Solar System or Universe?

I looked around because I'm sure someone said this had been discussed at length, but couldn't find the thread. If someone wants to post a link, that would be fine.

Barring that, what is up with this debate? It seems kind of crazy to me for people to think that so many terraformed worlds could exist in one solar system. Methinks they call it the "'verse" for a reason. Heck in out of gas aren't they caught out in deep space?

So, go ahead, prove me wrong. I could have completely missed it.

You don’t have to leave the solar system to find deep space. We got lots of it.

So true, the distances just to "close" planets like Mars are tens of millions of miles - of course, that becomes hundreds of millions when they're at the farthest reach of their orbits from us. Also, while our solar system has "only" nine planets, it also has many more potentially habitable moons around Jupiter and Saturn. There's every reason to believe that other individual solar systems could have even more habitable bodies to colonize.

Of course, we don't know the answer for sure, but there's nothing that happened during the series that would absolutely require the use/habitation of more than one solar system. So, until we find out otherwise, I'm voting for just one solar system.

Was there ever a catalog of canon mentions in the series to support either notion? I read somewhere about a quote of "70+ earths". You aren't going to tell me you can cram 70+ earths in the habitable temperature zone around a sun, are you?

Now that the little 'uns are thoroughly addicted, I get to watch eps even more often than before!

Lots of mention of the 'Verse, and lots of the galaxy (in several different episodes).

I'm now of the impression that much of the galaxy is settled, but not more than one *galaxy*. Several systems.

When you're dealing with terraforming the habitable temperature zone really doesn't matter that much.

Why not? What if the sun is a red giant? It could have a MUCH larger habitable zone than our current sun, plus, like I said more habitable bodies (ie. moons) than just planets...

It isn't a single system, or the whole universe. In a deleted scene from Our Mrs Reynolds, Mal says (wording may not be exact) "There's over 70 Earths in the galaxy, and the meek haven't inherited a single one."
I think they're spread out over the galaxy, maybe only five planetary systems at most.

DRACOS

My personal theory is that after Earth was abandoned the survivors mad a long haul out into a fairly newly broken up Nebula where you could have lots of new suns that have been around long enough to fully form and gather up planetoids. Since newly formed they wouldnt have been subjected to the same kind of celestial drift that pulls most suns in the galaxy apart yet. The survivors then terraformed the most likely planet they came across and branched out from there. This could explain why there are so many desert planets (Terraforming wont solve heat coming at a planet from a ot of different angles) and those really cool ripped apart CG moons that Zoic loves to do (due to comflicting gravitational forces from close proximity suns).

This solves a couple of problems with both the multiple system theory and single system theory. In the single system concept, even with terraforming, the core-worlds would be the most desolate which, as we see in Ariel and Safe, is not the case. Also the outer planets would be far more temperate and Earth-like and going out to the border-worlds where everything would be frozen (not the case a-la Whitefall).

As far as the multiple system theory goes, We've never seen anything that indicates faster than light travel which would (barring the advent of another technology) be required to move between planets in a number of days. With Serenity's fuel requirements, the disipated nebula idea makes considerable more sense as the process of "rabbiting" or doing a hard burn through what looks like to me to be a short term ion blast useing some kind of fusion reaction to give a great burst of speed that would be transfered into momentum (no friction in space) that would propel the ship through the distances between systems.

There it is. Know its not perfect but it makes a lot more sense to me than a lot of other ideas that I've heard over time. Just dont get why people get so worked up over it.

Single system? Hell it's a single planet. In fact, most of those locations seem to have been from the same area - with a climate suspiciously similar to southern California. I think we've been duped people.
