Just wondering which of Joss' projects you think is his best to date?

(I'm guessing as we're here on the Firefly forum it'll most likely be Firefly, but all the same I'd like to read what most people think.)

:D

For me it's Buffy The Vampire Slayer (TV). It was just so refreshing to have a young female heroine, lead a TV show.

and you....?

I far more identify w/ Firefly than say Buffy , Angel or Dr Horrible.

After Firefly, I'd have to go w/ The Avengers... no doubt.

For me its Firefly hard core. I haven't really been impressed with his other work. I did like having my friends tell me about Dollhouse, because in their blank state the charactors were touched, but I couldn't handle watching it myself because of the disgusting ethical fopas going on, I couldn't watch them make someone touched and sweet, then turn them into a prostitute, and then make them touched again. I watched it a couple of times and couldn't handle the emotional rollercoaster, because it hurt me that people would repeatedly do that to people and I had to watch it happen every time. So I couldn't watch it.

I think Buffy and Angel sound dull/uninteresting to me, Avengers was okay. I hated Dr. Horrible. Just my opinions. Everyone likes different things in TV.

Firefly of course.

Everything else is tied for a close second place, though.

eta: Oh, wait. I forgot about Dollhouse. I just really couldn't get into to it. So I guess that gets third place.

I was like that too, for the longest time. I figured it was more of a 'chick' show, as it revolved around a pretty cheerleader, in HS, and her Romeo / Juliet , forbidden love w/ Angel. Snore ! But then, I started watching the spin off Angel some, as it was still on after Firefly was cancelled, and I was like " Wow ! This has some kick ass stuff in it ! " , and that inevitably led me to going back and watching Buffy all over, from start to finish.

YOU may still find it boring, but for me, it was a nice change of pace from what else was on. And compared to the tripe of Edward and Bella ... Buffy and Angel are laughably so much more entertaining!

My favorites are Firefly, Toy Story, The Avengers, Titan A.E., and Cabin in the Woods.

Serenity is six on my list because it gives me cold chills. Not during the movie, but afterward as a puzzle: How to keep the Firefly story going without ignoring the Serenity story. I'm fairly sure it is an unsolved puzzle for Joss, too, which is why he has written no story set after Serenity. Not even a comic. Well, Zack Whedon wrote one for Free Comic Book Day 2012, but it amounted to nothin'.

Very few things can get me to cry but by the ending I could feel the tears behind my eyes. It managed to be funny and sad at the same time and the result was delightful. The casting was fantastic (though I didn't particularly care for having to hate a character of Nathan's) and the songs were equally wonderful. Definitely a 'Bravo, Joss' moment.

Hey Big 'D'
I've noticed I have started suggesting Dr Horrible if I'm advising people on which Joss project to jump in with first. It feels that much more accessible whilst still allowing Joss' brilliance to shine.

It's a real gem. No doubt.

Yeah Dollhouse is an interesting one and it does fall into the forgotten about category. It almost was great, but feels ill-conceived. Almost as though the ideas became to big for Joss and co to harness...? Who knows. Pity though because there were some great ideas in there.

Cabin in the Woods was on my list because it punched writers of crappy horror movies in the face. It might even discourage audiences from going to that kind of movie, which would be a public service. Inventing the 'secret' mythology behind horror movies, Joss attacked other writers for their shoddy methods of constructing a story.

I like the darker tone of Angel. His search for redemption (while still acknowledging that he doesn't deserve it) is very compelling. I also think they did a better job of developing the secondary characters of Cordelia and Wesley than ever happened on Buffy. Plus...Fred! Amy Acker is brilliant.

I know I'll get some arguments on this, but the Angel series finale was the perfect ending. Since he was fighting for redemption, plus fighting against insurmountable odds, it makes sense that the fight would never be over. Leaving it hanging like that was genius.

I still love Buffy too, but it went on longer than it should. While I like parts of Seasons Six and Seven, it suffered through Four and would have been better if they had tightened up the narrative, eliminated The Initiative and Adam, the weakest Big Bad, and condensed several other elements.

Fair enough EC.

I can see that, and really there was a quality with Angel that remand perhaps more consistent than Buffy, so it's understandable.

I thought Buffy when it hit it's highs was maybe of a higher level than when Angel did the same, but it's marginal for sure. I do think Angel introduced some very profound notions, that I really did like.

I wasn't a fan of how it ended, but I wouldn't argue against it necessarily, it was just not the approach I would have favoured, but it didn't render Angel any less complete.

