what kind of universe would it have been? did the independents want each planet to govern themselves? were they trying to put their own government in place?

i would love to hear other people's thoughts on this!

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

There wasn't enough information given in the series about why the Independents were fighting, but it is logical to assume they wanted self-determination, each planet, or each government on the planets, deciding their own fate.

I'm not much of a writer, but I think that would be a good challenge for some of the fanfic writers here. Just as alternate history is a very big sub-genre within SF/Fantasy, how about some alternate 'verse stories of what would have happened to Mal and the others if the Independents had been successful. Would he have returned to Shadow to work the ranch, or would he have still yearned to go into space?

It would probably make a good film, to go with Serenity - hearing this hint Joss ?

You know, smaller numbers for Indeps, larger force (Alliance) - all the fun of the fair.

It would be a 'verse in which the hegemony of Blue Sun would be completely unopposed. Corrupt and naive hick administrations would be no match for the corporate mandarins.

So, you're saying it wouldn't be different at all? Seems that Blue Sun is pretty powerful in the 'verse in which the Alliance won.

My take is that Blue Sun has opposition within the Alliance, whose representives in Serenity are Book [as a moral archetype] and Inara [as a political archetype]. Blue Sun will be destroyed by the legal system of the Alliance when River can be brought to testify to it.
