I've closed the poles and tallied the votes from the Vote Wash Dead or Alive thread.

The official tally being:

Dead- 18

Alive-14

with one abstaining (me, since I was taking the votes) one vote for yes, yes, yes! which could be a vote for anything?? (I'll have what he's having :p!) and one vote for a Zombie Wash...

I'm actually surprised that the race was that close. Be nice if we could have this vote on a bigger scale, but I get a feeling that as dedicated as the "Save Wash" people ARE, that this would represent the microcosm fairly closely. I think natural tendency is that once people die, they stay that way...

P.S. I really like Gallowalker's idea about Ghost Wash flying with River, it's sweet....

Can we start bickering now?

I'm firmly on the "leave him dead" side, but I also like the "ghost" idea too. It can even be explained by "residual psychic energy" or something like that.

But it limits Wash to talking only to River.

When Wash died, Mal was on the bridge, yet never saw until too late the big ugly Reaver warship land and fire cannon at Wash. Hit him right in his heart on the very first shot! Unexpected perfection from Reavers.

It is not far fetched to imagine River warning Mal to look out the forward windows. Once he sees danger, he'll know what to do about Wash.

After Joss makes another good & complicated story about how River knew Mal needed a warning to save Wash, we will accept Wash still being alive -- even people who voted that Wash stay dead for the continued artistic integrity of the story -- a story that hasn't moved forward since Serenity 2005 except for twelve pages on Free Comic Book Day 2012. At least River got a pony in that comic.

I'm in the "save Wash" crowd, but River was strapped in the dining lounge area with the rest of the crew and passengers. Now, we know River is a Reader, but there's been no evidence she can project thoughts. She's not Willow.

The poll doesn't really shed light on whether Wash should be alive or dead in a story continuation, so much as it sheds a light on the state of Browncoat fandom and the likelihood for a continuation. I mean really, a topic of debate about which folks tend to feel pretty strongly, and the total response is 34 people?

Everybody jumped on the Netflix guy for saying Firefly Fandom is dead.
I think he is right in that tight context, but where he was wrong is that the reason Firefly fandom is dead is lack of new content. And lack of new content is also why interest in discussion or polls about long ago topics feels like beating a dead horse. New content, properly presented, would absolutely reinvigorate interest in, and discussion about, the 'verse.

My view is that if Firefly were to be given the chance to continue, and to prove the Netfix guy wrong in re-energizing the Firefly fanbase, the continuation should draw on the uplifting virtues that made the show the success it is. My opinion is that trying to relaunch the series from the "dead Wash" jumping off point makes that a tough sell to the percentage of hardcore "Wash Lives" Browncoats like myself, AND makes too dark a starting point for attracting new fans to the 'verse. I'm sure the "dead Wash" folks would disagree with me, and that is certainly their right. But even tho' there is a trend toward darker-edgier entertainment in Hollywood currently, that is no guarantee for success. My observation is that sustainable franchises that are uplifting and leave people feeling hopeful are the longest lasting and most influential. My belief is that Firefly can tell interesting and engaging stories while fitting that mold and that "live Wash" is the better jumping off point to a successful, continuing Firefly. A 34 respondent poll doesn't shake either my understanding or my preference, any more than it should serve as an affirmation for the "dead Wash" folks.

I was thinking of something less psychic: that Joss would put a mike next to River's seat. She could just talk to Mal on the intercom. "Look out the window! What do you see? Are there Reavers?"

How Mal forgot Serenity was being closely followed by Reavers, I'll never understand. It really should not take a psychic to save Wash.

I am aware that is changing the past, but if Joss has a clever setup that is not a time machine, people will accept it and the show can go on [as a comic], instead of lingering in a coma. Buffy and Angel have been going strong for years as comics. Why not Firefly?

That's too easy for comics and they are the natural home for future Firefly stories.

There is a relevant comic book example from 2013 -- Age of Ultron –- with characters that Joss Whedon is working with in movies and TV: Tony Stark, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, S.H.I.E.L.D.

To make a long story short, the wrong guy (equivalent to Wash) is killed by Avengers to save New York City in Age of Ultron. But the city is still destroyed. Oops! So Joss's favorite comic book heroes undo that killing and find a different way to save the city. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_Ultron

Joss needs to do with Firefly what was done with Age of Ultron. He has to write his way out of a problem. He killed Wash, a bad idea, and now he need find an entertaining way to bring Wash back. That is how comics are done. Firefly is coming back as a comic or it's not coming back at all.

Than I hope it is not coming back at all. That this point it is the fans, anything offical will take away from some of the fans visions of what happens with the crew. Just let each fan decide.

You're right about bad Firefly comics. And cartoons are expensive to create. I think Firefly has to look real, which makes a cartoon really expensive. Firefly can't look like Futurama or Clone Wars.

Joss Whedon works for Marvel. Marvel's successful formula for making movies is to create many cheap-to-produce comic book series and then take the most popular and go to Hollywood with them. Avengers comic becomes Avengers movie.

Joss must have a secret plan to publish a successful Firefly comic series at Marvel, then make the Firefly movie! That would be a very personal triumph for him.

To test run a story with comics, you can create believability inexpensively. But comics can be too cheap. For example, see the final page of the most recent Firefly comic:

(It's Russian. You don't want to know what Zoe & Mal said. If Joss had written it, it would be better. But Zack Whedon wrote it, proving nepotism is wrong. )

Why not an animated series, or series of animated movies? The cast could
do the voice work, their ages could be ignored, special effects could be amazing.

I didn't think the comics sucked, but was disappointed in them.

For me, much of the appeal of the show was the chemistry of the cast. Not exactly something a comic or even a cartoon can properly capture.

I won't complain if the story only continues in a form other than live action, but I would prefer otherwise.

Of course it is a matter of opinion. You know what they say about opinions right?

At this point many fans have vastly different ideas they like. Some like Jayne/River pairings, others not so much. Some like the idea that River is closer to normal after the movie. Some others hate the idea of a cured River.

Perahps this is the biggest reason not to add anything offical. No matter what is added at this point a good chunk of people are not going to be happy.

They're as silly as stopping in the middle of a novel they like because later chapters might not be quite as good as what has already been read. I mention novels because Firefly was novel TV that changed with each chapter until, I hope, a well planned ending. Routine TV is like Castle with one murder after another until that interminable show dies itself. It's not that later episodes aren't as good as early episodes. It's the sameness. It is Murder, She Wrote. And that lasted 12 seasons.