Amy was certainly a bright spot. I even loved how they worked Harmony back into the story... and , of course, Spike.

But yeah, the series finale, I truly enjoyed. Hated how somethings went, of course, but they were done in classic Joss and company style. Very powerful.

Agreed. Basically, if you got 7 seasons, w/the sorts of situations the Scoobies faced, you're gonna have a few thin spots. They took a real risk w/ Dawn, of course, but over all, I'm glad I took the time to watch the whole series, start to finish.

Yes, but then I felt it then went on to have it's cake and eat it. Granted it was always with a knowing wink and tongue firmly in it's cheek, but that also wound me up, much like the Scream series of films did.

I was actually hopping for a more serious approach to the genre, rather than just poking fun at it, which is a little bit like hitting a bullseye the size of a buick!

Still I didn't dislike it. I think my expectations were off.

Select to view spoiler:

loved the two guys in the viewing headquarters. That was ace and those two were wonderfully subversive... I almost wish the film had been from their viewpoint looking on through-out, and then the dread would set in as the 'teens/victims' worked their way towards discovering them.

But it's by no means a bad flick.

Hands down - Firefly, top of the heap.
I'm one of the folk who really didn't care for Serenity, as it takes the story in a direction which no longer interested me, and discarded a lot of the better storytelling options by tying them off.

Runner up is absolutely The Avengers, I was impressed and that ain't easy, especially with typical overhyped hollywood drivel these days, not only did I leave my hermitage to go see it (SOOO worth it.) I paid freakin retail for the DVD, which sits on the place-of-honor shelf.

The rest of it, meh.

Buffy

Movies:

Serenity
Avengers

Dr. Horrible is a unique case, but it is among my fav Joss projects. Both the characters and the music are awesome.

Hey Frem,

I didn't picture you liking the Avengers. Don't know why exactly, but Joss did manage to tone down the Hollywood influence somewhat. He did a great job with injecting humor (which often times is lacking in these Marvel movies) but keeping the Marvel superhero mythology alive (and even adding to it).

I'm hoping that the greatness of the movie and the box office success will translate into some heavy duty Hollywood juice for Joss.

Actually, neither did I! - was prepared to be disappointed in fact.

What mostly got me was the characters/actors were so effectively done - Iron Man being something of a showboating jerk, but still somehow you wanna like him, Thor as his obnoxiously boneheaded and tempermental but basically decent self, and Banner as the tortured soul he really is, Joss pulled it all together and squeezed magic out of it somehow.

Props for the CGI work too, in comparison to say.. Iron Man 2, which I did not care for, and got shoved into watching on Netflix by a friend - the Black Widow Fight scenes were such awful CGI it was downright cringeworthy, and the only interesting part of THAT mess was the guy playing Hammer, creepy-dorky-awesome-psycho, he was terribly entertaining.

I don't actually like this variation on Nick Fury though, but it's tolerable, Jackson brings a subtler arrogance than usual, and Hill/Coulson are good foils.

But what REALLY drives a hero movie, is the VILLAIN, and Loki came through like gangbusters, well, right up to that ONE point, meh heh heh.

My favorite is Firefly, of course. That's the one that really grabbed me, and even got me writing fanfiction and joining a fansite, something I wouldn't have ever imagined myself doing for any TV show.

After that it's Dr. Horrible. I like the wit, and it was an absolute riot seeing Nathan play an arrogant, smarmy jerk. Between the roles of Mal, Captain Hammer, and Caleb, it's easy to see that he has a broad range of acting talent, and that was part of the fun.

Next would be Buffy. I love the premise, because it just takes the whole little-innocent-girl-gets-terrorized-by-the-bad-guy trope and dumps it on its head. I love that Buffy is a petite blonde with a silly name who absolutely clobbers the baddies. But the truth is I don't enjoy stories with a big paranormal fantasy element, and I found the vampires and werewolves tedious.

Toy Story is next. The others farther down the list. I haven't seen Much Ado about Nothing, but I hope I get the chance sometime soon.

That's funny, as they didn't actually use CG in her fights in Iron Man 2 - that was stunt work. BUT, some of her action stuff in Avengers was done in CG...

I obviously love Firefly - but I also love Boffy/Angel, and consider them to be a couple of the greastest TV shows ever produced. Comparing them to Firefly, which I consider more of a miniseries, seems almost Apples/Oranges.

