So the creator and star of Veronica Mars are running a kickstarter to try to make a movie version of the show:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/559914737/the-veronica-mars-movie-
project

We're a few hours in and they've already picked up half a million bucks (actually, it's up to $577k now - it's increasing as I type). $2m is the bare minimum, I think they're realistically looking for around $4m.

Kickstarter does allow those who can and would pay larger amounts than a $10 ticket to fund movies - I wonder if this does well enough, Joss might consider running one for a Firefly revival. Okay, up to $585k now.

I'm sure plenty of people here would fork out a larger sum than we paid to go see Serenity plus all of it would be going to the production rather than the cinema chain. Granted, sci-fi is more expensive a setting than a high school but there's bound to be a few effects guys who would work for scale to be part of this plus the cast would hopefully love the chance to work together again. Right, now it's at $600k (I am typing quite fast too!)

I know Veronica Mars ran for longer but I think our fanbase is just as eager for more and just as loyal so let's see where this ends up and hope that Joss can find some time in his schedule between running one of the big new TV series of the year and writing/directing the Avengers sequel to make this happen. $610k. Blimey.

What? Miranda mostly used a high school for their set IIRC.

This is fairly interesting. I wonder how much this $2 million is intended to fund. I mean that can't possibly be the whole budget. Are they just testing the waters to see what kind of support is really out there?

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I just saw this on TV Guide before I came here. I made a donation and the total was already over $1.5 million. By the time I finished watching the five minute video the number of donors had increased by almost 150 and the total went over $1.6 mil.

They will reach the $2 million goal by the end of just this first day of the campaign. Anything over that allows them more options for locations and guest stars.

They just topped $2 million a few minutes ago, and it's still going up.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Kickstarter would certainly be a good route to go for a Serenity sequel, but I believe it has been brought up in one form or another before and nothing came of it. I believe w/ Joss's new obligations to Marvel / Disney / ABC and most of the cast having moved on to new contracts the issue at this point would be getting everyone back together.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; I would gladly donate to any fund that would hope to launch a revival of the series, a sequel to the movie, or even a Joss helmed spin off of Firefly. I want more tales from the 'Verse!

Sadly I think Firefly/Serenity have a number of issues that would stand in the way of a similar campaign. First and foremost is the difference in budget. Wasn't Serenity around $45 million or something like that? If $2 million was the biggest film campaign in kickstarter history we'd need to completely smash the record books. Then there's still no telling if that will account for inflation, the rise in actors' average pay as their popularity has risen, etc. Then there's finding a schedule that will work for Joss and all the actors. Finally there's getting Fox on board.

We'll have to wait and see if this kicks off a whole new trend in movie funding. If that happens then maybe there's hope somewhere down the line.

The VM Kickstarter was just a gauge to see how much fan interest there is in a movie. Kristen Bell, Rob Thomas and the other principal parties are foregoing their normal salary for gross points on the profits. Warner Bros. is producing and distributing, and I am sure the funds raised in this campaign will mainly be used to pay for all the incentives.

I won't say how much I contributed, but if it had been for Firefly I would have upped the donation at least ten times.

Yes, but a fairly small piece of the movie was set there.

Im guessing that the above the line people (cast and top-end crew, like Director) will work on deferment - they get nothing until the film makes money. And was said in the pitch, if all they raise is $2 million, the movie will be set in one room - and the more they get, the more it opens things up. So, the budget is likely to pay the crew and location fees.

This bit of news was on the Today show, and I thought the same as you and others - Why not Firefly!?

Everyone, you're right, this is a barometer for fan interest. The studios want to know if they build it, will they come. Exciting bit of news indeed.
Now, with Joss's juice at the present moment it would generate quite a bit of buzz, which would translate into either a miniseries or BDM2.

Joss are you seeing this!?

I seriously believe "we" would smash the current VM record-setting amount, which would definitely catch the eye of Hollywood (including Fox) and because of Joss's success.

I think it would be better served as a TV mini-series (6-12 hours) because of the cast other commitments, plus Joss can do wonders with a limited budget and I think he must have most of the stories written by now (tweaking may be involved). I think that he would probably direct the opening set of the mini-series, then oversee the remainder, or, he would direct BDM2, Serenity the Sequel (or Prequel with Wash - like when he and Zoe met how they defied Mal to get married) Okay I just got goosebumps!

Joss has a talented group of people who would drop everything to continue the saga. With all the new fans that the show has generated I could see it happening, Joss just has to give the word, the logistics can be worked out
(especially if Hollywood smells ca$hy money).

Straight from the Joss's mouth:
Quote:

My fourth feeling when I read about [the Veronica Mars Kickstarter campaign] was a kind of dread. Because I realized the only thing that would be on everybody's mind right now. I've said repeatedly that I would love to make another movie with these guys, and that remains the case. It also remains the case that I'm booked up by Marvel for the next three years, and that I haven't even been able to get Dr. Horrible 2 off the ground because of that. So I don't even entertain the notion of entertaining the notion of doing this, and won't. Couple years from now, when Nathan [Fillion]'s no longer [on] Castle and I'm no longer the Tom Hagen of the Marvel Universe and making a giant movie, we might look and see where the market is then. But right now, it's a complete non-Kickstarter for me.

When stuff like this fills the man with dread I think that's a big warning sign to back off. I kinda feel sorry for the guy that there are so many bloodthirsty fans hounding him about this stuff for over a decade now. When he says he flat out won't do it for three years I think we should give him some peace and quiet for three years.
