This model took Jay Thurman most of the summer to complete.
Jay Thurman wrote, "Here is my 100% made in SketchUp model of Serenity - where organic modeling is more than just tricky, it'd damn near impossible without plugins, and even with those, it's still difficult."

Hi, This is Jay, the guy who made the SketchUp Firefly. Thanks for promoting her here - I had an account here a few years ago, but forgot about it, and since found this forum discussion via Google. Anyway, I've made a minor fix of model since I posted the pictures on DeviantArt. I rounded the paneling around the forward lounge windows a little closer to the real model (called v 1.1) and I've also uploaded my model of the hover mule which I was working on in tandem with the ship. The mule is really detailed, lets just say my old slow computer can't handle displaying both the ship and mule at the same time.

Someone asked me to model the cargo bay of Serenity - if I have time I might try it, or maybe someone else can and fit it in.

See you browncoats later.

Jay

The SFX were made by Zoic Studios. On their website they are looking for computer people with experience with Maya so I'm assuming that's what they mainly use.

Thanks.

Its interesting how all this stuff is taking so long to develope. Watch the making-of extraz for moviez like Tron and The Last Star Fighter. They had to make their own software from twigz & root sap! Then later in the 80z Jamez Cameron had to flog programmerz round the clock to make the water tentacle in The Abyss.

I recall the engineerz at sum uv the placez I worked back then spending way more time putzing around with Autocad than on actual engineering. Altho the capabilityz uv the software haz increased alot, the amount uv work it takes to learn how to uze it and to make it do sumthing iz still rediculous.

It seemz to me the developerz arent very good.

Have you seen Blender? From what I've seen, it looks like it can do anything Maya and 3dStudio can do, if not more, and it's 100% free!

www.blender.org

It even have an amazing renderer built in. I've been messing around with it but it's a "box modeler" meaning you start with a simple cube and by pushing, pulling, morphing, sculpting and applying a butt-load of modifiers you eventually sculpt your final product which all started with a simple box. It requires a different way of thinking about 3d modeling than drawing a bunch of lines into shapes like in SketchUp.