For anyone who has not seen Buffy or Angel, you might find it interesting that I didn't watch them either until after falling in love with Firefly. There was so much talk about the earlier shows here and on other sites that I thought it couldn't hurt to check them out even though I had originally thought they weren't for me. Firefly is still tops, but considering that Joss worked with a lot of the same writers and directors that also worked on Firefly, it was interesting to go back and see them at an earlier stage perfecting their craft.

Buffy Season One is weak, but it starts off well and ends on a high note, and Seasons Two and Three were terrific. You should at least watch those three, then muddle through Four to get to Five, which is almost up to the level of Three. Angel started at the same time as Buffy's Season Four, and I actually like it a bit more, but both are well worth your time, in my not so humble opinion.

Okay Frem, you've been hanging around River too much.....you just about read my mind with your comments re: Avengers.

Joss masterfully set up the characters well within the framework of the story, giving each little idiosyncrasies that he later paid off on (sounds familiar don't it?). Loki as villain - agreed. Hiddleston was awesome!

IronMan/Downey gave you just enough smaltz so as not to offend, along with Loki, he drove the movie. But yeah Joss pulled the best performances out of each actor...he's good at that. But you're right on all counts.

Was not impressed with Iron Man 2 (hope IM3 is better). AS far as Nick Fury, I'm not crazy about Samuel L. Jackson as Fury. I would have preferred George Clooney or Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Comedian in Watchmen). Jackson is passable as Fury, but I feel he delivers his lines a bit heavy-handed in the Avengers. Hill and Coulson (you can't see me but I'm smiling right now).

I'm telling you Frem, as each minute went by I was blissfully happy. My geeky/nerdy self was giggling like a schoolgirl (buried deep within a gruff exterior of course. Must keep up appearances you know....hee hee, snort!)
And one day, Joss will rule Hollywood.

Hey Sleepy,

You do make a good point about the "vignette" style of the storyline. My guess is that Joss, in trying to send up the genre, wanted to include as much, and as many, clichés he could get away with. Still though it was entertaining. My favorite was the Merman....lol.

Well, yeah - although as mention I am not overfond of a lot of Joss's other work, must admit though "Bad Beer" and Angel as a puppet were hi-larious.

With The Avengers, what really sold me was the little things, the attention to detail that's just... MISSING, from films these days.

Like Stark putting his busted up suit together to fly from the carrier to Stark tower, JUST so he didn't have to "fly coach" in the Quinjet...

Coulson trying to keep a straight face while Stark and Pepper play snark-volleyball, or treating the brutal fight on the other end of the phone like it's boring hold music.

Loki watching Cap and Thor go at it, oh so OBVIOUSLY wishing for a bag of popcorn.

Loki crawling TOWARDS THE BAR when the team catches back up with him, guess he really *did* need a drink.

ANYTHING Nastasha says/does that isn't plot-related, various snarky comments, aside glances, and while subtle, the fact that she is really, really, very seriously scared totally witless of The Hulk, even BEFORE that whole chase thing.

The NYPD actually giving a respectable though debateably effective account of themselves.

Peter Jackson and Del Toro are also quite good at this, mind - but Joss has a knack for it.

I've only seen Serenity, Dr. Horrible, Firefly, Dollhouse, and the Avengers (in chronological order).

As you can guess, I like Firefly/Serenity best, and I also like them about equally, although they have different focuses and go different (equally important) directions. I confess that Serenity isn't as good without the background Firefly gives - at the time I was very impressed by the movie and thought it was more a more realistic take on the rebellious themes of Star Wars, but the movie didn't give me an attachment to the characters like Firefly did. So I kinda forgot about the movie until I found Firefly.

Next is Dr. Horrible, which is the only other Joss-work I've done fanfic about. I really like the world-building, with the suggested separate superhero and supervillain social scenes, and how the rivalry between the two is kinda destructive for the regular people caught between them, and both heroism and villainy are almost in name only. Plus the songs are catchy! The only downside here, although I liked the last plot twist as a Start of Darkness thing, there's some questionable elements about it.

Dollhouse is actually third for me, even though the execution for Dollhouse needed some work. But it had interesting philosophical themes.

Avengers was fun, a good blockbuster, but it doesn't have the kind of messages I like from Joss' work.

Don't know about the rest in terms of ranking. Didn't like Avengers or Cabin in the Woods much. Buffy is one of the most brilliant and important pieces of film/tv ever for me... Angel and Firefly aren't far behind, but Serenity was a big one because of the anticipation for the film and how it fulfilled my expectations and so much more.

Wow Alex87. That's very close to how I feel about Joss' work. I did like Avengers though.

°...Well here I am.°
