I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't say that, myself. So far, Ive been most impressed by Sleepy Hollow (which I expected to be terrible).

I think SHIELD has potential, but it's not there, yet.

Though, on a personal note, I did really get a kick out of the big finale in Union Station, having just been there a few weeks back - right before I saw Joss the last time!

Uhmahgawd, hubs likes that one too. I thought it was "ridiculous plots thrown in a blender" time. Blegh.

I will agree with SHIELD having potential. We all know Joss likes to get a running start and then layer in the subtle-ties all stealthy like. And I think the jerk characters you like to hate will be coming later too...

S.H.E.I.L.D. had the strongest pilot I have seen in a long time. I like Sleepy Hollow too. But I think Sleepy Hollow is going to have to work harder than AoS to keep the audience.

Agreed. It was kind of light compared to Avengers, but quirky- so full of possibilities. A very solid foundation for a superstructure, as it were.

I wonder if Joss's experience w/ former pilots not being received as well helped him with this one.

Of course, having direct ties w/ the Avengers movie only helps,( familiar story line, characters ) where as with Firefly, the audience was clueless, and the show began from a standing start.

Of course I liked it. That was going to be a given. But I'm glad it delivered , too.

I agree that it was a pretty strong pilot, but like Auraptor said, having ties to the movies certainly helps.

I think that it wasn't great, but it was no where near bad either.
It certainly has potential and I'm confidant that Joss and company won't let us down.

Agent Coulson is probably safe. And I hope to high heaven Ron sticks around for the long haul.

Don't know who'll be first, but Joss seems to kill of women and men equally. The 'cute, innocent' tend to get it worse, though, so MY bet is on Simmons. ( With no trips to Tahiti, either. ) Who ever dies, will stay dead.

I'm giving Sleepy Hallow a chance. ( since I don't see a thread for that show yet )

The guy doing Ichabod Crane does a fine job, but am I the only one who thinks Aidan Turner ( Being Human - BBC ) would have been a good fit as well ?

I guess, going on both their imdb work history, the guy they got probably is a better actor, but still...

And maybe it's just me again, but already in 2 episodes, Sleepy Hallow is starting to remind me a lot of Buffy's Sunnydale.

I'll probably watch another episode but if the audio quality doesn't improve I won't see the third. I watch on Hulu, which may be the problem, but even though I watched the pilot twice, I still missed a lot of the dialog.

So, just another action/adventure show with the adventure being what did they say, who are these people and what are they trying to do?

Nice seeing Ron Glass again though.

I'm thinking the problem was Hulu. I don't usually have too much trouble with Hulu, but when watching the Pilot, about a third the way thru, I had to refresh everything. Although my sound was ok, the video was studdering and skipping frames just to keep up.

I started watching on HULU and the video froze. I went straight to ABC's site and watched it there with no problem.

It was ok IMO. Nothing special about it. The actress who plays Skye worries me. She couldn't pull off Whedon dialog IMO. Her delivery was too heavy handed. Whedon whit should be somewhat subtle and it should always seem like something the person would naturally say instead of a punch line.

Simmons is cute and I wanted to like her characters a la Fred on Angel, but I had trouble understanding her half the time. Her accent and quick rate of speaking left me in the dust way too often.

Joss definitely knew what he was doing bringing in Coulson. He anchored the show big time. He nailed his lines and kept the whole thing interesting. I put him or the veteran female agent (I forget her name) as the first to die. They both seem to have something in their past that they have to come to terms with. Once that happens they're in deep trouble.

I dunno. I'm kind of bummed to admit it, but I'm liking Sleepy Hollow a good deal more than AoS. The acting is first rate. The writing is clever without being 'cute'. And, most importantly, they're creating characters I can really care about, with interesting conflicts and motivations.

It took me a couple of episodes to swallow the fantastical premise, but for my money they're doing Buffy/Whedon better than Joss - at least for now.

Right there with you. Sleepy Hollow, which as I noted above, I expected to be really lame, has hooked me completely.

SHIELD, which I wanted to like for a variety of reasons (supporting Joss, the return of Mutant Enemy, being a fan of the MCU, and I flippin was a SHIELD agent, if even for just one night) - and while Ive enjoyed it well enough - if it weren't for the Joss/Mutant Enemy connection, I think I would have bailed.

Its just so.... bland. It doesn't help that Joss' shows have always worked best when they're the underdogs - having a team with unlimited resources and the full backing of a huge shadow agency strips it of that entirely. Coulson and to a lesser degree Mae are still the only characters I care about - Im actively hoping for the deaths of most of the others, who I find flat and'or outright annoying (Fitz and Simmons either need to get better or go away - just casting what is essentially the same character with one of each gender strikes me as pandering, not clever).

I did find the last episode to be a bit of an improvement - especially for the Ward character (the fact that he only became interesting when pretending to be someone else doesn't instill me with a great deal of confidence in this area, though). But Im hoping the uptick in quality continues.

But boy... a couple months back, there was a blind item on Defamer claiming that the first several episodes of SHIELD had terrible scripts that ABC was unhappy with, and that Joss had to swoop in to "salvage" just before shooting. I balked at the idea at the time.... now, Im kinda buying it.

Because his other shows were so racially diverse?

He created a universe where China had as much cultural influence as any other country - and had, what - one Asian extra in the whole series (and movie)?

Its one of the biggest failings in his work, IMO.

Even aside from the crew, it always struck me as daft that they couldn't work in some Asians as any other characters. The entire 'verse was pretty lily white.

Im not saying they NEVER had minorities - but be honest, a lot of those characters appeared briefly (when you've got to resort to "Asian Lawyer" to say that Angel was diverse, you've shot your argument in the foot), and the list of white characters is a whole lot longer. Or re-write your list to be non-white characters that lasted more than one appearance, and its a pretty paltry list.

Im not laying it all at Joss' feet - to be clear. A lot of it is studio politics, but that doesn't mean the disparity isn't there.

And that said, having been unimpressed with the series at the start, I think it IS really improving as it goes.

I know this comparison comes out of no where for the most part, but I just watched an episode of Once Upon a Time last night where they introduced Tinker Bell. At the end of the episode for some reason it made me think of the failings of Agents of SHIELD. I mean in one episode they introduced a brand new character and I care more about her character than I do any of the characters in SHIELD except maybe Coulson. SHIELD is improving but they really need to do some episodes that focus on these characters back story. I'm sure the writers have thought stuff up. It's past time to tell the audience.

I think they could really do well stealing the "flashback" tactic used so well by Lost and Once Upon a Time. Rather than coincidentally having the team go on a mission that super coincidentally has a great deal to do with one of the team's past. It's much less jarring to just have the mission bring up parallels to something from one of their pasts and just show brief flashback scenes throughout the episode to give insight into what influences the character.

Interesting point, but really, Tinkerbell isn't a brand new character - sure, she's new to that show, but its a character you're at least somewhat familiar with, so there's groundwork already laid.

I agree they need to do a bit more of the "Case of the week ties to character's backstory" (having done this a bit already with Coulson's former protege) - but it can be over-used, too. That particular storytelling angle pretty much ruined Human Target in it's second year - because they made EVERY episode in that mold.
