My goodness, Slaughter is psychotic!

I've only caught one Firefly reference (other than the brown coat) so far, and now I can't even remember what that one was.

What did I miss? It was mentioned in interviews there were several references in the show, but I just didn't catch them, if they were there...

I think there were several that were right on the verge of being Firefly references. I’m thinking that since “Castle” has such a large and devoted browncoat following at times dialogue in the show might seem to be related to Firefly when maybe it was not intended.

That being said I’ll list three that I thought were pretty obvious.

1) Castle playing with a dinosaur at the very beginning ( had me laughing out loud right out of the gate)
2) Richard Castle & Detective Slaughter share a browncoat ( another reference that couldn’t be denied)
3) Detective Slaughter = Jayne Cobb (Jayne Slauobb)

Also Slaughter seems to speak many lines that are near, or pretty darn close to Firefly quotes that had my ears perking. Castle does the same.

Nathan & Adam are the browniest browncoats there ever were.

At the end, when the episode is over, Nathan and Martin Downey Jr. tout Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers” super cool!

Yeah, there were a few times where lines seemed close to something that was said on Firefly, but not those words. I wish there had been a few obvious ones though.

I forgot about the playing at the beginning! That had to be a nod. I laughed, but just because it was funny.

I did get a real kick out of the Avengers plug.

Some possible additional nods: (1) Castle is tricked into thinking someone died, only to have it revealed that he's the butt of a joke ("That's not funny!"), even calling into question the sanity of the joke's perpetrator. Got dished back what Mal served to Simon.

(2) At 24:03 and beyond. Slaughter offers something to Castle to drink, "That'll get you flyin' right." Castle replies with a wistful look, "Nope, it's not gonna do anything to turn back time." (sniff... still flyin' cap'n?)

(3) 13:20, witness says, "He screwed up another job last week. Abandoned a truck full of stolen medical equipment on the F.D.R. after he ran out of gas." XD

I thought when Castle's mother came in when he was playing with the dinosaur and said "What are you playing at??" it reminded me of "KAYLEE! What in the sphinter of hell are you playing at???!" but yanno, cleaner...

Also, was this episode purchased at "Stereotypes R Us" or WHAT??

Last week with the Aussie/Scot...now IRA, Mexican Cartel, Jamaican Rasta'a... They needed to work in a sleeper cell just to be completely well-rounded I think they were slightly trying to say some cops are crazier than the rest of the thugs out there, but...geez.

Americans are SO FREAKING STUUUUPID! I mean, it's fun...but It just felt like an hour long *FACEPALM.

Ah #2 totally went over my head when it happened. That had to be one!

and I didn't really hear #3, so that's how I missed that one.

I recorded the show last night so I should probably watch it again!

Well, one thing I will give Castle credit for, is that it tends to give races, religions, cultures, and subcultures a fair shake. They never make it about "oh, this kid dresses up like a were-wolf sometimes and this guy goes to see a dominatrix. DEVIANCY! They're the killer because they have messed up appetites!"

The same can't be said for SOME crime drams... ¬_¬

I was pretty disappointed in the Firefly references (if there were any). Everything mentioned seems like basically pulling stuff we want to see out of normal dialogue.

I thought it would have been so easy to put some good stuff out there without having any negative impact on people that don't know what Firefly is.

- Why not just have Slaughter say "I really like that brown coat" to Castle rather than just "coat"?
- Slaughter could have called his gun Vira
- When Slaughter gave Castle the gun, he could have said "it's my very favorite gun".

All of those would have been really obvious (and awesome) to Firefly fans without disrupting the normal view at all.

Pretty sure they thought we'd be squee-ing our pants off just that they were together, so they didn't overkill with bluntness, which they coulda done, and all day long. The whole thing was just kinda so surreal, I didn't have time to squee a lot. There was soo much else going on!

Maybe I'm reaching but when Slaughter had the Jamacian kid in the back of the garbage truck and was slowly cycling it I was reminded of the episode where Mal trapped Jayne in the airlock with it cracked open.

