I've given up on the local school. They have added two new classes to a schoolday where they don't have time to do anything but hand out worksheets anyway. They have no problem with it when a kid who has been an A student suddenly becomes a D student because she's 9 and doing hours of homework at night after a schoolday that would bore most sane people to tears.

They said they would "test" for for problems and when I asked them what would they do if she does have a problem, the answer was give her more time during class. Great, now she can do 4 freaking hours of mind numbing drivel at home to "catch up".

Not to mention the gym teacher that picks on her because she doesn't run fast (who doesn't EVER give an A, because kids LIKE feeling like they can't EVER win, right????) and the lunches that she has refused to eat just this year BECAUSE THEY TASTE LIKE CARDBOARD because a nosy, judgemental, black woman don't mind her own! Yeah, I said it. And yeah I've tried 'em. Whole wheat wraps and no condiments on anything!!! Nasty!

I'm SOOOOOO fed up.

I know several families that home school, a lot of my third cousins are homeschooled, two families with lots of kids in them. Plus other people. CTS homeschools her kids there in Peru.

In order for home schooling to work one has to make sure that the kid is still getting socialization time, a lot of it, because in my opinion that's the main part of school anyway. You might get together with some other families in your area who want to homeschool or who are already doing it and form a homeschool coop, where you school your kids together, different parents teach different subjects etc., I believe this is the good way to home school.

Something that has become popular in my area is online schooling, our local public school system has a school online program which, from what I hear, makes so the kid can go at their own pace more and move on their own schedule, plus they are together with other kids a couple of days a week so they still get social interaction with kids in their age group who are also online schooling.

Do you guys have any alternative schools or charter schools in your area? That might be a way to go so the school experience is still happening but in a venue which would suit her better?

There is nothing here. They even share principals, so it's the same stupidity no matter where ya go. And yes, I hear about online but I don't know ANYTHING else about them. You go to the websites and all you see is ten pages of them saying how great they are

My kid is dyspraxic, but the teachers here know next to nothing about it and are doing an amazing job at ignoring the problem all together, and ending the conversation as quickly as possible when I bring it up. I've been dealing with it on my own for four years. They have no problem mentally flogging a child that cannot physically do ANYTHING to fix the problem......

The thing is, she is extremely intelligent, but they treat her like a complete idiot. This isn't just her mama's bias here either.

She also is unlucky enough to have health problems as well and I am over- tired of explaining complicated things to simple people...

I now know why kids shoot people, for I'm pretty sure a big part of that is frustrations from dealing with the ignorant people supposed to be TEACHING them...

I feel ya, we might not get along, but I think you're starting to understand a bit more why I do what I do.
Have you looked into Sudbury type schools in your area ?

If that's not an option due to range, I'll see what resources I can pull down for you in regards to homeschooling, cause it sure sounds like the situation is out of hand to me.

I know there's Indiana k-12 and Connections Academy, but it took me years to figure this place out and I'm sure that worse, esp. since I don't know ANYONE who's actually done them or knows the first thing about them...

If you don't have any charter schools in your area and all the regular schools are linked, maybe hooking up with some other homeschool or online school families in your area and forming a home school co-op would be the thing for you guys. It doesn't sound like the current approach is helping anyone. I think its great that you're involved with your child's education and wanting her to succede, so often parents just sort of step aside and don't get involved.

Well, it's taken 3 days of calling people, having multiple conversations and debates, and finally forcing the issue, BUT THERE IS A LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL.
We think we have finally found someone to help her, yay! She's on a waiting list, but I guess it's better than nothin'....

Homeschooling is a lot of work but completely worth it! We homeschooled our daughters through grade school. It was great for them, and us. First, you need to make sure you will be complying with any state requirements for your location. There should be ample groups in your area that can guide you through it. Also, your state should have any requirements listed on their website, or your local school district site. It's not difficult. Also, you will be able to find their requirements for classes and what they expect as proof that your child is receiving an adequate education. This may be state tests or something else. There are a lot of good curricula for homeschooling out there. Good luck!

I really would love to, that has always been on the table since day one, but we are in a horrible position right now...

First we totalled a car so we decided to do some major scale home projects ourselves, and then I had pneumonia almost all of the summer- so not much got done, and then we had super high winds rip us a new one (but insurance only pays for half so now we have about nine irons in the fire and the weather is STILL not co-operating.) All that while juggleing all of our health problems and not having a real vacation in years... The only time I get a break is the little nap I catch while she's in school. Take that away and I think I'd go just bonkers...

Only plus is that our kid prolly knows more about construction than and other kid in the state

Oh no.

I was just re-doing her math homework AGAIN and I realized whenever there is more than a couple numbers in a math problem she gets the numbers jumbled.........

CRAP. OH CRAP.

I don't even know HOW to deal with THAT!

Pardon me, I need to go cuss. A LOT......

Hoping you hear back from that option you were looking into. If she's mixing things around and having a hard time in other similar ways it can be challenging, but there are ways out there to teach her so she'll catch up I'm sure, its finding them that's the challenge

That's tough, hopefully you'll hear back from the idea you've been looking at soon. There is a way out there to teach her and get her able to do these things, the hard thing is finding that way, but it _is out there.
