty tight knit. If you need some help or some guidance, we're here. Just ask.

"Always be yourself. Unless You suck." - Joss Whedon

Yeah, right now we are applying to the government for a original film grant. There are no open grants going on at the moment, but when there is, we are applying.

I know it's going to take time and effort, all of us do. Right now our goal is to create the sets, get the cast, and create a 5 minute short to show people that we have what it takes, within a year. After that we're just going to keep plugging away at it.

All of us know that the first fundraising attempt isn't going to get much, but every dollar helps, literally, so we put it up anyway.

Thank you for all the support though, it really give me hope!

A former student of mine, whom I introduced to Firefly, is launching his own Firefly-esque web series this month. It's not associated with Firefly/Serenity per se, but seems to be inspired a fair bit by it, though they seem to be going for more of a sketch comedy vibe, using space cowboys as their characters.

I haven't responded on the FFF.net in a while but I am glad I came back here today. A friend of mine just got off the production of Iron Sky for the past year and a half. He was doing a lot of the CG work you see on that. Okay, now to my point.

Check out ironsky.net and see what they were doing to get funding for there film. They raised a butt load of money through various sources. Timo, the Director even has a blog and an article (I will try to find it) about funding for the movie. Timo is a nice guy and e-mailing him or any of the other producers can help you. IT doesn't hurt to try.

A couple of key things: Trying to get funding for your movie is similar to opening a business. If you are serious about it, you will have a plan on how the investors will reap some reward from the non-profit webseries. I.E. - Film festivals and fan recognition at one of the Conventions.

Crowd funding websites and also the "wreck-a-movie" website is a good place to start. Every one knows that they won;t see their money again, only a kick ass webseries or movie in the end. That makes people happy a lot of times.

Make sure you have a story and a treatment before you move forward with this. I create storyboards and animatics at least twice a month i my department for investors or upper studio management. Fun, but gets old real quick when the cheese factor gets involved.

Firefly/Serenity is not a taboo subject around the studio but as stated before, many have tried and failed. For some odd reason the studios don't want to let it go.

I hope you succeed and I hope I can help at some point. Hey, if you need a storyboard artist (the magician who makes the blueprint) just let me know.

This site may or may not help you: http://www.cifvf.ca/English/cifvf_about.html

Good Luck.