I like the fact that unlike on Bones where Adam's character was killed off, here Slaughter is still out there. Who knows?

I have a theory:

When Slaughter took Castle's coat I thought it might become a reference if they'd mentioned that is was brown but they didn't so I put it down to me looking to hard for something and so I just watched the show. Reading some of the other possible references and most people's uncertainty about if they are genuine references or not led me to this:

We know the writers are Firefly fans and have used several references before. With both Nathan and Adam on the show they know that fans would be eagerly watching for any references and little in-jokes. And then eagerly posting about them online after the show.
I think they deliberately made subtle, almost references, rather than obvious ones, so that they couldn't be definitely stated as being there. They'd start to lead us towards something and change it or hide it or just not go there.
I think they did it to (jokingly) wind all the fans up and then read about in various forums.

Just my quickly depreciating two cents.

In an interview I read before the show, both Adam and Nathan said there were Firefly references scattered throughout, but they wanted to put others in but decided against it because they felt it would be too much.

Still, I thought there would be at least SOME obvious line that the two of them would share that would point to their past relationship.

Well, I enjoyed that Castle episode more than I have enjoyed any for a while, and it was mostly to do with Adam and Nathan working together and dominating the screen. The folks above have already pointed out a lot of the references. Here are the ones I caught. Some of them...maybe it's just me seeing Firefly references in ordinary dialog, but still... :-)

Dinosaur play (Castle doing voices in Wash's style)

"Unless that’s a problem" ...like Book and Kaylee in Serenity Pilot

Slaughter is wearing a sorta military-ish olive drab coat -- in the style of Jayne in several episodes

Castle wearing a brown coat. (!!!)

Castle holds out hand for shaking and Slaughter ignores it (Mal with the Councilor’s body guard, War Stories)

"Any friend of the mayor is a friend of mine" (like Mal and Inara in Heart of Gold, although I wouldn't have minded a "business-like relationship")

Brian (the Westie) barges through Castle like Jayne does with Simon in …I forgot which episode. Maybe it's more than once.

Slaughter drinks from flask, passes it on (like Jayne does with Simon in BDM)

“Let’s do this” outside the Irish bar (like Mal and Zoe in Train Job)

Bar fight (was I just seeing things? but it reminded me of the bar fight in the beginning of Shindig...they used a stool in both scenes)

Handkerchief/bloody nose (like in Trash)

Truck of medical supplies…out of gas (Ariel and Out of Gas)

"Go caveman on that partner" (Jayne didn't say this, but Slaughter's line is so characteristically Jayne-like that it had me laughing)

"Pack a little punch there for a writer" (of *course* he packs a punch...he's *Mal*!)

Pretending that he killed the guy in the Jamaican shop (Mal's joke that Kaylee's dead, in Serenity Pilot)

"That guy’s insane. He’s insane." said by Castle (turnabout's fair play, Mal) (Wash's line from War Stories; also Wash's "You are psychotic" from Serenity Pilot)

"Nothin’. Well obviously not nothin’. We’re talkin’…. (reminded me of Mal and Zoe dialog)

"You shoulda seen the look on your face (laughing)" (Mal in Serenity Pilot, dished back to Castle by Slaughter)

Guy in the garbage truck...Jayne in the airlock (Ariel)

"Make sure I could trust you. That you had my back" said by Slaughter. (Shades of Ariel, Mal unable to trust Jayne)

"But nothin’" (Castle) (Used in the same way Mal says it to Inara in Trash)

"Let’s do this!" (Castle) (Mal to Zoe and Jayne in Train job)

"I like to keep my options open" (Slaughter) (Jayne in BDM re: grenades)

"Whoa whoa whoa" (Castle) (exactly like Mal backed up to a cliff in Train Job)

I had about 5 others that I wasn't sure of, so I left them off the list.

Awesome.

Here's a question for the entomologists out there:

At the beginning, when Castle and his mother are arguing about hiding Alexis' college acceptance letters, there's a print of a winged insect in a frame that comes into view a couple of times. Is that a random bug, or..?

(...Or have I just watched Castle a lot and not noticed that?)
