Think I can actually sing the first verse and I know the chorus. Maybe a little more if I have a mind too.

A couple nights at work I've been humming The Gambler from Kenny Rogers. I've oft wondered if anybody thought it was about gambling or a gambler. Thought it was a bit tongue in cheek to do a TV movie with the same name and be about a gambler.

I'm uncertain if you are serious.
Perhaps I was biased because at the age i was when released in 1978 I thought everything was about love. And had learned that all Country songs were about love.

The Gambler is about the Game of Love, the Gamble of Love.
The first person is certainly not a gambler, and the Gambler is giving advice about love, albeit in cardplaying terms.
You've got to know when to cling to, and know when to let go, move on.
You've got to know when you can part amiably, and know when to run away from the crazy ones.
You never evaluate your love like money while in love, there'll be time enough for reflection when the loving is done.

Kenny's first person was not drowning his cardplaying sorrows in his bottle of whiskey. It was his love life sorrows, I always assumed. Maybe business, now that I think on it. These rules do also apply to business, investing.

Cardplaying is the metaphor, but I certainly never thought the song was about gambling or cardplaying. And yes, I was playing thousand of decks per year when the song came out.

In the movie, I think Kenny swapped places, taking the role of Gambler, and not dying.

I was about 14years old when that song came out and wasn't thinking about love just yet. Was still settling into a new school and grieving for my dad.

I did however like the tv movie. Just my opinion is all. Think I watched it to see what it would be about and because Bruce Boxlietner was in it.

Kenny was the Gambler and no his character didn't die.

Humming at work started off with, I think, That's The Way I Like It by (I think) KC & The Sunshine Band. Which morphed into the Theme from Magnum, PI. Seems like they have parts which are the same - the part That's the way, uh huh uh huh, I like it. Don't think I had noticed that before.
Then drifted to Alex F by Harold Faltermeyer, which also seemed to have similar passages.

Huh. I never noticed all of that. Interesting.

Right now I got sounds of people where I am living using all the hot ruttin' water.

I loved "Due South". Paul Gross was yummy and he can sing too. I have a CD by him and it is one of my favourites.

I only heard him sing on the show, IIRC with Leslie Nielsen.

What CD? What style of music? What year of release?

JSF,

It is a cross between country and a little bit of rock. It's called, Two Houses" and he did it with another musician David Keeley. It was released in 1997. He also did another one but I couldn't find it at the time.

ETA: If you look up "Ride Forever" on YouTube it will bring up a bunch of Paul Gross stuff like music. "Ride Forever" is a song off of "Two Houses." He and David Keeley sang once on a rainy Canada Day in Ottawa with a couple of minor lyric changes.
